When I was an engineering contract consultant I had a few extra bucks to buy some toys with. First up was a Freedom Arms Model 83 Premier in .454 Casull I orderd in 2011 (made to order, the lead time is about 9 weeks). I followed it up with a Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley in .454 Casull in 2016. Similar in format but worlds apart in quality and precision (I still love them both though).

We had some fun at the range when I fired both at the same time. It was cool to see two basketball sized fireballs light up the place. I have a book on revolvers that has pictures of animals that have been hunted with the Freedom Arms .454 that include elephant, giraffe, cape buffalo as well as all of the north American big game species. I don't hunt anymore but just like the power and ruckus these brute put forth.

Interesting story: I was blasting away at the handgun range at our outdoor gunclub whe I noticed a group of about six walk in and sit down behind me. They were from the shotgun range about 100 yards away (rifle range is between the handgun range and the shotgun range). I noticed them and asked if they wanted to set up, I would take a break if that was the case. They said no, they just wanted to see what all the racket was about. I offered to let them shoot the revolver, but no - they just wanted to watch.

    So, I obliged...

I tried to pick up a new Ruger Alaskan a few years back in .454 after shooting someone else’s at the range. Had it on order for months and in the mean time picked up brass, lead and a set of reloading dies for it. Unfortunately Ruger stopped making them for a while (not sure if they have picked up production since) so I had to settle for a lightly used .500 S&W. Still want that damn Alaskan though!

They are amazing. Almost no cylinder gap (maybe .002") and zero rotational play at full cock. It is also the only firearm I have ever purchased that came with full reloading data.

Amazingly heavy but extremely capable. If you happen to miss when firing at the perp, you might be able to set him on fire with the huge fireball that thing puts out.

Nice wheelguns. I was thinking about the huge muzzle flash indicating unburned powder and that someone otta make a carbine in 454 to take advantage.

I recently had a chance to play with a .460

The cool thing is you can throw .45lc and .454 through it. I went back to back .454 to .460 and was really suprised at the difference.

    I'm shopping for a .460 now.

I have a Rossi stainless 92 in .454. I'm still working on getting the right sights on it but it is a pretty good thumper. I wish there were other choices in .454 like the Winchester 92 or Marlin 94.

Shooting these takes a completely different approach to managing the recoil than other handguns. It is important to not allow the wrist to pivot at all and to rigidize the muscle structure there. I adopted a modified Weaver stance and let my entire arm absorb the recoil, straight back, rotating up slightly at the shoulder. Very manageable that way. I've shot these single handed but prefer the left hand support of the Weaver.

(removed the videos, could not get them to work - darn).
