This is how I'd like to set up my rig. The only thing extra I'd like to have, is a 2" foam around the windows, 360 between the cab and cap.

If my truck was a Crew Cab with the roll down rear window, I might want that, but not on my DC. Also, those foam doughnuts around the window will wear the paint off of the truck with the movement between the camper and the cab.

I have a feeling I’m going to have to suck it up and buy new. It’s virtually impossible to find a used tundra shell

Any CrewMax owners have feedback on airflow when you roll down that glorious rear window? Noise difference? With or without the cap window installed? Or if you have the side cap windows open? I’m living in southern AZ and it’s about to start getting warm again, so I’m wondering how much of a sacrifice it’d be.

On my '06 DC with ARE top, and now with the '17 CM and LEER top, I have never had the top window behind the cab open when driving.
On the '06, with the rear windows down, the rear seat belt straps flapped pretty bad - to the point I never really rolled this way at speed. Not as bad on the '17CM, but when the rear window is down very much, it seems to force aor back into the cab. The more it is down, the more wind is forced back into the passenger space.
    YMMV.
May need to try a fairing on the shell roof bars. It might help.
This is where I really wish the Tundras had a factory cab roof rack or bar option. The fairing here I know would help.

What length Jetstream bars did you go with? Looks very sharp and functional. I'm having trouble deciding between the 60 and 70 inch bars.

@tundracap mentioned airflow circulating back into the cab with the rear cab window down with a cap on. Is that what most of you CrewMax guys have experienced? Kind of a weird question, but does anyone ever use the rear cab window for access to the bed area, kinda like a pass through?

I have a Century Cap with screened sliding side windows, sliding front window that can be popped out, and interior light (which is tied into parking lights so truck lights have to be on...).

Also has a flip cover over the key lock.

How are you guys wiring your dome light on the caps? I was gonna go straight to the battery for a constant 12v but ended up going to the trailer plug so the ignition has to be on for it to have power. Think I’ll get some led lights under the bed rails and wire them to a pin switch which will trigger them on when the tailgate is open.

I have really never used the rear cab window (in either '17 CM, or '06 DC) to access the cap area? Now I HAVE used both open to transport long material (lumber, etc. at times.
It is nice to be able to clean the cab and cap windows by alternating one open and the other closed.

Thats a killer setup Jake. I was wondering ... regarding your cap rack, did you install that yourself? I wanted to know how hard it is and what's involved. I assume it obviously involves drilling holes through the cap and of course, plugging it for weather resistance. Any precautions you have to take? Any info you can provide would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Cheers

    Tin,

Came that way from Leer. I priced out doing it myself and it was cheaper to just have Leer put it all on at the factory. You are correct in how in mounts though. Holes drilled through cap and bolted from underside with some sort of RTV sealant. No leaks yet!

Thanks for the info Jake. I am looking for a used cap for my crewmax and most do not come with a rack. I guess its better to pose the question:

Has anyone mounted a cap rack on their own and what is involved? Is it as easy as it seems or are there precautions to prevent cracking the crack when drilling? Thank you for any information provided.

    Cheers

It's not too bad. Hardest part is laying it out, there is nothing square to measure from. I put painters tape on before I drilled to keep the edges from chipping. Also, with the ARE the inside has a thicker portion in the middle of the overhead. Have to make sure you not on the taper. the Yakima rails came with RTV to put in the holes. No leaks on mine.
