Yep accelerates, holds gears better and doesn’t hunt for gears like it did before. MPG up too. Worth the money, and makes your transmission happy too

My mpg stayed the same or went down a bit with 4.88 gears and 34.5” tires. Acceleration is better, though.

Actually the good gear calculators, like the one I referenced, take into account your transmission gearing too. That's why it can give you an approximate, but still somewhat accurate, indication of RPM's at various speeds.

You mpg's went up compared to what? 34's and stock 4.30's? Have you re-calibrated your speedometer and odometer?

Yep went up from when it was stock 430s with 34s. Yeah I recalculated.

for the 2018's the diff oil that Toyota recommends is 75W-90. I'm literally on the Nitro website about to pull the trigger and am wondering if you guys are running the Nitro 80w-140 gear oil they recommend or if you are using stock gear oil?

I am running 80/90 non synthetic because I have Auburn LSD and that’s what they recommend. I’m sure that’s good gear oil but you might want to use conventional initially because you have to change the fluid at 500 miles.

I'm only doing 4.88 gears, will change the fluid at 500 miles but after that should I be running the 80W-140 gear oil from Nitro?

Nice you won’t regret it. Let’s us know how you like them. Follow the break in procedure too.

Also when u pick it up only drive 15 miles or so and let it completely cool down before driving again. That the important part. No towing too in the first 500

South Korea as I was told by Nitro, in the same factory as the OEM gears.

Just had my 4.88's installed. While I can't get on it yet because I'm still in the break-in period, the truck feels very different -- almost like it's lighter on it's feet, if that makes sense.

I also had the ECGS bushing installed to replace the needle bearing. This really tightened up the front end and got rid of the play I had in the CV axle.

Wrote this in my build thread as well but:

Yo, just put on the first 150 mi with the 4.88 gears. I can’t tell you truly how it feels yet but as far as I feel, it shifts better and feels lighter on its feet. By no means does it go from 0-60 mi/hr instantly but it doesn’t feel like it’s trying its hardest to get going. After driving it, is it worth it still? Yes. Will post back when I am able to hit the gas a little harder and swap out the gear oil after the break in period.

Do these kill highway gas mileage? I want to do it as my truck feels sluggish with bigger tires, even with a pedal commander. I don’t want to drop to 10 mpg or less going 70 mph though.

At work I make several short trips during the day of 2 miles or less. I think it would help mileage there. I average 11-12 mpg now whether I get on it or try to drive easy.

I keep looking at these, but went to a local shop and was told it was a waste of money and everything I read on forums was bs. I won’t go back there now.

i had heavy 35s toyo rt and not sure the 4.88s would have been worth it..youd def notice a difference but unless you really like the skinny pedal i didnt notice that much loss in power and it didnt hunt for gears on the hwy.

i then upgraded to heavy 37s toyo rt again 78lb each and def noticed a loss in power, i had to mash the throttle instead of tapping it to hang the ass end out on dirt roads, and it was constantly shifting between 5/6th on the hwy really annoying, say goodbye to cruise control.

now with 4.88s and JBA headers the truck feels like a race car, the headers brought the power back, the gears brought back my MPG and made it cruise on the hwy without hunting for gears. spins em real easy now. getting 13mpg woot woot

Two weeks post install and here are my thoughts...

Drives amazing, feels like I’m back to stock power and shift points.

MPGs pre regearing 10.X city and 12.X highway. POST regearing, 13.X city and 16.X highway. I’m on 35s with a stage 6 icon setup.

    Beast mode is unreal!

    Off road, much much better.

Highway, running just shy of 2k rpm at 70mph and back in the stock power band. No gear hunting whatsoever.

Overall, one of my favorite mods! If you’re one the fence, take the leap and enjoy!!
