They all do. The steel used is a low grade stainless. Either clean it and paint or clean and fluid film regularly.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.
Yes, they do get surface rust. Agree with above, or move to an area of the country away from the ocean and humidity.

I plan on painting my pipes.. anyone have experience and have recommendations? Any brand recommendations that offers the paint in the can instead of aerosol?

I just ordered the TRD exhaust and thinking I might paint the tail pipes as well while it's off the truck and new. I was thinking about something like this although I have never used it before...

I picked up a 1 year old Tundra with the TRD exhaust. It had the surface rust too. I spent a couple hours "on my back" sanding it down with metal sand paper. Then cleaned thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. Then another hour or so with a short handled paint brush and POR 15 high temp paint (flat black from the can). Less than $40 in supplies, but a lot of time. Worth it though - looks way better, and should be protected from future surface rust.

Yea that stuff is pretty legit, I used it on an exhaust tip and came out very nice, just made sure to prep by sanding and primer. Just figured on a larger pieces like the pipes, application with a brush and high temp paint would be easier and more controllable compared to spray

TRD exhaust is Junk. I will end up replacing mine with a Borla when it rusts through. And it will, sooner than later.

I have read on here... not sure to the validity...that Borla makes the TRD dual exhaust for toyota.

If they do, Toyota is only paying for 409 stainless and not the 304 stainless that Borla uses in their exhausts that they sell.

I was searching for that thread and could not find it. It might have been on another Tundra site. If you google it ... you might get something...not sure.

For the money the TRD cost, I wish it would not rust the way it does. That being said I put a couple of cans of VHT on it and it’s all good. I don’t consider it junk by no means.

Tenneco and MBRP are the names I hear tossed around as being the manufacturer of the current TRD exhaust. I don't know though.....

I like how the TRD exhaust sounds, so a little work to preserve the pipes is worth it to me.

Tenneco would explain a lot, that’s right down the road from me.

Its underneath the vehicle where salt - water - grime - dirt and who knows what else splashes up on the pipe - its to be expected - nothing stays new forever.

Yes, Painted the dual tips pipes as well but couldn't find a pic of them painted. Painted the tips also with semi-gloss black finish.

It's the muffler section of the TRD exhaust. I just painted the pipes with VHT ceramic paint and left the mufflers as is.

I left them as is as I dont think they will rust. They're made of a higher grade stainless steel than the pipes.

high heat primer and high heat paint would be optimal. rustoleum makes some, vht, etc... lots of choices.

For what its worth, years ago I had a set of headers ceramic coated. They still looked great when I sold the car 10+ years later.
Might be a way to make your exhaust last forever.
