I’m unsure how to detail new paint. I was planning on using a claybar and going from there. If there isn’t anything that needs correcting I was going to use Klasse All In One to get the paint clean and follow up with Wolfgang polymer sealant. If It looks like it needs some correcting work then a final polish before sealant. I was told to use iron x as a first step but unsure if that’s necessary. Any suggestions of what I should or shouldn’t do. I’ve done a lot on older paint but not brand new vehicles. Don’t want to do something I’ll regret. Thanks.

Iron decontamination is a good idea, even if it's a new vehicle. You will be surprised at what runs off your truck.

That seems to be the advice I’m getting. Also considering using Pinnacle jeweling wax for a good cleaning. Can you skip the claybar with iron x or still a must?

I would definitely use IronX and then clay, not a bar though, get a nanoskin mitt. If you have ever used a clay bar, you'll thank me once you try the nanoskin.

I’ve used clay and dropped it on the garage floor more than once. Probably will try the nanoskin this time. Thanks.

When i use a clay bar i put it in the middle of a damp chamois. This way you dont have to spray detail spray and you wont drop it either. I can clay my vehicle in 10 min.

I have a Porter Cable DA. I used to apply wax and sealants by hand with my little F150 but the Tundra is too big to waste time like that. A regular cab stepside looks small compared to a double cab.

Good tip. You can get some type of holder for the bars too. I think I’ve seen them sold together.

If i were you ...i would start with a light polish. For example , I use meguiars 205. Then examine to see if you need to actually correct the paint. My $.02

That’s why I was thinking Klasse AIO since it has no abrasives but cleans well. That’s if there is nothing to correct. Otherwise I have Griots final polish if it needs it. I don’t want to be using something as abrasive as a swirl remover on a new truck but this is my first black vehicle. I don’t know what it’s going to take to keep the paint looking good other than staying out of the car wash. I stick to Optimum no rinse as often as possible.

I would seriously look into a ceramic coating and/or some paint protection film. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable as far as detailing goes. You could ceramic coat your own truck for a couple hundred bucks, the sooner the better, especially with black

    Thanks for the plug, Monet!

@soobaroo this is what has gotten me the best results on my black Tundra. The only thing that has made it look better is a really expensive wax that I wouldn’t recommend due to price and lack of durability. There’s a shopping list in there somewhere.

Like @Pudge said, ceramic coating is a great idea, though time consuming, and possibly expensive. To be completely honest, if I’d paid full price for it, I’d be disappointed. Though it lasts longer, I really don’t think it looks better than anything else I’ve done to it. The true benefit was the paint correction.

You’re referring to Beadmaker? I watched a couple of videos about it and it looks interesting. I like that you can put it over wax or sealants if I understood correctly. Looks like a good way to extend the life of whatever else you use plus it looks good. It’s on my must try list.

That's what I use on my black Avalon and my Tundra. Porter Cable. Also use Pinnacle products!

I've always been afraid of burning through the paint with a orbital.

The Porter Cable will stop spinning with just a little too much pressure. You’d have to try really hard to damage your paint with one. A rotary is a different story, better know what you are doing.

I’m going to try Blackfire One Step to get it clean and then top that with Pinnacle Sovereign liquid.

The Porter Cable is AWESOME!!! I'd have to use sandpaper on my pad to scratch or burn the paint.

For someone new to machine polishing, make sure the orbital you choose is free spinning, like the Porter Cable or the Griots Garage 6" DA. Flex, on the other hand, makes a forced rotation orbital, which is more like a rotary.
