Hey, everybody! Let me preface this post by saying (and please forgive me) that in a couple of weeks this truck is going up for sale. I have one more trade show I have to attend with it and then like every April, I have to start something new (story below).

I've been meaning to make this post for a while now but have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to yet. For those I haven't met outside the forum, my name's Bill and I'm the marketing director for Rostra Accessories. We manufacture aftermarket and OE 12-volt electronics including cruise control systems, LED lighting, seat heaters, backup and around-view camera systems and more. A big part of my job for the past decade has been selecting the vehicle we'll be using at the SEMA Show (we have a large booth inside the Las Vegas Convention Center) and then getting that vehicle built-out with products from our company and others, and then getting the truck or car to and from the show. Last Fall, we built the truck I'll be detailing below - a 2018 TRD Sport CrewMax Tundra in Blazing Blue Pearl:

    First Day!
I got this truck from Modern Toyota in Greensboro, NC. They beat everyone else's price by almost 10% so it was a no-brainer for me. In the span of about 48 hours, I talked to their salesperson online, paid, and then the truck was waiting in my driveway when I got home one day after work. All in all it was the least painless purchasing process of my life. Here's what it looked like back then (slick as hell, I know):

Day Two - ESP Under-seat Storage
I came here from the land of the Tacoma (Tacoma World) where I have spent a few years detailing the six (!) Tacomas that I've built. One thing that hit me in the face right away was the weird contrast between the Tundra's interior space and limited interior storage (unless we're talking about cup holders). Because we develop products at work for Toyota, we have Tundras in and out of our offices all the time so I knew this, but I instantly missed having storage under the rear seats and behind them like the Tacoma had. Enter ESP Truck Accessories.

I chose their least expensive plastic under-seat liner and it has worked well for storing tow straps, jumper cables, and tire repair stuff. The install was so easy using the template they have integrated into the box that the thing arrives in and I highly recommend getting one if you don't have a storage solution already.

Step 1 - Use the template to outline your cuts
    [IMG]

Step 2 - Trip the carpet where you outlined and remove the foam from underneath
    [IMG]

Step Three - Push the liner into place and fill 'er up[IMG]

    More to come!

    Week 2
My focus during the second week of Tundra ownership was interior and exterior lighting. My wife and I live in a rural part of North Carolina and the wildlife sometimes sets up shop under my truck from time to time (snakes in particular), so I like to see what's there when I approach in the darkness in the early morning. One of the products we make at work for Toyota is our undercarriage/puddle lighting and interior footwell lighting. Likewise, in the lead-up to the SEMA Show, my employer acquired a company in Florida called Auer Automotive who, if you don't know the name, I'd bet you probably have seen their 2-in-1 LED fog lamps with integrated DRL (I'll get back to those in a bit).

    Puddle Lights:
Our puddle lights are integrated into the truck's dome light circuit and illuminate at the same time as the dome light, so whenever I unlock the doors with the keyfob or open a door. If you're interested in the kit, I'd refer you to this link with Sparks Parts. My pictures don't do the light intensity justice, but they are fantastic to have.

    Under-hood Lighting:
Since I was working on this truck all the way up until late October when it starts getting dark early, I wanted some exterior lighting under the hood and so I chose to use two bed light kits from Auer Automotive. Here's a link to the product on the website. I used these in the bed too but I don't have any pictures yet.

    Week 3!
I'm not a fast driver but, like I said above, I live in a safe small town and there's not much for the police to do - which I'm grateful for, don't get me wrong. Likewise, I was DRIVING this truck from North Carolina to Las Vegas and back, so I wanted some extra protection from potential speeding tickets. I could get a gangly-looking radar detector and hang it on the windshield with suction cups, but I like better-looking integration, so I chose the PRO-3700 system from the Whistler Group, picked a spot on the dash, and drilled some big 'ol holes (#getyourmindoutofthegutter).

