I was thinking of maybe doing a road trip up to Colorado when the spring rolls around, after most of the snow and ice is gone and things begin to green up. I know several of you live up that way and was curious what you'd recommend, where to go, what to see.

I live in San Antonio and just wanting to see the mountains and nature again. I don't have a 4x4 though, so can't go to far off road, ha.

Anyway, just trying to get some ideas in mind. Thanks!

Snowfall can last up to Mother's Day.

There are plenty of places to see and go-just depends how far you want to explore and your interests.

Buena Vista is a fun place to stop, it's west of Colorado Springs a ways. If you want to go up over the Continental Divide there's plenty of places to rent four wheelers, there may still be enough snow by late spring to where I'd hesitate taking a 2WD over some of the passes. Tin Cup Pass is a favorite of mine.

It doesn't have to technically be spring, it can be a little after. I wasn't sure when was the best time. I thought maybe up to Colorado Springs area, but wasn't sure. I've been skiing before in Pagosa Springs and Durango. Probably stay in some bed and breakfasts along the way.

Maybe instead of taking my truck I should just rent a 4x4.. ha I know to see the really cool stuff I'll need to go down some trails.

Rent\borrow 4x4 for the just in case. I would recommend coming mid July\August as all the trails should be open by then. Most can be done in 2wd but its sure nice to go in 4wd if needed. Alpine Loop area is my favorite part of CO for trails, more scenic and less difficult which makes the wife happy.

Yeah, my wife is not much of the camper, so wherever we go would need to be near some cool small towns or something to provide lodging. Takes about 14 hours from here to Colorado Springs, so we'll probably stop somewhere between. Use 2-3 days to drive around, see the sights, and then drive home.

Old Stage Road, Phantom Canyon road, Garden of the Gods, Rampart Range road(take this out of garden of gods to woodland park), Divide in the Hayman burn area can all be done by a car, let alone a 2wd Tundra. These are all accessible from Colorado Springs.

Is Rampart open now from garden of the gods? Thoughts it's been closed since the fire?

Rocky Mountain National Park if you're planning to drive that far. You got Estes Park and can come out the west side and also see Grand Lake. Pretty up there too.

Yep, Rampart is open again. i have not taken it yet, but heard it was open.

X10 on RMNP. I could live there. We would rotate every other year on our annaversary going up to RMNP or the condo in Beaver Creek.

The Buena Vista area is pretty much full of awesomeness as well. Lots to do with family and friends.

Never been in the spring or summer, I bet the views are even more stunning than the photos. I have to get up there.
