Here is how I installed VLEDS Universal Puddle Lights into my Trail Ridge tow mirrors.

Door Panel and Mirror Removal Video:

    Time:
    3-4 Hours

    Tools/Materials:
    VLEDS Universal Puddle Lights Kit
3’-4’ Length of Wire (for fishing wires through mirrors and in the cab)
    Silver Sharpie
    Drill
    1.5” Hole Saw
    Center Punch
    Utility Knife
    Electrical Tape
    (Optional) Scissors
    (Optional) Compass
    (Optional) Paper
    Ruler
    10mm Deep Socket
    Ratchet
    Trim Tools
    (Optional) WD-40
    2x Blue Posi-Taps
    2x 4’-5’ 18-20ga Automotive Electrical Wire
    2x 18-22ga Butt Connectors
    Wire Strippers
Pliers with wire cutters (for crimping)

    Process:
    1. Remove mirrors or work on replacement mirrors.
If you aren’t replacing your mirrors, please make sure you have enough time to get this mod done. You will have to remove the mirrors to install the lights. Don’t drive around without mirrors.

    2. Remove top mirror glass. Push the top face of the mirror so that the top is all the way down. Grasp the bottom edge of the mirror and pull up to release. (Removal may be different for OEM mirrors)

    3. Mark pin for glass heater with silver sharpie. To make sure the pins go back together correctly, I marked 1 female connector with a silver sharpie and also marked the corresponding male pin on the glass.

    4. Fully extend tow mirrors. This will make fishing the wires through the mirror a little easier. Also, this will ensure that you leave enough slack to extend the mirrors when needed.

    5. Remove weather seal from mirror. I found that it was easier to fish wires through the mirror going in this direction.

    Weather seal removed.

    6. Push your fishing wire through the mirror. Before we get to cutting any holes, you need to make sure you can fish wires through the mirror. This will be a test of the mind and body. You will start by going through the side where the weather seal was removed following the same path as the harness.

I don’t have any advice except to say, “Be patient and be resolute.” You just need to get past the first bend and eventually you can push the wire out to the other side. Once through, tuck the wire someplace out of the way. If someone has a better way, please let me know.

    7. (Optional) Create a 1.5” circle template. Use a compass and draw a 1.5” diameter circle on a sheet of paper. Cut the circle out using scissors.

    8. Decide where to cut the mounting hole. I originally wanted to mount the light in the middle of the mirror, but the support that holds the convex glass is in the way. Since the throw of the light is wide, I decided to mount it on the outside. This location also has the most “empty” space so it will not interfere with anything internally.

    9. Cut out mounting hole. Now that you’ve decided where to mount the lights, mark, center punch, and cut out the hole using your drill and 1.5” hole saw.

    10. Clean edges. Once drilled, clean the edges using a utility knife so that the 3M mounting tape has a flat surface for adhesion.

    11. (DO NOT adhere the light to the mirror yet!) Dry fit the puddle light. Make sure everything fits and check that it does not interfere with the convex glass operation.

    12. Connect light to extension wire. Pull the light out of the mirror and thread the connection through the hole. Connect the two.

    13. Fish extension wire through mirror. Take the end of the extension wire and the end of your fishing wire and hook them together. Wrap electrical tape around this connection to make sure there are no points that can get caught when you are pulling the wires through.

This is the two wires taped together and pulled through.

    14. Reinstall weather seal. Pull the extension wire through the hole for the harness connection first.

    Then reinsert the harness connection.

    15. Rinse and repeat for the other side. Before next step, use provided alcohol wipes and wipe around the mounting holes. Peel backing off lights and adhere lights to mirrors.

    16. Install mirrors. I’m not going to go over installation of the mirror themselves since that is not within the scope of the tutorial. (Video of the process is near the top of the post.) If you are replacing your mirrors, this is a quick run down: roll down windows, remove sail panel, fully remove door panel, unclip mirror harness connection, remove 3 10mm nuts holding the mirror (making sure not to drop them into the door), and remove old mirror. Make sure you are holding on to the mirror to prevent it from falling when removing the last nut. When installing the mirror, fish the extension wire through the door.

    17. Remove the speaker. Unclip the connection from the speaker and remove the 4 screws with a 10mm socket.

    18. Route the extension wire through the door. Above the speaker hole you’ll see a rubber grommet that feeds all the wires into the door. Cut a tiny slit in the rubber and push the wire through.

