So, in the roof console, there's the sunglass holder up front then the giant useless clip thingy. Does anyone know what's behind it? Is there a little cavity like the sunglass holder? Can it be removed? Is there a way to pull the whole console down?

Comes down pretty easy. Pull that clip thingy cover off, then I believe it was 4 screws and the whole thing comes down. I think it's where the sunroof/moon roof controls are suppose to be? Lots of plastic there which is also connected to the lights. I was looking to put rocker switches there, but it looks like a lot more work than I wanted to put into it.

Nice. Didn't realize that the clip portion would pop off by itself. I think I'm going to mount the HAM faceplate there. Need to pull it off and do some tinkering.

I actually just started doing some work on the overhead console on my 2017. I want to put a coax switch and possibly some other things in that space, so I pulled that panel off this afternoon. There is some additional structure behind it (possibly for some features my truck does not have), but nothing that looks critical. I started drawing up a blank to 3D print, and I will try and finish up a fitment tomorrow to verify the 2D profile. Once I have the blank drawn up I will upload the .stl to youmagine.

    Thank You,

    Johnny

great mock up @johnny0t ! I am a new tundra owner who will be modifying for camping/overlanding and have been disappointed with the options thus far for the locations of new accessory switches. The overhead is the best location and will be my choice. With respect to your design, is it a plug/n/play piece? ie. are the OEM tabs printed on the part so that it will simply 'pop' into place of the old piece? if so, would you consider printing the piece for purchase? I think you are on to something huge with this design!
    Thanks for the great work.

I honestly do not know what the compartments are for. But I been eye balling this over my current short ceiling console.

@hnsmrob Thank you! That design does include all of the tabs, and some relief geometry for an OE fit, and it is quite snug. That design is meant to be a starting point for further customization, so it would really not do you much good without adding geometry for the switches, or whatever else you wanted to do with it. I do not have any interest in producing these (at least not with a 3D printer), but if you do not have access to a 3D printer you can upload the design to https://www.3dhubs.com/ to find somebody who can print it for you (and even get multiple quotes before buying). I would recommend ABS for the material (which is what I will use when I do the final print for mine), as it should (theoretically) tolerate the heat of a vehicle in summer better than PLA.

@SiberianTundra I considered doing the same thing, but without knowing what it would take to install the larger console I do not want to start down that path. I am a little bit leary of what it might entail to get everything mounted correctly and in a sturdy fashion.

@johnny0t, thanks for the info. I'll be pursuing this further and I'll post my progress for anyone else who is interested or has struggled to find an ideal location for switches.

FYI - $26 to have the 3d printed piece of abs from 3dhubs.
Might have it printed just to do some tinkering myself.

This setup came on my 07 tundra and I loved it. The two back ones are like large sunglasses doors but double the size of the actual one. I used to keep all sorts of things up there. The one just after the sunglasses cubby is basically a flip down paperclip deal. In my new tundra I only get the sunglasses one and a stupid plastic paper clip thing that is the most useless thing I’ve even seen. I have been searching how to put the old setup on my new truck, I’m hoping it’ll work.

Someone please do this and then tell me it is pretty dang close to plug and play..... It would cause a nation-wide shortage of the part.

if you search ebay for 2007-2013 overhead console there are so many. But I do not think they will fit. We might need the headliner as well
