Which one you guys prefer to protect door edges? OEM Toyota edge guards matched to exterior color or 3M film installed by professional?

    Thanks in advance.

OEM color matched guards would probably offer better protection.

I've got a brand new pair of OEM White edge guards for crewmax. took one out to dry fit it and figured i'd go with the 3m as it might be a little more forgiving if I were to hit the doors on something. So now I have this set that I'll be putting up for sale shortly.

Bought a thin strip of XPEL off Amazon. Blends in with the paint well and has enough protection for my needs. I'm not slamming my door open into walls

I like the color matched ones. They blend in and offer good protection.

I've had a color matched set since I got my 2018 a year ago. I've tried several times to get the blasted things on but so far completely unsuccessful (way too tight). Next, I'll take them to a body shop and see if they can do it.

More complicated that a rubber hammer?

I tried a rubber hammer, a wooden mallet, 16 oz ball peen cushioned by a towel, a length of 2x4 with a sock on it. I would get some part of it started but it would pop off as I worked down. I'm just not using the proper technique I guess.

I really like the looks of the color matched edge guards that came on mine. They blend right in and are apparently made out of stainless steel.

Why do I keep thinking that the only reason that someone would need door edge guards is because they are not paying attention when they are opening their door........???

The look on the faces of Prius drivers after they park next to my truck and bash their doors into my rock sliders........ in the back rows of the parking lot with plenty of other spaces to park in with no cars for like 4 spaces............lol.

Help me understand... It seems the film would be better because it's flexible and won't chip a color. The OEM color matched stainless guards are basically another edge that is painted that will scuff and dent. And after watching that video it looks like the original edge is scratched to hell in removal. I just don't understand...

It’s true. But I’m not worried as much when I open my door, it’s my passengers opening their doors.

I hate door edge guards because they are ugly. If any of my passengers don't respect my doors, and the cars that we park next to, then they are going to be informed. We will go in their car next time so they can learn how it feels to be disrespected. Fortunately, my friends and family already understand this on their own.

Ok. 3 on and one left. Sealant comes out too close to the edge on a door. I see instructions mentioning a tool but the tool doesn't show up on a search

Edit. Taped for a guide and used a razor knife to cut back the sealer.

For those who want to install these. They are a PITA. But they can be installed. The trick is that they are metal. So if you screw up a little on the alignment around the contours, you can pull it back and mash the groove back together so it will be snug on the next attempt. They require a great deal of patience. Also, use the alignment templates and follow the instructions for the top. The bottom is where it gets tricky and the instructions are not quite correct

But I'd make sure that the sealer is at least .100 in away from the edge, or you're in for a real treat.
