What’s with the passenger car tires that come with the new TRD pro’s. I bought a 2019 tundra pro and went directly to tire shop. I don’t get it. Must be fuel mileage thing or something. Really Toyota ya make a deadly truck then put those lame ass tires on it.How does a truck be able to be sold with car tires. Just saying!!Ohh and yes I am a Toyota fan.

They're really nice tires for the highway :anonymous:

Funny enough you can get KO2s on the TSS package

Yes I get that dude. But passenger tires for a off-road truck. That’s why they have TRD OFF ROAD. lol. I’d say put aggressive tires on it from the factory. If you want a car then buy one. Bahahahahhaha!!!

While I agree they are a little wimpy there are AT tires. You should have tried to negotiate new tires as part of your deal.

I bought the TSS simply because it had the KO2s. I did not want the 20s but the tires sold me. I had worked a deal with a dealer on a TRD OR when they totally pissed me off. In the end I am glad they did. I started looking at other trucks when I noticed all of the TSS's with KO2s. So after some research I found out that the OR TSS has the KO2s. I guess the dealer that I was working with on the TRD heard me complaining more about 20" wheels on a 4X4 than he did street tires on a 4X4 OR because he never even mentioned the TSS.

Toyota knows that 90% of their buyers don’t even know what you’re talking about

I went straight to tire store as well

Eh I may not be the most hard-core off-road dude ever but I’ve taken my truck into some nasty places. The tires have performed well for me. I make sure to air down to help me avoid punctures and so far they have tackled everything I’ve put in front of them. Most people upgrade the tires right away anyways to a larger size.

This. OP, have what terrain have you not been able to tackle with the OEM tire? How did it let you down?

I went to several tire shops today. Best price on BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 was $254.00 a tire. That's in a 255/70/R18. I don't intend on lifting my truck nor do I intend on getting after market rims. That is the stock tire size that my truck calls for. I have had good luck with the plain T/A getting over 90k miles out of them. That's was alot of playing with air pressure. I wound up with 28 psi in the front and 24 in the rear (on a gmc 2500) Tire would heat evenly across the entire width of the tread. Awesome snow tire, and had fun off roading some too.

As soon as I get back to work for a while there will be a set of t/a sneakers on the Falcon

Most people just “want” a bigger and more aggressive tire.

Most people don’t “need” a bigger and more aggressive tire.

Manufacturers need to make sure they meet mpg guidelines thus the tires will be less aggressive, and the tires that come on the truck will take “most” people wherever they need to go!

I will say that these tires are sooo much better than the stock tires on my wife's Armada. I believe her's came with the Continental ContiTrac tires. They wear uneven, have a lot more road noise and are not lasting anywhere close to the mileage on my stock Tundra tires. She's got 28K miles and the tires look like crap. I'm at 38K on the Tundra and can probably make it to 60K on them. I know they are not great off-roading tires, but there are much worse out there.

EPA fuel economy ratings. Pretty much all 1/2 ton trucks come with P Metric craptastic tires.

These tires are rated for your truck. Anything more is overkill. Now here is the catch 22. If you want a LT tire, if I remember correctly, there’s about 3 options for a load range C tire. Everything else is a LR E, which pretty much sucks.

I bought a Certified Tundra 1794 with the Sim Chrome wheels on it and it came with the WORST passenger tires on it... I negotiated for new set of A/T tires and got them ( 20") and promptly drove to local tire ship, exchanged for 18" and never looked back.

I did a 6 day sales trip wit the 20's on it... and the rolling in the curves was so bad I was tempted to just buy new tires from a shop while on the road trip
I'm MUCH happier with the 18's

The stock tires are a joke. Got about 30K out of them. Weren't good for much on or off road. I have done Revos and Toyos on different trucks. My last set of ATs that I still have on my are General GRabber AT2s. Cheaper than the other brand names but feels like they do everything just as well. Also the ride quality got better when I got rid of the passenger car tires so it's not like you can say Toyota does that to give a cushy ride. Once I stopped forcing both the tires and the wheels to do the same job and just got a stiffer side wall tire that put all the work on the suspension my truck rides much smoother. I think the P rated tires that come factory are just the cheapest thing for Toyota to do.

Airing down helps avoid punctures? Never heard that one. Airing down help with floatation on soft surfaces like sand and mud. Probably sand more that anything. Are you really going to float a 6000 lb truck. If anything airing down exposes your sidewalls to more punctures. Deep sand is the only place I would do it.

Airing down increases contact patch in sand. Hard tires in sand become like pizza cutters. I can attest to this because I’ve personally driven in a lot of sand. I’ve tried leaving them pumped up and the truck tends to dig in. Dropping down psi 100% increases flotation and maneuverability. Airing down on rocky terrain lets the tire absorb sharp rocks instead of putting all that pin point on one spot of the tread. It’s proven. Obviously you don’t want it to flat to where you are contacting the rim. Also it’s just easier on your suspension.

+1. Not a new technique on sand or over rocks. Proven effective and relatively safe for decades by countless off roaders.

@Stumpjumper Think of it this way, if you were going to physically try to stab a hole in the tire. What would be easier, a tire that gives when you try to pierce it, or a tire that’s hard as a rock pumped up?

I heard this explained once by a very experienced and accomplished offroad racer. He said to picture your standard run of the mill balloon pumped up to full. Set it on a bed of rocks. Now press down with your hand with some reasonable force, and roll it forward. How long until it pops?

Now take a second balloon and air it up only enough so that your hand doesn't hit the rocks when you press down with the same force as before. Now roll it over those same rocks. How long until it pops? Does it ever?

Lots of ohhhs and ahhhs and lightbulbs went on in the crowd.

That’s a great analogy. I was thinking of a balloon but couldn’t come up with a scenario where I could explain it that way. That’s perfect!

FWIW, I’ve off-roaded on a 3-diamond rated trail on P-rated AT tires in a 1st gen Tacoma before. The trail wasn’t strewn with jagged rocks, though, and a 1st gen Tacoma is admittedly much lighter than a Tundra. Ironically, the Jeep behind me with 35” MTs couldn’t make it up the same, steep, off-camber trail for some reason.

I wouldn’t take P-rated tires out on the Rubicon nor would I use them for heavy hauling and towing, though.

I understand airing down in sand for floatation. On the rocky ranch that I hunt airing down is just going to expose your sidewall to sharp rocks, cedar stumps and mesquites. No way would I air down in that terrain. Geometrics and construction of a tire and a balloon are not even close. By airing down in the rocks you are exposing more of the weaker part of the tire to the rocks. Also I am not desert racing and jumping my truck.

Definitely do what you think is best. But your concern simply isn't supported by evidence or experience.

OK. We will have to agree to disagree. Did you read those articles I posted? They give a pretty detailed explanation. Aired down is a lot different than a flat tire. You’re not riding on the side walls, you’re still on the tread. While it does balloon out and expose the side walls, the side walls will give against a rock instead of hold firm and pop them. I know I won’t hange your mind. So I won’t fight with you about it, definitely do what you feel is best. Even if its wrong :boink:

This is true, but only if you run nitrogen in the tires. :stirthepot::crapstorm: Just kidding, but in all seriousness, I agree with @15whtrd and the above about airing down.

A few months back I was at the dealership for 5k service and they had a new TRD pro Voodoo blue 4Runner getting cleaned up delivery. It had Nitto G2 Terra Grapplers on it. I wondered why Toyota would upgrade the 4Runners tires and not the Tundras.

I will. The balloon thing is just silly to me. A tire does does not expand and stretch like a balloon. As you fill a balloon it gets real thin. Apples and oranges