To start, I made a template in Adobe Illustrator to fit the housing that holds the PRO-3700's digital display. I then cut that template into some cardboard (perfect fit!) and then started looking around for a spot on the dashboard for the display to fit.

If you don't know this, the spot on the dashboard above the radio is hollow. Likewise, it sits at just the right angle for the digital display to be visible while driving, so I decided it was here that I would mount it.

    I applied the template:

    Drilled pilot holes:

Rounded out the pilot holes with a stepper bit:

    Rounded them out some more:

    And some MORE:

I then removed the template and cut from the top side of one hole to the top side of the other with a Dremel MultiMax oscillating saw. Then the same for the bottom of the two holes - cut one to the other:

I popped in the display housing to check fitment:

And then I put the digital display into the housing to check alignment with the dashboard:

I t-tapped the wiring into the power outlet plug temporarily to check the system and we have a successful power-on!

For the front-mount sensor, I removed the grille and used the included brackets for a vertical installation (the sensor includes a reflector shield to use when you are not mounting it horizontally):

View of the sensor through the grille (Whistler's head engineer told me at SEMA that this was perfectly acceptable):

I mounted the rear sensor underneath the back bumper (not ideal as I'm always afraid it could get ripped off):

I put the laser sensor in the upper left of the windshield:

The GPS sensor on the driver-side dashboard (this alerts you to stop light cameras based on a database you download and add to the module):

    Lift-Wheels-Tires

There's probably no less than 20 companies to get a lift kit from for your Tundra. I generally start out basic with my suspension systems to save on costs in the short-term and then go from there upgrading components depending on what the truck feels like it needs. With that in mind, for this build, I started with the MaxTrac K946764 6" lift. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're familiar with the beefy MaxTrac spindles and you likely know what basic lifting blocks look like. Considering how I've had to use this truck, which is mostly to get to and from trade shows, I haven't needed reservoir shocks or Deaver/Atlas leaf springs YET, so this kit was ideal to give me the spacing needed to fit 35" tire (more on those in a second).

In my past builds, I've always been happy with the way in which the wheel and tire combo didn't stick out much past the fenders. With the Tundra being a larger truck than the Tacomas I had been working with, I wanted something this time around thad had an overall wider stance. As such, I ended up choosing the V-Rock Offroad Wheel VR10x RECOIL in a 20"x12" with -44 offset. I chose the gloss black with milled face, although I really like the matte finish they offer on this wheel too.

And for tires, as I have done for the past 3 years since their release to the market, I went with the General Grabber X3 in 35x12.50R20.

It's quiet on the road but aggressive when it needs to be. I hate to skip too far forward, but here they are in action at Overland Expo East. What I'm driving on there is the main walkway and we were told specifically to not spin our tires. That would have cleared the treads for sure, but I had to keep it slow and steady:

I LOVE a good truck shell - especially when it has a level of utility built into it that extends beyond "keeps stuff in your bed dry". That's great too, but if I'm going to in any way limit the way in which the bed can be used by adding a cap, that cap better have some neat features. And I think I hit it out of the park this year with the selection of the A.R.E. MX HD shell with lift-up rear gate, walk-in back door, side-mount toolboxes, and A.R.E.'s Ascend roof basket.

For starters, I've found A.R.E.'s paint-matching skills to be second to none. When I say this thing is the exact same color as the truck, I mean it.

So here's how this works. As you'll see in the pictures below, the truck no longer has the factory tailgate. That gets removed and then the entire back of the truck basically becomes a moving object like an SUV would have but with a little door in the middle you can craw in and out of. When you unlock the liftgate you simply apply a little pressure to pull it towards you and then the lift struts take over and lift it FAR above your head. Check out the quick vide below of it in action.

The truck also has lift-up doors on the side that reveal diamond plate toolboxes/shelves for storing even more stuff, but I'll show some pictures of that further down when I show the Overland Expo East photos.