    19. Remove kick panel. Remove the door sill protector and the nut holding the kick panel. Now remove the kick panel.

    20. Remove control panel. Carefully, using trim removal tools, remove the control panel in the dash that has the cargo light switch. I found it easier to pry/pull from the sides rather than the top or bottom.

    21. Route fishing wire into the cab. This is another test for the mind and body. Look through the speaker hole and you can see where all the wires exit the door and into the cab. Now look at the door hinge area and you can see the rubber sleeve that runs into the cab. Where the sleeve meets the cab, slightly pull out the end of the sleeve.

Using the same fishing wire from the puddle lights installation, lube it up real nice with some WD-40. Push the fishing wire from inside the door and up through rubber sleeve. You will want to use your other hand to “guide” the wire through the sleeve. At some point, you will hit a dead end at the end of the sleeve. The wire bundle and rubber sleeve is too tight to push through, so you will have to go through the sleeve itself. Just make sure to poke through an area where the hole will be inside the cab once you reinstall the rubber sleeve. Once you are through, reinstall the end of the sleeve.

    22. Pull extension wire into the cab. Using our hook and tape trick (Step #13), pull the extension wire from the door and into the cab.

    23. Rinse and repeat for the opposite mirror. Repeat steps 13-19 for the opposite mirror.

    24. Add extra extension wire to passenger side. On the passenger side, the supplied wire from VLEDS was not long enough to reach the driver’s side so you’ll have to add extensions. I could only find 18ga wire from the local auto parts store, so that’s what I used along with butt connectors. I cut 2 pieces of wire about 4’-5’ in length. On one of the wires, I marked the ends with electrical tape so that I knew it was negative (I only bought 1 spool of black wire). Strip the ends of both wires and use butt connectors to extend the VLEDS supplied wire.

    25. Run wires from passenger to driver’s side. Using our trusty fishing wire, fish the passenger side puddle light wires behind the console along the firewall through to the driver’s side.

    26. Remove negative terminal from battery. I didn’t do this, but it would have been a good idea.

    27. Tap into Cargo Light. Using a blue Posi-Tap, tap the brown wire behind the control panel you removed earlier. This picture is from the installation instructions of the OEM Bed Lights, but is the same wire. (Not sure if this is different for later years, but this is correct for my 2014)

Strip the positive ends of the puddle lights and screw them into the Posi-Tap. NOTE: One of the wires is black because I only had black wire to extend from the passenger side. I made sure that this was the positive side before connecting.

    28. Tap ground. Under the driver’s side kick panel, you’ll see ground wires (white/black stripe). Using another blue Posi-Tap, tap into the ground. Strip the negative ends of the puddle lights and screw them into the Posi-Tapped ground wire. NOTE: I just noticed that one of the wires appears red in the picture. That is just residual red insulation from when I pulled the two wires apart.

    29. Reconnect battery and test. Test by switching the cargo light switch on and off. Alternatively, you can open and close any door or lock and unlock using the key fob. This should all trigger the cargo/puddle lights to turn on.

    30. Hide wiring and reinstall all panels. I hid all the wiring from the passenger side under the carpet on both sides. Reinstall all the panels and you’re done!

I think the OEM Tow Mirrors will be very similar. The OEM non-tow mirrors would be even easier to route the lights through the mirror. My original plan was to install the lights in my OEM regular mirrors, but @YeeYeeTundra offered me a great deal on a used set of Trail Ridges.

Welcome! I got 6000k. I would have ordered 5500k if they had it since all my other VLEDS are 5500k.

Technically this could be done with any brand of puddle lights, but you won’t be disappointed with VLEDS.

VTYOTA, I have read through your post a couple of times now, and have a question. I’m not planning to install tow mirrors. If I am sticking with my factory mirrors (defrost, no puddle, no signal) can I leave the mirror housings on the truck?

I realize the mirrors will have to come out, and I will have to drill the 1.5” hole through the bottom of the housing with the housings still on the truck (awkward but not difficult), but is there any reason they would HAVE to come off?

Also- my VLEDS universal kit came with six feet of extra wire for each lamp. Will I still need to add on to the passenger side, or will the 6’ get me all the way to the cargo wire?

