As the title implies, I have the dreaded cam tower leak. I am wondering if anyone in SoCal (San Diego) has had this work done and had a good experience/outcome, and is willing to recommend a dealer. I am dreading having a dealer service tech take my engine apart, but I want to get the work done before my CPO warranty expires. Any advice is appreciated.

Temecula Valley Toyota has been taking good care of my warranty work. I would never pay a dealer my own money, but for warranty work they are top notch. They never give me sht about off roading and they go out of their way to sell the warranty claim to Toyota Corporate.

Ask for the service manager, August. Tell him Alex with the highly modified black off road tundra with the tent on the bed sent you. (He thought my tent was magic haha)

Thanks osidepunker. I'll put them at the top of the list. Had the leak reoccur after resealing? Ouch.

yep. I don't blame the dealer, its a flaw in the design. Next time it happens it will be on my dime so I'll look for an independent shop to do the work or maybe try to tackle it myself. Its just a damn valve cover, how hard could it be?

Yep. That’s why it costs what it does.

There’s a reason the service department charges 3500.00+

    For $3500 I'll deal with a leak

Although, the last one was leaking onto my manifold and smoke was getting into my cab

Yeah, a lot of goodies have to be removed, put back together, and then hopefully properly sealed.

Did the dealership do just one side at a time or the complete job twice?

Rare to have it happen twice on a complete CT repair. Then again, you’re not the typical owner either. So there is that. Lol

The only other San Diego toyota dealer I would go to is Carlsbad. When I bought my truck, the finance lady was talking about her sequoia getting done.
I do not like Kearny Mesa because of some bad experiences.

Yeah, that's why I'm asking for some recommendations. I bought from NormReeves toyota in mission valley, but I get a bad feeling about their service team.

I like Carlsbad sales WAY better than temecula. I actually refuse to buy locally.

But I don't have nay experience with their service department.

this is a very personal experience for people, all in their own interactions. Personally I DESPISE TV Toyota, they are the worst in every aspect from sales, to service. My multiple experiences (not with the tundra, but previous vehicles) was so bad, I would have my Tundra towed somewhere else if it broke down in their parking lot. I even had Greg Curtis (the service director) on a previous 4Runner fight me on warranty work for an ac blower that was making noises saying I caused the problem....I shudder every time I drive by that place.

Well I'm not trying to push a stealership on anyone. They are all crooks.

But I've had over a dozen warranty claims with them and they have gone out of their way for me. And I'm talking about big jobs. For example, I have a full spring under axle conversion with bed cage and 16" bypasses. My whole rear axle has been modified. But my diff started making a hum on acceleration and they swapped the entire diff no questions asked.

new fuel tank pump (twice) because I smashed it on rocks and they never asked what I did to it. they heard a noise they replaced it.

ventilation unit inside the dash was caked with dirt and stopped switching between floor and vent. They never asked why my cab was full of dirt, they just swapped it out.

New speed sensor because a rock smashed it. They didn't ask why it was smashed, they just replaced it.

And lots of other nit noid crap that didn't really have anything to do with wheeling. The tundra is a rock solid truck, but I beat the sht out of it and stuff breaks haha

Maybe its you and not them...

“Hi, my 2014 4Runner that I bought here a year ago is making a clicking noise when the ac is on max”

They call me The next day “we notice you have a car seat, and we found a little spilt milk Under the mat, we think the ac system uptook the milk and caused a vent to stick when it dried, therefore it’s not warranty and the cost will be 800 to fix.”

2 weeks and fighting with the entire service department , and only after escalating to Toyota and opening a case did they begrudgely fix it
    .

Despite how ludacrious that justification for non warranty is, it’s par for the course for that place, and wasn’t the last time I had an issue.

So clearly it must have been me

Sorry if my thread has stirred up shit. I appreciate the positive and negative experiences you both shared. I'm guessing I'll get a similar story if I ask any 3 customers of a single dealer.

Toyota of hb did mine. So far so good.

I’ve heard one of the Long Beach Toyota dealerships do a good job as well.
