Correct, the dsr1 decodes the headunit signal and is also a sound processor. It has RCA outputs that connect to an aftermarket amp

Have you added any amps or speakers yet? I do not believe you can use the factory amp with the dsr1.
Fyi - I ordered everything from James at tech12volts, super easy and top notch customer service and great pricing

Start with speakers and add sound deadener if you want, I would recommend.
I am note sure if the speaker group buy that @Pudge put together is still running or not.

Several members jumped on the speaker deal and are running them with the factory amp.

Hmm. Yea. I’ve been doing all kinds of research on what I need to do but I guess I need to let the pros handle all the r&d.

I researched for a while, went to and listened to a $2k package by one company. After lack of communication back from the company over a weeks time, I messaged Tech12volts on a Sunday afternoon, a few back and forth emails over 30 minutes I had ordered everything I needed. I gave James a budget I wanted to stay in and info on how I wanted it to sound, i would say he nailed it. It was as smooth as ordering an exhaust from Keith at Dirty Deeds.
I as a customer had a say in what I wanted the sound to be and I was recommended a few options. I appreciate that James builds his sub boxes here in the USA as well.

Anybody got anymore screenshots as to how to program the DSR1? The previous ones were perfect but I'd like to see if anybody has any more input.

What do you gain by installing the sound deadener on the doors?

My friend has this installed and it's an absolute must once you install an amp and new sub/speakers. That's my next buy.

I noticed a massive increase in sound quality just by using one box of NOICO 80mil sound dampener. I used it on my doors, some spots on the floor, the rear wall and the frame inbetween the front and rear door. I still have two pieces left to add to my roof when I get a free weekend. I applied more to my front doors than the rears and I'm really happy with the results. The road noise doesnt appear to be as bad.

Im thinking in the Fall that I am going to add some MLV (mass loaded vinyl) and CCF (closed cell foam) to the entire floor. That will be it for sound deadening for me. I think.

@phogallen do you have any screen shots of the settings used on the dsr1? Particularly the one for what speaker layout used (screen with car and speaker placement).

Thanks, I have the same setup and wanting to change to the dsr1.

Do your new dash speakers run off the HU or the JL amp?

    Thanks!

I've heard from some SQ guys that it is best to set time alignment first. Then set EQ to flat and play pink noise. Play the pink noise at your normal listing level (it's probably going to be really loud). Try and have the RTA in your listing position. Remember to try and only cut the peak frequencies and not boost any if you don't have to. When I first tried it, I time aligned last and it sounded flat like an AM radio. But once I time aligned first and then EQ'd out some of the peaks, all sounds really good now. One thing that helped me was to run all new speaker wire. I think the factory wire, with all the molex connections and small gauge, was causing some phase shift.. Or it just couldn't handle the 100+ RMS I am sending to my mids and tweeters. I couldn't ever seem to get a solid center image on vocals. They would just be sort of all over the place, but now the vocals are dead center. Hope this helps.

I currently have the ReCurve (********* setup) in my CM (1794 w/JBL). Kept the HU and the stock amp. Sounds good, except it's really lacking mids. I've done the sound deadening all over, except the roof.
Those of you with the DSR1, would you say if I replaced the Recurve with the DSR1 would help me to get more mids? Or, would I be better off getting a new head unit?

Lacking mid range (vocals) or mid bass? What speakers are you using? I am not sure how many watts the stock amp outputs, but most are usually only 20-30 watts. The best way to diagnose is to use an RTA (you can download app to your phone). Play pink noise through the system and see what sort of response you are getting. You likely have peaks and valleys that need to be adjusted.

I've installed the Tundra TT65CS Front Door and Rear door component with the TXD8005 5 CHANNEL AMP *********) and 12" sub w/ box.
Sounds great, except not enough mids for my liking. I "think" each component set is receiving 75w and the sub is getting 100w.
I'll definitely look into your suggestion, RTA. I tuned the amp and Recurve based on their videos. I was contemplating taking it in and getting it professionally tuned.

Maybe my question can be answered here if it’s not the right thread please point me in the right direction. I have 2016 tundra limited with JBL. I want to upgrade everything behind the hu, but I want to do it in stages. My question is. Will the DSR 1 work as a stand-alone unit meaning regular functions of everything with just the DSR1 no amplifiers no speaker upgrades . And of course at a later date upgrade amplifiers speakers sub? I am having a hard time finding answers to this question. Someone please help.

The DSR1 is just a sound processor, it will not provide any signal to the speakers.
here is a simple signal diagram if keeping the JBL head unit
    head unit -> DSR1 -> amp(s) -> speakers

Ok thanks that answered my question completely thank you. I know it is not an amplifier but I thought that it would be a replacement for the amp with a plug in to the speakers that could be swapped for a separate plug with rca jacks but it is crystal clear now. It’s sounding more and more like my option to upgrade the sound quality can be done in stages as far as the purchasing, but as far as installation it’s all or none. Thanks for the info.

    Random thoughts !

I had to read your post twice because I originally missed the part where you said you had the recurve, then I really chuckled at the fact I also missed the part where you kept the factory amp.
BTW - Im laughing at myself, NOT YOU ! - Guess I wasnt paying attention TWICE...

Maybe others will shed more knowledge on this, but isnt the problem you are experiencing caused by the factory amp? I considered that kit you have but ended up going a different route when I did mine.
The recurve has a built in DSP and "they" provide tuning instructions. Have you tuned according to those instruction? and, what about getting the matching PNP AMP and harnesses and get rid of the factory amp?
You already have over half of "their" system, why not finish it off and see where you are, before introducing another brand into your current setup?

Those with way more experience than I - please correct me if Im wrong - But isnt the amp the major source of contention in our trucks regardless of JBL or Non-JBL?

Disclaimer - I'm not an expert and open to all ideas but here are some thoughts.

    1. I have Hertz K170's in the doors and a JBL Club WS1000 all hooked up to am Infinity Kappa 5 amp. I set the four K170's to the high pass filter and set the x-over (it's set at 12dB/Oct) at about 110Hz - this is double the lowest frequency range of 55Hz for the K170's. The sub is then set to low pass filter and the x-over is at about 100Hz. The idea is at 12dB/oct the rolloff for sub and K170's will overlap just enough to give a flat response in 100-110Hz range.

    2. The biggest improvement in my midbass was after properly adjusting the gains to the K170's. I used an SMD DD-1 distortion detector which allows you to find the exact point where the amp starts to produce distortion and then you back off a little - allows you to get the most out of the amp. Adjusting the gains has much more effect on their lower frequency output than there higher frequency output. In other words the midbass got significantly louder with the gain increased than the highs. Makes sense as I believe it requires a lot more wattage to move a woofer than a tweeter.