I need to backtrack a little bit. About one week before I ended up getting the A.R.E. shell, I added the Auer Automotive chrome tailgate letter inserts to my tailgate (yes - just before I removed the tailgate to fit the shell ). They're also available in black!

    Week....Whatever

As August turned into September, and then September into October, I started losing track of when a lot of this stuff was applied to the truck, but I'll try and keep it order below.

I got a special, large delivery from my good friends at Air Design. If you're not familiar with Air Design, the company manufactures some of the most bad ass body kits on the planet and while much of it is geared towards cars like the Camaro and Mustang, a few years ago they started making products for the Tacoma, Tundra, Silverado, F-150, and Colorado/Canyon. The items for these trucks include door rocker panels, fender flares, hood scoops, tailgate applique panels, tailgate spoilers, front bumper covers with LED lighting, and interior hard-shell floor mats. For this truck, I opted to use their fender flares and door panels. I'm partial to the black-on-blue look, but the panels can easily be painted and you can find posts on this forum from individuals that have had them painted to match. Likewise, the fender flare in particular can be removed easily because of the SuperBolt system that holds them on and you can paint them, off the truck, even after they have been installed.

Overall, the complete set of flares is super easy to install if you take your time, measure like the instruction say, and have the truck nice and clean.

    Front-End LED Lighting

This truck came with the factory LED headlamps, so I didn't need to retrofit or buy an aftermarket set, which was good. It also came with the factory LED fog lamps, which I sold to someone on Facebook (I think). With the LED fog lamps out of the way, I moved forward with two new LED products out front.

The first, is the LED DRL system manufactured by my employer. If you live in the southeast states, you have likely seen these on a Tundra somewhere as we supply them to the Toyota port of entry in FL. What we manufacture is a replacement bezel for the body panel underneath the headlamp that integrates a 10-watt LED into a fixture that displays at full brightness during the day and then dims to about 10% when the headlamps turn on. These are available in factory colors 040 Super White, 1D6 Silver Sky Metallic, 1G3 Magnetic Gray Metallic, 202 Onyx Black, and what I had to use - unpainted.

So, the process began by taking the unpainted lamp's bezels to a local paint and body shop that we farm some work out to when we are too backed up. They sprayed the bezels with my paint code 8T0 and did an excellent job matching the color. Here's some photos of them installed and powered on:

They're a perfect match to the LED DRL feature in the factory headlamp in terms of color temperature.

Secondly, and a product I had mentioned before, I replaced the OE LED fog lamps with the Auer Automotive 2-in-1 set. During the day, the ring of LEDs illuminates inside the lamp housing. When you turn on your headlamps, that ring dims to about 10% power, and then you can use the included factory-style control switch to power on the fog lamps. When the fog lamps are on, the LED ring inside stays on too!

And here it is, all in one picture:

    Rostra Seat Heaters

While I'm rarely cold, my wife is ...like... ALL THE TIME. Because of that, and because they feel good on my weary back, I installed the 250-1870-TOY seat heaters from my employer in both front seats. Seat heaters are a pretty easy thing to install and I think an awesome upgrade to have. Paired with the lumbar support systems that we make, they'll have your back feeling real good. You'll notice in the pictures below that, yes, I did remove the USB port to make both front seat switches fit. I don't remember the last time I plugged into a USB port on a vehicle, even to charge, so it wasn't a tough decision for me. Somebody really should 3D print a new bezel for under the A/C controls that holds more switches.

Flowmaster Exhaust an Cold Air Intake

I really, really, really like the 5.7 engine. The power is great but, like better and worse men before me, I wanted more. For that reason, I started underneath the truck with a Flowmaster 717786 dual side-exit exhaust. The black powdercoated exhaust tips exit from underneath the truck in front of the passenger side rear tire and not only do they look great, but the sound of a cold start makes me all tingly.

