I’m taking a road trip with my wife and son. My son is almost 2. Driving from CO to Kingsland, TX. Going to meet the in-laws for a vacation. Any suggestions on where to eat? What local beers to drink? Anything that is a must do or see while we are passing through?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. We don’t have very many good bbq places in CO. I have only found a couple.

You can do a barbecue tour here...try Opies on TX71 (about ten miles past US281 heading east toward Austin). And, don't you dare pass up the butterbeans, they're a "must try".

Opie's is closer to Kingsland than Llano, but Cooper's and Franklin's are institutions in Texas. In Austin, might want to get to Franklin's early.

Edit: Oh yeah, there's only one "local" beer in Texas...Shiner. Well, you can probably find some "micro" brews in Austin.

We might just have to do the bbq tour. I’ll look up Opie’s. Thanks.

    Who'da thunk it...http://opiesbarbecue.com/

Even barbecue joints have to online savvy these days. From their map, I erred...either Opies or Cooper's about equidistant from Kingsland.

Isn’t Lone Star a TX local brew?

Northwest of Austin about...mmmm, 50-60 miles.

"Kingsland is located at 30°40′02″N 98°26′41″W (30.667102, -98.444627).[3] The town is at the confluence of the Colorado and the Llano rivers, which combine to form Lake Lyndon B. Johnson."

Oh...I thought he said local "beers". :D Actually, Shiner is well known among beer drinkers in many states, mostly those that have been here and tried it, and from our children moving North, East and West lured by exciting work adventures. It is brewed exclusively in a small brewery in Shiner, Texas, and I've observed actually imported by other states.

I guess you could say that "Lone Star", formerly a local beer, is the international Budweiser of Texas. :D
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Star_Brewing_Company

They brew Budweiser in a mammoth factory out on I10 in east Houston...for less discriminating Texans of course. It's a "local brew", maybe, but I wouldn't call it a "local beer". :D

I’m looking forward to this time off work. I’m ready for some good food, lake fun and relax time. We have decided to take the forester to save on gas.

Just now beginning to warm up to predictably long sleeve shirt weather. Everything is just now beginning to green up. Blue bonnets and Indian blankets are blooming for another couple of weeks or so. The wildflower crop is short and sparse, but slightly better than last year. If you're coming for lake fun, you won't be coming for a bit.

The lake/river was fun. The locals thought we were crazy but it was warmer than the rivers in Colorado in the summer. I had a whataburger for the first time. Can’t wait for the next time. Here is the house we rented on the Colorado river.

    Severe "shrinkage" I imagine.

Yep, Whataburger is kind of a "local burger"...the Big Mac Killer of Texas. :D

OK, tell us about the barbecue and the beer you had.

I ate at coopers and it was probably my favorite. We also had bucks in Sweetwater and Rudy’s in Amarillo. Bucks was legit! We drank mostly shiner and bud light for @ARamirez73. It was on sale and we were on the dock.

We cooked most of our food at the house. I saw lots of tundras but I don’t usually have my phone with me on vacation. So I only have a few pics. The wife has a ton of photos but non of tundras.

Nothing wrong with that! If you've been drinking Colorado Cool-aide, you should transition into that heavier, darker Shiner-from-the-old-country stuff. :burp::cheers: :D

Next time you're here, you can start trying some the local craft beers. My son is a beer aficionado; he brings beer over that's has more alcohol content than wine (~14%). It'll knock you on your butt if you're indiscreet.
