If I filled a cup full of water, I would say it has 100% of its capacity used up. So if Full Synthetic and 100% synthetic are not of equal properties, should it really be called “Not Quite Full Synthetic”?

Wrong. There never was such a thing as 100% PAO. It's not technically possible to make 100% PAO. You need certain percentage of non-PAO oils (mineral typically) mixed in to deliver the additive package. Even Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Redline are a blend. They have A LOT of PAO, but they are not 100%. In recent years, even they have lowered the amount of PAO in their oils. Mobil 1EP, AFE & AP, Amsoil's Top_tier line, Redline, and Royal Purple are all pretty close to being the same as far as PAO percentages, only their non-PAO oil and their additives differ.

The whole PAO is the best thing is long gone because the stats don't support it. The best overall synthetic oils are a percentage of PAO, blends, and additives all together.

The names "100% Synthetic" and "Full Synthetic" were determined by lawyers and judges, not by engineers and chemists. These "names" reflect nothing about the properties of the two types of motor oil. This occurred because Mobil Oil sued Castrol(?) for labeling highly refined mineral oil w/o PAO as "synthetic" and selling it cheaper than Mobil 1. Mobil LOST the suit. Google it up; fascinating story.

The funny thing with the mobil 1 lawsuit.

If I understand correctly, they sued castrol for mislabeling synthetic oil. They lost the lawsuit.

So they then DEgraded their own product as a result of the Lawsuit? Great strategy

    Yup.

If they were so passionate, they should have just created a new class/label of oil to describe their own. Amazing

Kind of makes me feel a little less fuzzy about Mobil 1. I might actually research and consider an alternative........

Remember that this all happened back in the nineties. Possibly all the Mobil 1 you've bought for your vehicles has been the same revised formula. Have you seen any reduction in lubrication superiority? :D

As a former user of Mobil's industrial lubricants, their technical service and support for their products is without peer. They make lubricants as good as anybody's and better than most. All that stuff in the nineties was about Castrol's attempts to steal market share by lying, Mobil adjusting to meet the successful competition, and still providing a superior product. No worries. ;)

Always run synthetic in my Land Cruiser, 4runner, Tundra and motorcycles. Take apart an engine run on dino and do the same with an engine run on synthetic, less wear and tear on the metal parts and much cleaner internally.

Run Mobil 1 when on sale or NAPA synthetic as it's rebranded Valvoline synthetic at almost half the price of Mobil 1. Synthetics "might" get us another mile or two per gallon.

if i were redlining my engine constantly I would be more concerned with which synthetic i buy.

Ive tried mobil, valvoline, castrol, amsoil. I can’t tell a difference because i only drive 10k miles a year so i do oil changes every 6 months

Yes, the Toyota 0W-20 is synthetic.

Mobil 1 is fine. These engines are pretty easy on oil, and any major brand will work well in it.
