Co worker of mine just traded in his Tundra for a 17’ F250 platinum with 98k miles for $48,000. Whatever....his money. Lol.

Anyway. He’s had it for less than 2 months and it’s already in the shop for a $10,000 fuel system overhaul. Fuel pump grenaded inside the tank and sucked up all kinds of shit into the fuel lines and injectors.

Worst part is that this isn’t the first power stroke that had suffered from the same exact thing that I know of. Friend of mines F350 just had the same thing happen to his about a year ago.

I will say this..a few years back I picked up a pallet of tile and used his F150 (which being a lariat is a CM, with all the goodies). that pallet of tile weighed 2900 pounds according to the label attached to it, the F150 he had was rated at 1800lbs, and that sucker didn't even hit the bump stops and hauled it 50 miles like a champ.

Lol what are your standards for a “top notch modern vehicle”? A 80,000 truck that has a dozen recalls and sits in the service department most of the time? People buy Toyota’s because they are reliable not because they look like the inside of a space shuttle. Also most of your issues sound like they are with your local dealer not Toyota.

The truck does need an update. My dad and father in law are Ford F150 only guys. There is no comparison in the ride of the F150, its just simply better. On road, off road, half and half....

BUT, they have always had issues with their F150s. FIL has a serious fuel burn issue with his ECB, switched to a 5.0, hes had tech issues; HU, dash gauge cluster, sensors. My dads ECB gets top tier MPG, but he has had nearly 8k in warranty work done since he bought it.

    Want I want in the next gen tundra;
    1. a NEW GEN! not a sheet metal change.
    2. Box frame. doing away with the C frame will do a lot to address Tundra "short comings". Ride, bed bounce, payload...
    3. 5.7l on par with current class leading MPGs. Its Toyota, they can do it.
    4. Can Entune.
    5. REAL LSD/locking rear end

Thanks. That's a little too much of a road trip for me tho for seats. Gonna see if I can find someone a little closer to home.

I took an extended test drive in my buddy's 2013 F-150 5.0L from Virginia to Colorado. I was sure I wanted one and had been looking for a few years (just casually). I almost pulled the trigger on one but it thankfully sold before I could. I then told myself to consider a Tundra. Deep down I wanted a tundra but kept telling myself I'd get more truck for the money (more features and what not) with a F-150. Thankfully after searching around, I saw that used tundras were a little more than a "comparable" F-150 but that is what I really wanted. My Tacoma had been going strong these past 13 years so I also felt loyal to toyota. So I now own a tacoma and tundra and I'm glad I went ther tundra route. Hopefully she'll last me a long time!

I'm so glad someone else said it because I was thinking it in my head... The Ford grilles kill my soul (my own opinion -- I get that some may disagree). IDK if Toyota could design a more boring front grille than Ford, but I hope they don't try with their upcoming Tundra offerings.

The only two Ford grilles that don't look bad are the super duty's and the rap.... Nevermind, I don't want to take it there.

Also as alluded to above I believe, the front bench seat was nice/comfortable in my old '14 Tundra - had to search one out that had it. It's the thing I miss the most... Some people actually like the console shift, just sayin'.

Well I've said it on here before and I guess I'll say it again... This is the difference between 30 and 40 years old. I could really care less about a supercharged little engine with a 10 speed transmission that ends up giving you a whopping 3 mpg more. I could care less about a super fancy stereo that integrates with my phone and social media. Seats get worn and dirty. I am starting to feel like I'm the only one on here that uses a tundra for a truck. The ancient 5.7 doesn't drop cylinders or any other fancy bullshit. That's why I like it. KISS method. There is PLENTY of power in the 5.7. I don't haul 4000# in the bed. I use a trailer. What I do like is the fact that it is rock solid dependable and the re-sale on these trucks always blows my mind. I live in a rural area where the big three still dominate the dive bar circuit. I love to listen to the guys living in fear that the warranty is about to go out and I could never have afforded "those repairs" out of pocket along side the payment. My 2015 taco has been every bit as solid as my 2008 and I plan to take it to 250K before I sell it. I got $10,000 from the last one and sold it cheap to a buddy. You guys keep buying your fords and others. I will continue to saddle up my dinosaur and suffer the horrible boring life of a tundra owner.

