Anyone have a a home security camera system? Any advice on the matter? I have been having some issues with the neighbors and think it would be a good idea to install some cameras.

Here are the specifications I am looking for:

    - 8: 4mp+ IP66+ cameras
    - NVR: 16 channel, PoE
    - Alerting: Android App, Email
    - Video retention being 5 days or more

So I am wanting to run a PoE (Cabled Power over Ethernet). I am obviously looking for the best quality images (night and day) for the price range of under $700.

I have it narrowed down to these options so far:

Installed my Ring Tower Cam. (battery). Installation and setup is easy. Requires a $3 or $10 a month subscription to view and share videos. I would just do the $10 a month, you get more options and extend warranty. You also get unlimited add-ons. The 1 thing you can't do is adjust the volume of the speaker, which makes no sense. Just call customer service and they will increase to max, which you will want. I was able to talk to customer service this morning, on a Sunday, cant beat that. This is a budget friendly nice setup for money.

I have the Arlo pro. No complaints on the system. I get about 2 months out of the batteries, even in the New England cold, before having to recharge. No wires which was a plus. They retain video for 7 days, but you can download and save any videos you need to keep.

I have a few complaints about Arlo but the system works pretty good. I suggest a battery backup for it and your internet hardware. That way if someone thinks they can come around when the power is out, you will know.

I have a 15,000 watt natural gas generator wired to the house. 30 second interruption during a power outage, so I didn’t consider that

I went with Nest and have been really happy with it. The resolution and alerting is good.

My neighbor uses Nest and really seems to like it. I considered wireless but opted for a wired (POE) setup as it is significantly more reliable and less troublesome.

I went with this setup: https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance...EOLINK&rnid=2528832011&rps=1&s=gateway&sr=8-3

It took me 11 hours to install last Saturday, as I had to complete the entire installation myself with no assistance. I ran the Ethernet cables throughout the attic and down to my safe (Where I am locking the NVR). My house has high ceilings so I had to crawl around on the rafters all day, that was brutal. Nevertheless, I completed the job in full.

The only issues I have run into with this system is the motion alerting, I can't seem to eliminate false alerts, still working on it though. I have played with the sensitivity at different times of the day and set the motion zones, as well as a schedule, so that it only goes off when I am not there.

Here is a breakdown of my line-based review (Out of 10)

    Overall Satisfaction:8
    Build Quality:10
    Camera Quality:8
    Storage Retention:8
    Ease of installation:8
    Ease of Configuration:9
    Motion alerting: 5.5
    Night vision:8
    Video Playback: 7
    Value for money:8

    Would I recommend: Yes

having installed over 10 wired camera systems and all the frustration that they entail. I wouldnt go that route again.
yes, i agree with the logic, its hard wired, you have the harddrive on premises. thats about the only wins i see for those types of systems.

i've since given Ring a try and would never go back to a regular wired system. does it have its drawbacks? well.. idk. so far all i see are the positives.
it was stupid easy to install. stupid easy to set up and i can watch the damn thing on my phone.
the other systems were stupid hard to install, required crawling through the attic, drilling holes, running wires to a back closet, running network, setting up network settings, setting up the mobile app, the mobile app never worked flawlessly. the systems inevitably over a few years would crash of lock up and you'd only find out when you wanted to go back and preview something.

ring costs quite a bit, but their optics are bad ass, simple to install and i'm just over doing stuff the hard way.

so far i have ring cameras at my house and at my store. along with the ring alarm system at the store. soo nice just using my app to see the store and activate or deactivate the alarm.

Bump. We are getting ready to move and I want to upgrade to a better system. (Zmodo PoE system is staying with the old house) Leaning towards Arlo2 as new house has cathedral ceiling in the middle so probably be really tough to run wires.
    Any other opinions?

I read a couple reviews on the Arlos saying their battery life wasn't very good. That's what steered me towards wired cameras. But with your architecture in the way you may have to deal with that from any wireless brand

I was pondering this topic for a while. Had ring and one cam at my old house. Decided to switch it up for my new house with Google Nest. Have two outdoor cams and the hello doorbell. Quality of video is great. The main reason for the switch was it records everything all the time. Ring doesn’t do that and misses things like it might catch the guy walking by the truck but not breaking in. With the doorbell you can add names to faces so it recognizes people. The outdoor cam knows the difference between random sounds and a dogs bark and random movement vs person.
Con with the cams is they need to be plugged in. No battery option.

For those that have the wired Ring or Nest camera's, how big of a hole needs to be drilled to run the wire through a wall? Does it need to be big enough to run a standard plug through, or is there a smaller connection/plug that plugs into the camera itself?

The wired spotlight cam needs a hole big enough for the plug.

For the Nest outdoor camera the power cable splits in two with a smaller connection that you could get away with a smaller hole (probably similar to running Coax cable).

I fortunately had an outdoor outlet that I plugged mine into. I love it - Nest App and service has been great. Catch my a$$hole neighbors being a$$holes a lot.

You wouldn’t believe the times having video has helped....They called the cops on us about our dogs barking and once I showed the cop the video that my dogs weren’t barking when they said they were... paid for itself there.

I’m going back and forth between Ring and Nest, however I don’t want to be drilling plug size holes for the wire. Have you found the video quality to be good with Nest and which cams do you have? I see there is now an “IQ” cam with apparently better zoom.

we've got ring cams, the flood light version. i used them to replace the floods that were already on the back of the house so the wiring was already there. do you have any floods or anything else installed on the outside of the house that you could replace?

I’ve got the Outdoor Cam... video quality is excellent. Night vision is great too. Sound quality is good.

The Nest service is awesome - really haven’t had any issues. I have the 5 day service so I can go back 5 days and save video offline. Really like it.