Thanks for the great write up!

It takes like 3 min to remove door panel and mirrors, you’ll only end up frustrated by trying to work around your door by leaving them on...6ft of wire will get you from the mirror into the door then into to the cab with very little left, you’ll need more wire...

The mirror housings don't technically need to come out, but you will have to remove the sail panels and the door panels anyways to route the wires into the cab. Since you will be going through the trouble to do all that, I would go ahead and take the mirror housings off. It's just three nuts per side to remove the housing. I would imagine taking them off will also make it a lot easier to fish the wires through the actual mirror. This video shows how to remove the sail/door panels and mirrors if you've never done it before. (Be very careful when removing the nuts to the mirrors. If you drop them into the door, they will go to door heaven and you will never see them again.)

Yes, you will need to extend the wires on the passenger side if you want to tap into the cargo circuit. That 6' of wire provided will only get you to the passenger side kick panel. You need to get it over to the drivers side kick panel and dash.

Let me know if you have any other questions. It's time consuming but fun and worth it! Good luck!

As an FYI to anybody, I attempted this mod on my factory Toyota POWER FOLDING Tow mirrors and couldn’t even get the wire started to fish it thru as the harness disappeared into an abyss around a plastic corner deep within the mirrors. Not sure how much different they are than the OP’s mirrors, but I’ve got a few years of electrical experience and a ton of auto-elec experience and couldn’t see a feasible route. The harness you try to follow, goes around a plastic bend deep within the mirror and then you have no control or idea of where it’s going from there. Gave it the old college try for an hour and decided to pack it up and consider it impossible...somebody please prove me wrong...strong work OP, great mod...

Thank you sir. This is exactly why I started fishing wires through before cutting any holes. The trickiest part is getting around that first bend where the harness makes an almost a 90 degree turn into the support in the pivot point. Once I got past that point (you can see it through the gap in the pivot point), I just kept shoving wire until it eventually came through. I think the end of the fishing wire can get caught on an edge and loop around itself. I think if it were OEM mirrors it will be easier.

EDIT: By OEM I meant OEM non-tow mirrors.

Be very careful with the plastic tab that holds the mirror in place once the 3 bolts are removed from behind the sail (tweeter area)...it makes it so the mirror just doesn’t fall onto the ground, but needs pinched from 2 sides while pulling the mirror away from truck...

I felt I had a better chance going from behind the mirrors, the opposite of the OP, but again, I was unsuccessful. I wasn’t about to pull the actual mirror from the housing on these expensive AF mirrors, but if I adjusted them all the way “in”, I could see a 1/2” hollow tube resting on the bottom of the mirror (on the inside), I was able to get a fishing wire in there and all the way up to the motor area of the mirrors (9”), but couldn’t make the 90 degree turn that I only assume is there. I gave up after realizing that even if I did get the wire thru to the harness side, it was likely going to be so deep inside the mirror housing and likely not visible, I said screw it. Again, hail to the OP getting this done...

I am imagining I can just follow the wires for the mirror defrost to route my puddle wires... -yeah?

I did this mod in the OEM Tow mirrors. The fishing inside the mirror is slightly different. All wires are in a bundle and that bundle is inside a rubber "conduit". Dont try to run another wire thru there because it is sealed at the end and wires won't exit. You have to stay out of the rubber conduit and use the same route it uses. Apparently inside the mirror shaft it can go two ways, one that will make the wires be in the way for the mirror to extend and retract(you are going to see the cable exit thru the shaft hole) and another, that is the good route, that allows unblocked extend and retract(The cable will exit underneath the shaft hole). Sorry I don't have pictures, the last thing on my mind at the moment was taking pictures, like @VTYOTA said, that is the moment were your mind and body gets tested. I used the vleds and extension cables. Great mod!F4616A43-4559-4A67-B61E-903FFFF8F4A5.jpg

Nice, did you have to remove mirror glass to accomplish? Seeing how large these tow mirrors are, you should do 2 leds per side, lol...

Looks great @tanabersx ! You’re going to love them. I still enjoy watching them turn on when I unlock the car. How relieved were you when you saw that first wire push through the housing? After the first, I was confident about the second mirror.

You should try it again @Jrharvey02 ! I know you didn’t remove the mirror the first time, but I think its almost a requirement.
