How to Contain Oil When Draining

Just did my first oil change. Due to the drain plug at an angle, the oil splashed off my pan and onto the passenger side tire. I did not jack up the truck, just slid under it. Maybe I need to pu the pan all the way up next to the drain? What method to u guys use when drawing the oil to reduce splashing?

 

Put some blocks under the pan. Works for me. I have a flat dolly I put together that way I can just roll the pan out. No muss no fuss

 

Is it @csuviper that has the bad ass hose attachment thing? Didn't I see that in your build thread once? If I am remembering correctly when I change my oil next I'm doing that.

 

Fumoto only way to go, use a union (don't remember the size) and piece of rubber hose to transfer to container of your choice. But the messy part is still the oil filter..

 

mine always hits the cross member and splatters all over me, my driveway, my wheels, and brakes. Id you, or at least for me, do the oil filter with that plug nozzle thing it's perfectly fine and empty when i take it off.

 

Oil filter is not a problem as you can use a 1qt or soda bottle with the drain adapter to collect the oil.

Thanks, that looks like F-103N. I wish I knew about this so I would've installed it on my 1st oil change. Now I gotta plan to put some kind of shield to deflect the oil downward toward the pan on my next change. I'll get one for my Prius as well.

 

Literally just watched the dealership do the first oil change. I normally don't like this, but 25k of oil changes and tire rotations can't be scoffed. The tech there used a piece of aluminum, v shaped and about 1 foot long, like a gutter. Neat's a treat. Simple. Clean. No need to remove the little drain plug thing from the filter either. Oil just ran down the gutter and into the collection pan. Sometimes the simple fixes are the best He also had a nice spray bottle of brake cleaner that cleaned the little messes up nicely. Needless to say, I learned something.

 

I love the Fumoto, had one on the semi tractor we towed our 40 fifth wheel. It took 11 GALLONS of oil, so being able to turn off the flow at oil changes was handy. So, does anyone know how far the threaded end of the Fumoto sticks into the pan? That will reduce the amount of oil that will drain out. Just curious. Also, are you guys that are running a Fumoto using a hose clamp to prevent a rock, etc. from opening the valve on the road?