I agree. As for Toyota's 5.7L V8 being dated, Chevy sold its venerable 350 V8 and Ford its 302 and 5.0 for decades. I didn't buy the Tundra for fuel efficiency. I bought it to haul and tow a trailer on occasion, take it on some mild trails and camping and hunting trips, and fit my two kids' car seats in the back since they wouldn't fit in my '03 1st Gen Tacoma. The Tacoma had 205K trouble free miles before I sold it. I would've kept it for another 205K miles if the car seats would've fit, but they don't. I, too, prefer simple but tough reliability and longevity over fancy electronic doo-dads and latest technical gizmos that may or may not break after a short period of time.

With my Tundra, I hope to get way more than the 205K miles I got on my Tacoma. My family and I tend to keep our vehicles for many years after they've been paid for. I intend to do the same with the Tundra if it holds up with regular maintenance like I hope it will.

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind new tech, I just want it to be reliable and long-lasting. I find the new electric cars to be interesting, too, and I hope the tech improves on them. But in the meantime, I'm happy with the "outdated" but reliable Tundra and its 5.7L. If the Big 3 can improve their quality and reliability to be on par with Toyota's, then I think that's great. Competition is good, and it'll force Toyota to work harder to improve reliability even more so. But for now, I don't think they're close, unfortunately.

A couple years ago, as I was trying to save for a new truck, I entertained getting a Ford. The ecoboost sounded interesting, and the trucks looked nice. I kept playing around on the Ford website, configuring a new truck. My 'trusty-rusty' Tundra was 14 and hadn't given a lick of problems. Not even a flat tire. About the worst I could say was that I hated the color, which was now starting to oxidize and really looked bad. Then at 15 the brake master cylinder and steering gearbox started leaking within months of each other. Well, look at that, something broke! So I started thinking, what was Ford's reliability like. Started reading on the internet. UH, I changed my mind, I don't want a Ford, maybe I should look at the new Tundra. Ok, they have been recycling the same truck for a while and it's a bit dated, but that doesn't bother me. I mean, I don't even have a USB port in my truck and it's not the end of the world. I am not expecting the interior off of a high end Mercedes, plastic is just fine and I am OK with cloth seats. The 5.7 has been around the block but so what. If I wanted fuel economy I would be looking at a Prius. Configured a couple at Toyota's site, came to seriously less money than the Fords that I had gone to town on. Kept it on the back burner for two more years before buying one. Things not happy with? I miss the small cargo area that was under the back seats on trusty-rusty, and I wish those rear seats folded down. I miss the second fold-down visor (I have sun sensitive eyes) and no ash tray? Where do people stow their candy wrappers . The side view mirrors are more 'in the way' of my view out the sides than the old truck as they sit higher and closer to me. Ok, if I go 17+ years with this truck (that's the plan) and this is the worst of the complaints I will be just fine. Beats having a truck that I have to share with the shop.

My wife has a TSX and the thing has been bulletproof. It is far and away the most reliable car either of has ever owned. We were looking at new Acura’s to replace it with in the next couple years as it’s long in the tooth now. Might I ask what Acura you’re having all the trouble with?

I test drove one of the new top of the line gmc trucks for the shit of it and the interior was complete garbage. The sheet of flimsy plastic they call a center console that bends and creaks when you press buttons that aren’t on the radio is ridiculous.

I agree that the newer f-150 (I hate even typing that damn word ) interiors are nice and comfortable but they did need to find a selling point somewhere cause it’s definitely not gonna sell on reliability. I look at the interior of it as a luxury mobile waiting area for when it breaks down

It’s a 2016 MDX. The first week we had it it was in the shop with all the lights on the dash on. Came home after being “fixed” and a week later had the same problem again. This time they had the car for 2 weeks. So the first 4 weeks owning it, we had it for one. Ever since day 1 we had transmission problems. Hard shifting, jerky motions, clunking into gears. If you google “Acura 9 speed problems.” They had tsbs for it, just pages and pages of issues. After stranding us on the side of the road twice, and having to be towed to the dealership, Acura finally agreed to replace the transmission (also they fought harder than I would expect a company like Honda to fight to NOT fix things, I finally had to talk to an attorney and send a form letter demanding lemon before they agreed to replace the tranny). 40k miles we have had a new transmission, 2 new front blowers, 1 new rear blower, new top half of engine, new gas tank, new steering wheel, new suspension since it wouldn’t align and hold it. At least I have a good dealership and with Acura I get a loaner, but we won’t be keeping it much past the warranty being up, and I won’t buy an Acura again.