The system is a complete cat-back bolt-on unit and to be honest frees up a lot of space under the bed by not exiting at the rear of the truck.

Flowmaster's CAI is also a great bolt-on option for a little extra HP and even gives that little whistle when the throttle is open wide :D

Sorry - One More Quick Backtrack

When we added the A.R.E. MX HD shell, we of course lost the factory backup camera option since it was integrated into the tailgate handle and the tailgate was removed altogether. I installed this myself, but one option you can get when ordering a shell from A.R.E. is one of our company's cameras with a custom interface harness that plugs in underneath the truck. Below is a picture of that camera, which mounts to any flat surface and most curved surfaces, and what it looks like on the screen. It's nearly 4 feet higher on the truck so it gives a nice birds-eye view (notice in the on-screen image it's above everyone's heads).

    DashCam Install

My employer offers a really neat dashcam system which saved my hide on my last truck where a driver side-swiped me and then tried to blame it on me. Boom - video evidence.

On the Tundra, we installed the actual camera high on the windshield along with the microphone and GPS antenna for route tracking, and then we placed the control module which houses the micro SD card in the glovebox. The system is compatible with Android and iOS devices so you can watch video on the side of the road in the instance where there has been an accident and then export the video to send to your insurance if needed. You can find more details about it here.

    GoPro/Action Camera Mount

You can kind of see this in the DashCam post above, but I designed an action camera mount that fits onto the lug that holds your rearview mirror to your windshield and works with pretty much any action camera on the market that uses that classic GoPro attachment design. I missed having the one on the windshield that the Tacoma comes with stock and you can see more details about it by clicking here.

Here's how it looks on an older Tacoma (same on a Tundra, really)

    DECKED Platform System

One of my favorite parts about this build so far has been increasing the usability and usefulness of the bed of the truck. One thing that amplified that towards the end of the build was installing the 2-drawer platform system that DECKED makes. It made transporting the tools and equipment I needed to pack in the truck to take to the SEMA Show more organized than ever, and likewise for what I brought to Overland Expo East the next weekend. My system has the dividers and a toolbox so everything can be stored neatly in its place broken up by category like food, tools, clothing, etc...

The DECKED system came with mounts that install into each of the bed's four corners. The system ships completely flat-packed and then goes together in two halves that then attached at the four corners. The weight of the platform, as well as these anchor points, hold it fast to the bed.

This is all fine and dandy, but where is the beer bottle opener mod? :D

    Onboard Air

I'll start this post by saying that the pieces I detail below have been removed from the truck. I took them off and put them on a military M101A2 trailer that I am building for camping.

That said, for onboard air, I went a weird direction and that's that I chose an air compressor system from Hornblasters. If you don't follow them on Instagram, check them out here for some samples of just how loud their horns are. But, wanting the maximum amount of air, I chose their 8 gallon Nightmare Edition horn kit which, as the name references, includes a huge 8 gallon air tank, a VIAIR 444C 200 psi dual compressor kit, four insanely loud train horns, and all of the electrical bits and air hoses to make everything work together.

For mounting the compressors, I wanted them out of the way but completely protected from the elements. If you can't tell from the pictures of the A.R.E. MX HD shell I posted above, the door kind of bulges outwards and includes a bit of a cavity between the door itself and the toolboxes inside the shell. I closed the door and held one of the compressors in place and it fit like a charm with about one finger's width of space in between the compressor and the shell itself. So it was full steam ahead mounting the compressor to the toolbox.

I held the compressor in place and aligned it to the box and used the layout of the treadplate design to make sure it was level. I then drilled my four holes and simply ran the bolts included with the compressors through the toolbox to hold them firm.

And I don't have a good picture of this, but I used a factory-style control switch from Cruiserheads 4x4 with an imprint of an air compressor to turn the compressors on and off. While the switch worked well, the blue backlighting that I chose was so far off from the OE backlighting color that I'm actually glad to have it out of my dashboard.
