Crap , well I guess I gambled for 60Thousand miles . I did see one tooth ( if I can call it that ) on the belt that was sorta frayed .

Just finished belt and waterpump install , had work related stuff and parts holding me up. Started up smooth , no lights no grinding HA . Gotta say not too impressed with gates brand tensioner, pulley had a little play , took pulley off and it was in bearing. Old one was tight and smooth. Also the washer between the bolt and bearing was really flimsy , not thick like the factory but they wont interchange. Tension was a bit more than old one so I went with it. Over all if I worked strait through would have been probably 7 to 8 hours maybe.

I think fischerja just answered any and all questions about the 4.7 being an interference engine!!! A friend's Lexus 470 broke the timing belt at parking lot speeds with zero damage; i can now verify to him how lucky he was.

Need to do the timing belt job on my 2004 Tundra. Any advice on parts brand? Toyota wants 2.5 times what some of the kits cost. Unsure about buying Dayco, etc.

Go to toyota parts dot com. Enter your VIN# and they will ship the OEM parts to your door for way less than stealerships.

Not the place to skimp IMO, given the labor involved in a timing belt replacement, and its importance. Pay whatever it costs and buy the OEM Toyota parts, my .02. chunk.

Mine has 320...belt replaced at 310....I need to find the pics....but it was cracked to hell and back...a crack at every tooth. I don't know how the hell it was holding together. It must have been the original belt.

Im in the middle of doing mine right now. Just bought the truck about a month ago didn't see any records of it being changed. Truck had 132k on it. Pulled it apart and yup original Toyota belt. I would assume that it is original. About to get back out in the driveway as soon as it gets lighter outside.

Honestly it looked great. I watched kaling somewhere that typically the color of the numbers and lettering on the belt itself typically wears away around 50k to 60k. If this is true mine was well over that. There wasnt any coloring left to the belt. Other than that, it was dry(no oil or coolant), not cracked what so ever, and everything looked intact. Even all the components to the timing belt looked to be in great order. I'll see if I still have the belt. I'll take a picture of it. Although I'm quite positive it got thrown out.

I just ordered the same kit, plus OEM thermostat and gasket from Amazon yesterday, and a belt drive component kit from RockAuto. At 127,000 miles, I was getting a little nervous thinking the sky is falling. Hope to install it by mid-month.

I think the tensioner loosening is more of a concern then the belt breaking. That's what causes trucks to "jump" timing.

Both times I replaced the belt on my 2006, they were almost indistinguishable from new. I had to be careful where I set it down on my workbench, I didn't want to accidentally put the old one back in. Both done at around 100,000 miles.

Aisin/OEM parts needed will run about $250-$300.

I also recommend getting the aisin (FIPG) or something like optimum gray for around the square water pump inlet/outlet.

find a good pro independent mechanic and labor should be between $300-$500.

I wouldn’t mess with the crankshaft seal or camshaft seals unless they are leaking.

And that Aisin FIPG is what?

Done. I house sit and took care of my neighbor's dogs for eight days while he went on his honeymoon to Mexico. In repayment he is going to HELP ME do the install. He is a professional mechanic and has done a couple timing belt replacements. I will be doing the work with him assisting and advising. It is at his advice that I am replacing the belt components I ordered from RockAuto, along with the two major radiator hoses. He wants me to do it right the first time, and I like his suggestion enough to spring for the parts.

FIPG stands for “formed in place gasket” the Aisin kit I got did not have a gasket for the square hole on the water pump. Instead there was a note inside suggesting aisin FIPG.

This is a list of the parts I got when I had my timing belt job done:

    Timing Belt
    Timing Belt Tensioner Bearing
    Timing Belt Idler Bearing
    Timing Belt Tensioner
    Water Pump
    Water Pump Gaskets and Seals
    Thermostat
    Thermostat O'Ring
    Serpentine belt
    Aisin FIPG

2-3 Gallons of pre mixed anti freeze with zerex (I like valvoline)
