My tundra is less than 2 years old. About 8 months ago I was hit on the side by another driver and my truck was in the shop for a month. When I got it back the battery was dead. I know it’s not good to run a battery down but when I had my car at the dealer afterward they said my battery was fine.

Today I was in the driveway installing new speakers and had the music on for 30-45 minutes. Went to start it and the battery was dead again.

Is it normal for a battery to die just for listening to the radio for 45 minutes or do you think I really do have a bad battery? I know if I keep on running it down it WILL eventually go bad. I have a feeling if it is bad Toyota will probably balk at giving me a new one.

    What do you all think?

I was kind of thinking that too. I may have to fight them on it but I’m going to try. Thanks for the input.

They may pro rate a battery so might be better off just buying one yourself. If you have an amp it will kill a battery a lot quicker. If no amp a 1/2 hour is no bueno.

So are you saying with no amp you can still kill a battery in 30 minutes just listening to the radio?

You might be right. If I do buy one, didn’t I see a thread one time about a better battery for the tundra? Seems like it was red but I don’t remember the name of it.

The battery is probably going bad when your truck went to the shop. They probably had doors left open without thinking about turning of the interior lights and cargo lights to save your battery. Chances are it may have died while in shop due to that.

There has been several battery replacements on here in the 2 year range, a few even less time. The factory one isn't always Primo...

OP has two years in, likely battery is 3 years old. I've seen parts of Tennessee hit triple digits in the summer. Buy an AGM and be done worrying about it. Some mechanic or install tech leaves the door open for an hour, no big deal. I have a Northstar 27F arriving Friday and my battery is still miraculously ok after 4 years. 4 years for flooded is pretty good. Might get 5 but it's not worth the risk/savings. You'll have a monster reserve too. Listen to your radio till you get bored.

Check with you local Advance, O'Reilly, etc to see if they can test it for you. You'll have a quick answer to your question before heading to the dealer and raising hell.

Is the battery really bad, or was it just hanging out with the wrong crowd?

I am saying if the radio kills the battery in 1/2 with no amp then that is not good. A good battery should easily power an ampless radio for a 1/2 hour. Although because of the lack of an ACC key position in newer vehicles a radio will kill a battery quicker than the old days. Plus the radio itself probably takes more juice with the screens they now have.

I have the same problem. My truck sits in a parking lot for 3 or 4 days before I drive it again. I have a battery tender at home but no place to plug in in the parking lot. Probably not helping my battery life.

I am assuming the Northstar fits in the standard rack? I don’t really want to do modifications to accommodate it. It looks bigger in the picture.

Yea that sucks- just a thought but you could by an inverter that plugs into truck interior to power battery tender then somehow run secondary leads under hood to charge your battery while sitting- kind of funny I guess- inverter would be draining battery at the same time it would be charging
    :annoyed:
    JM2C- good luck bud

I've fit a group 31 in, but you'll need longer J-hooks for the hold down, and you'll need to extend the positive cables...and possibly the negative depending on what terminals you use with it. It's a little bigger than a group 27.

Although I've not done it in the Tundra yet, I did have a 2012 Highlander that would go dead listening to the radio for about 15 minutes. At least dead enough not to start. Our Scion is about the same. And they had brand new batteries.

I seriously considered it as I pride myself as an "overkill build" guy. The numbers are so high compared to stock I couldn't rationalize it however. Nothing outside a wireless charger and inefficient stock headlights which I aim to fix this summer when an extra 850$ drops in my lap. Lol

I worked for Snohomish for a bit, wouldn't want to be in the outskirts with a questionable battery. Your Toyotas deserve an AGM...
