As the title states, I'm needing to get a new ac unit due to our 8.5 year old Trane's evaporator coil leak. I don't trust some of the local AC companies, just wondering if any forum members out there in Phoenix happen to be HVAC installers.

Not sure he even works on your side of town but a great guy I've known for awhile David Flores has his own company now Biltmore Mechanical. I'd get a quote from him if nothing else. 602 885 7328. Always was fair and honest exhibits pride in workmanship. His previous employer was Sterling Services 480-988-0958 and I also had great experience with them, they're family owned smaller outfit but they dont try to upsell you with a lot of high pressure BS. Recommend you get quotes from several places and see how your gut feels about the folks doing the work.

Thanks for the info! I'll give him a call. We've got some time as the ac still cools the house down, but I want to get it replaced before the heat comes.

I’ve been in HVAC for 26 years and install American standard equipment which owns Trane and which is the same. Most of all them including the coil’s have a 10 year warranty on that so hopefully the company check the warranty on the evaporator coil some of them did only have five year warranty make sure they check that before you go have an anything replaced first. Just a heads up and maybe they already have checked on the warranty for you just want to throw that out there. I live in Kentucky I can’t help you out much here other than give you that information best of luck to you though.

Yeah, we've had a few techs come out over the past year and a half and not one has mentioned the possibility of it being warrantied. A coworkers husband just told me last week he thought there was a 10 year warranty on Trane's coils (he does home inspections for a living). I looked online and if you registered the unit when it was purchased there is a 10 year warranty. I pulled my serial number and confirmed online that I did register it and the coil does have a 10 year warranty however.....I called the ac company out that originally installed the unit. I told him the coil is leaking and it should be covered under warranty (I printed a copy of the warranty from Trane's website). The problem is that the warranty covers the "Outdoor Coil" for 10 years. It's my "Indoor Coil" that's leaking which is not covered. He said they also go by "condenser coil" and "evaporator coil" He told me the evaporator coil is the "indoor coil" and is unfortunately not covered. So with a $3300 estimate to replace the coil it's probably time to just replace the unit.

I'd think a Trane unit should last for a good bit more than 10 years? Is replacing the entire unit really cost effective? How much are we talking for an entire unit replacement 7 or 8 grand? You could pay less than that and probably get another 5 or 6 years out of your system? I've got a 4 ton Lennox on one side of my house that's going on 14 years and still works great. Probably cost the previous home owner a hell of a lot less than the 1.5 ton Trane unit on the other side of my house.

Our current system is a Trane 4 Ton 14 Seer Package Heat Pump. We had this installed in November of 2010 and paid about $5800 after tax, even got a tax rebate from SRP on top of that. The unit was replaced from that freak hail storm we had back then, it totaled our AC unit along with my wife's Armada, our travel trailer and some home damage. I agree a Trane unit should last longer. It started giving us trouble within the past 2 years. Our warranty at this point is only covering the condenser coil and compressor for another 1.5 years. With all the money we've dumped into it lately I can't stomach another $3300 for a coil replacement. I'd feel better spending $6K and just getting a whole new system with fresh warranty.

I would totally do that, but I don't have Facebook and don't really want to join that. I've met a few AZ Tundra members here and there and they were all great guys. Even bought my TRD Pro Shocks from one of them. I just thought I'd try reaching out on here before I try calling around to get estimates from random companies.

I figured a 4 ton Trane unit is going to cost 8 grand or more these days

Quite possible with inflation. If so, I might have to rethink my strategy.

Not sure what it would cost out here. Only way to find out is to get a few quotes. Trane commands a higher price tag "brand name"...the TRD Pro of AC units? LOL
