Took my first mule deer with a 270 150 grain Nosler Partition and first pronghorn with 270 WSM 150 grain Fusion(300 yards). I've had an 06 but did not like the recoil. After shooting a 7mm Mag for awhile, I started developing a flinch, so I went back to the WSM. It's ultimately going to be what you can handle/shoot the best. If possible, get your hands on a few different calibers and see what feels best to you. Just my $.02

Can't beat a 30-06 for versatility and ammo availability
