If your coming to Colorado make certain to bring some warm clothes if you are thinking about RMNP or possibly Pikes Peak. Even in the summer it can get cold and nasty at elevation quickly. Rent an all wheel drive SUV and drive to the top of Pikes Peak. Every time I have friends in town for the first time I take them to the Peak and let them drive my car up. It kinda freaks them out. Do some fly fishing on the South Platte or just drive through the canyons and admire the beauty. You will love it here.

While I realize Hawaii is in the US we want to visit a state we have yet to see. As for visiting gators in CO that is out. I spent 25 years in South FL and had to cross many a canal with my K9 partner I hate those f*****s. We have the book 1000 Places to See Before You Die, it was one of my retirement gifts from a friend on the force. When we travel we check the book to see what is of interest. It states that RMNP is better seen in the off season and is extremely crowded in the summer, so the San Juans might be a better choice. The SW corner really interests us, but it is less than half the cost to fly to Denver and drive from there. so I think this may be the route that we take as driving is not a problem and we really enjoy cruising through parts we have never seen. While seven days is not enough time to see everything, I think we can enjoy our time there.

I am from Texas, I love Texas... but you don’t want to be here in July. Colorado is where it’s at.

from the denver airport, you can get to telluride in 8-9 hours on the scenic route. forget I70. 285 down to salida. onto 50, up and over monarch, into gunnison, around curecanti national rec area and into montrose. onto 550 over to telluride or ouray. you could even make a side trip into black canyon before getting montrose.

In fact, avoid any National or State Park on the 4th. Worst day of the year to be at one

My daughter and I made this trek Aug 2016. It was amazing. Flew in to Denver, rented an SUV.
12-day, 3,400 mile road trip from Denver to Grand Canyon & back. Absolutely phenomenal. We saw so much. It WAS an ambitious trip, but of course you can trim it down & stay an extra day anywhere. We ended up staying an extra day in two diff locations just because we needed a break from the road. (Or you can just take a look at the itinerary to get ideas on one single place to go.)

    Highlights of the trip:
    - Black Canyon of the Gunnison Nat Park the “painted” sheer granite walls of the canyon were incredible
    - Mesa Verde Nat Park (eat at the park’s restaurant & get the rattlesnake/pheasant sausage & the elk Wellington- great stuff)
    - Rocky Mountain Nat Park
    - Grand Canyon North Rim. (Liked it more than south rim - much less people)
    - Four Corners monument - quick stop but still pretty cool - in 4 states at once
    - Monument Drive
    - Hanging Lake (in CO somewhere, don’t remember)
