VCS issues with new tires... how to fix it?

I just got a set of stock sized (285/70r17) Cooper ST/Maxx put on my '10 tundra rock warrior, and it's been a pretty nerve racking experience to be honest. Initially my truck felt like it was driving where it wanted... floated all over the road and required a lot of steering adjustment to keep it between the lines, very poor grip... felt like I was driving on ice roads. On the way home at highway speed, the tire weights flew off and hit my fender wells with a sound nearly as loud as a shotgun on both of my front wheels. Not happy with that tire shop, but they came in $250 less than the other guys.

Anyway, the truck did not feel safe to drive at all! I took it to my local firestone tire center and they re-balanced the tires and checked alignment(all good). After that, the truck was much better, but still some nasty tread squirm... I hear that is normal for a few hundred to 1k miles.

Right now what's bugging me is that when hitting the cloverleaf ramps of the highway... the front abs sounds like it's grinding really bad and the traction control light comes on until I slow it down to about 30mph (normally do it at 35-40mph). Is this something that will improve over time, or do I need to have it looked at?

Anyone else run cooper st/maxx and have similar issues?

I hope that's not the case... I'm running stock suspension right now and the tire size is the same from my original factory bfg's (285/70r17). I'll check the inside and see there's any indication of rubbing.

No signs of rubbing on the UCA or inside of the tires.. has a good 1-1.5" clearance.

 

Ok, got several hundred miles on these tires now after driving to Overland Expo East and back... the issue has completely cleared up.. tires are feeling really good now.. guess they just needed to break in a bit... did not have any issues with abs or vsc on the way back.

 

I'm running the ST Maxx as well and never had any of the problems that you are referring to!

Mine are 275/70/18. Sounds like you just needed a proper alignment and balance. Wouldn't go back to that tire shop!

 

Years ago at work we used to get MT'S on the rear of our 2500 Chevy vans and them things were squirreley for the first 1000 miles or so. Felt like ass end was on ice like you said but nothing like light issues you had.
