    Hey all,

What do you think about the dongle from Insurance companies like Allstate for example being connected to the OBD Port in Tundras. Any horror stories or issues one might know of? I currently have StateFarm and have a perfect driving history with no tickets or accidents ever and paying $120.00 a month for full coverage. I was thinking about this Milewise program Allstate is offering since I don't drive my truck that much during the week and take Mass Transit to work. I have been working with an agent from Allstate since Thursday of last week and my cycle for my current insurance ends on the 21st of this month. So basically all set to jump ship and go with Allstate but all weekend, I been having this ill feeling in me about this whole dongle thing and basically putting my privacy out there this entire past weekend and I'm always like, If it doesn't feel right then don't do it. I just don't want to screw with my electrical system in my truck.

    Any input?

    Thanks!!

I have it on my 03 expedition. I would NEVER put it on my Tundra. That crap scores acceleration and braking too and is full of crap on what it calls moderate or severe braking/acceleration. I've not once gotten a perfect driving score, much less above 95/100 and I only drive that truck 4 mile a day average .

That would be Drivewise so I was told. I would be getting Milewise where as it only records your location and Miles. I emphasized that I dont want to have my braking and all that crap monitored and he assured me that with the Milewise, it will not do that. I been thinking about this all weekend while driving my truck and I really feel my privacy takes precedence over this whole thing. Also dont want to find that my truck wont start the next morning or have my dash light up like an xmas tree.

Yeah I hear ya plus I don't want to deal with all the BS of apps and monitoring myself and what not. I monitor my damn self when I get behind the wheel and drive. Just simply pay my insurance bill every month and be done with it.

They would look at my data and raise my rates. "Why does he turn off his traction control and hit the tow button every time he gets in?"

I had it on my Tacoma and my Camry. I got around $200 per vehicle discount (per 6-month contract). My son was driving the Camry - he drives like an old man. My Tacoma was parked in the driveway most of the time since I had a company vehicle for DD. I am sure the way I drive the Tundra I would NOT get a discount LOL. But, when I traded the Tacoma for the Tundra they just transferred the savings to the Tundra, assuming I would continue the same driving style.

I ended up cancelling the whole thing and just continuing with my current insurance. Feel at peace now. Can't put savings on my privacy in any way shape or form.

I deal with auto insurance and these apps/ports daily. I don't deal with allstate specifically but other companies such as ( travelers, progressive, safeco) some give you the option to plug into your vehicle or use a cell phone app. MANY people are very skeptical when they hear "monitoring your driving" (even though they have alexa listening to them at home or on-star in vehicle) The companies I have experience with give you a %discount off for simply signing up for the app/plug in. IF you have bad driving habits once your policy renews you will simply lose the sign up discount. IF you're a good driver you will receive more % of a discount once your policy renews....THIS IS ALL based state to state. I only deal with PA been told other states give insurance co the right to INCREASE your premium if you're a bad/risky driver based on the data they receive.

Any company out there offering the app or plug in device will monitor the following: Hard/Fast acceleration, Hard Braking, If you drive during hours say 11pm-5AM they automatically think you're up to no good, Miles driven per day, I've also heard rumors if you use the cell app instead of plug in device they can tell if you're texting and driving... I used one of the plug in devices for 1 month just to test one out for a company.

I did this on my wife's 4-Runner and my F-150( I know bad decision, but look at me now) and I can tell you this much it damn near got us kiiled a couple of times. Accelerating to pass, trying to stop on a late light change etc. Since we always take the wife's vehicle on the road for trips she got a minimal discount, I on the other hand got a better discount but not a great discount. My commute is 1.7 miles one way and hers is about the same. Another thing they look at is the hours you operate the vehicle. If you plan to go out on a weekend and be late coming in let your friends drive :)

This is with Allstate in North New Jersey and he said that the braking monitoring and all that is if you sign up with "Drivewise" What I would have been signing up for would have been "Milewise" where they just monitor the miles driven and location. That didnt bother me too much but you never know with these salesmen and if they are lying or not. What bothers me the most is something connecting to my computer system possibly screwing it up as I heard from others ( different make and models) or draining the battery overnight at some point. Who knows?. Thing is that this has been bothering me and on my mind all last weekend and if it has been bothering me all weekend without the device even installed, then I know it would be bothering me every time I drive my truck with the device installed so for a peace of mind, said forget it.

If you're plugging a device into your computer they're monitoring way more than your mileage.

My simple way of looking at it is this:

If it benefits you the customer more than it benefits them as a company than they wouldn’t offer it.

My job requires that I work during those "sketchy-behavior" hours, so this wouldn't be of any benefit to me, but what I'd kinda like to do is get one of these and only use it while putting around in low range. ;) See what they think of that...:p

LOL!!!..yeah for real...whats up with the "non peak" hours?....if anything, it would safer to drive at 3:00 AM with hardly no traffic at that time. I actually said to the salesman...I said..I dont care to much about monitoring my GPS because you will be seeing all the drug runs I make in the wee hours...he didnt respond to that....just continued to talk my ears off.

So some "jack wad" cut you off and you get on the binders, how is that your fault? That is daily driving around here. Even keeping proper following distance 4 wheelers just use that area as their personal property. And it's just getting worse.

Another thing I might add is the Pre-Collision sensor that triggers the “BRAKE” on its own when there is no real reason to brake. Car in front of you is way ahead. Im sure THIS would be logged against you into the Milewise or Drivewise report and wasn't even your fault.

It all seems so good to sign up for but once you start using it, you will start to see all the bad crap associated with it from your NORMAL driving. In my area, constant aholes that dont know how to drive and got their license out of a cracker jack box and I constantly have to brake and swerve since they just come out of no where like they are the only damn idiots on the road. THIS is why insurance rates are high as it is. Too many claims from people who simply should not be on the road period. Also insurance scams. This is why I got a dash cam. Best insurance investment ever!!
