You might be shocked to hear this but I was super unimpressed by my experience at a local Toyota dealership today...

We're looking at trading my wife's Rav4 in for a 4Runner. We had a kid recently and have two big dogs so room in the Rav is tight.

With a little searching, I find one online a few towns over listed at Toyota dealer that looked decent and was priced fairly. So, I set up an appointment for this afternoon (Monday) to come in and look over that particular 4Runner and to talk trade in numbers.

I happened to be in town on Sunday (yesterday) and took a slow roll through the lot to look at the used 4Runner I found online. It was not bad, it looked good and I was looking fwd. to a test drive.

Unfortunately, this morning, my wife had to take the Rav for the day today (last min change-up). I let the salesman I was dealing with know via email (long before business hours) that I would still be coming in, only I would not have the trade with me. Told him I would still be interested in looking at the 4Runner, test driving, and potentially putting some $ down to hold it if things check out, then come back with the trade on a day where the wife didn't need it.

I show up this afternoon at the dealership a bit early, so again, I roll through the lot and there is the 4Runner untouched and in the same exact place it was on Sunday. I know his because the ice was still frozen in puddles around all four tires - same as it was Sunday. I poked around the lot a bit, then headed into the dealership at the agreed upon time to meet.

Well, here is when the sleaze sets in...

After being directed to the salesman desk and waiting for 10 min for him to show up, he informs me that the 4Runner was "actually in the body shop and then getting detailed"... da fuq?

I played dumb and he said "if you interested in it, we should get the paperwork going so that it doesn't get sold out fromunder you" and "there has been a TON of interest and hits on it, there is actually a few other salesman working on deal with it now" which totally pissed me off... I do not like getting taken for a fool... Yet I still played dumb...

Next he went into a spiel regarding the other options for 4Runners on the lot, and "although they are more expensive, we can finance them so monthly payments are the same and you end up getting much more vehicle when you drive off the lot"... Ugh....

So I told him I'm not interested and for him to please give me a call when the 4Runner we were originally interested in comes out of the "body shop" and left...

On the way out, I drove my the 4Runner once again.

Lo and behold, not 10 mins after I left the lot, I get a call from the salesman say "OMG, you'll never believe it but the 4Runner just got back from the body shop and if you free I can show it to you!"...

    Yeah, no thanks bub...

Maybe I should give the benefit of the doubt to the salesman, but that seemed SUPER slimy and a waste of my time...

I have eliminated doing ANY business with them from here on out and I intend to get the word out that this is how they operate. I was even thinking about letting Toyota Corporate know this is how they operate.

I don't want to be a total dink on the internet, so feel free to PM me and I'll tell you the dealership so that you can avoid them if you in the market for a Toyota in Southern Maine area.

Now I'll hop off my shine box and move on...

    Thanks for entertaining my rant.

Dang! Well. I think you missed an opportunity not calling his bluff... getting up to walk out, then 4 strides away turning and saying, "um, actually...." But I can totally see the slime meter probably didn't make you want to even bother. Anyway, I hope you find a good deal elsewhere!

I'd email the manager or owner and tell them of your experience and see what they have to say.