    Not many yet, mostly stock.
Great experience on you seeing comparisons between the two trucks.

Creature comforts are essential at certain levels , I believe the older you get the more you want / need them.
They become factors in decisions about your tastes, style.
I came from F150 in 2016 and the Ford definitely has more items and build platforms. The 1794 / Platinums/ Pro platform are very stylish... I think. The maintenance schedule is quite a bit better on the Tundra than the Ford, especially down the road.
I hope you’re able to up grade to a new Tundra and make the same comparisons
If you can. Good luck which ever way .

Holy crap. Ours has been basically bullet proof. The door locks went out at 60k miles and a coil pack at 89k or so. Other than that it hasn’t even needed a lightbulb. I changed the pads when I did the coil pack because I figured it was time and they still had some life left in them. The lower control arm bushings need to be replaced at 95k but that’s just to be expected at 6 years and 95k pot hole ridden miles.

First of all, I really like my tundra but I’m going to play a little devils advocate here.

I had an 04 F150 lariat that took me to 200k; no sweat. If you’re slightly mechanically inclined, or more, owning a ford is no problem. I was in my 20s for the decade that I owned it and enjoyed spending the occasional weekend doing maintenance. Issues that you don’t get with a tundra but ford fans complain about really aren’t that bad if you keep on top of the message boards and take preventative measures. Examples: lower steering shaft binds, 2-piece spark plugs, fuel pump control module corroding. Grease the steering shaft occasionally, buy a borescope in case you break a plug into the cylinder, and mount the fuel control module so it can dry out. These are just a few examples. Overall, I’d say it was fun owning the ford. I learned a lot, was able to buy a ton of tools, and took pride in the truck.

Now I’m in my 30s and started a family so needed something with less time constraints. So Toyota it was. I turned in a 21 year old 97es300 running like a champ as part of my tundra purchase. Maybe someday I’ll go back to ford; time will tell.

Oh, and fords do ride much smooth.

    Just my $0.02

I have had fords ever since I was driving. Had a F250 the 7.3 best diesel I ever had then 6.4 then 6.7. Ford I feel like does not hold up for the price they want for them. I have had my Tundra 5 months and LOVE IT!! There are more bells and whistles on the fords. I missed my diesel but at 45,000 miles is should had to replace the front end 3 times due to death wobble and def and leaking.

Those diesels carry A LOT of weight over the front suspension and it eats the ball joints and bushings for breakfast.

My 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L DRANK oil due to the AFM
    (Active Fuel Management...V8 to V4).

GM replaced the engine with a brand new 5.3L crate engine at 90K miles in 2016....
IT drank oil! Fed up, in August 2018 I traded it in for the 2015 SR5 TRD that only had 19,700 miles....WHAT A FIND!
    This Tundra is solid!
    This Tundra has acceleration!
This Tundra does NOT drink oil!!!
Towed my '69 Camaro on a trailer last weekend to have some work done and the Tundra was a hoss!!!
The Tow/Haul button rocks! Definitely Beast Mode!!!
That Sierra would never had been able to tow that classic on the trailer without blowing the tranny.
    Long live my Tundra. :muscleflexing:

If I were a person who leases trucks, only then would I consider an F150.

I got to ride around in my uncles f150 last weekend. It rode really nice and is very comfortable, compared to my first gen its roomy as hell. I noticed his Nitto tires were going bald and alerted him to it, he said he knows and would replace then but hes trading in anyway. He said never keep a Ford for long. He has different cars every year so I'll take his word.
    :D
He lives in Mexico where you need a truck just to handle the rough roads (where you are lucky enough to find paved roads). He said hes going to replace his truck with a classic, he doesn't want all the electronics.

I honestly think the hatred towards Ford is overblown. The Cam Tower disaster is a good example that no one is perfect.
