Just saw on the local news that the good old Tundra didn't test well, IIHS says it due to older design, will be interested in how this impact the redesign. Said that Ford and Dodge did a whole lot better.

I bought my first Tundra SR5 DC in 2008 because it was the TOP Safety pick, bought my 2018 Tundra SR5 DC without even looking at the ratings, assumed it was above average. Had I known, I still would of went with the Tundra, disappointed that Toyota has essentially dropped to the bottom in this category. Also, bitter that my 2018 doesn't have the drivers side grab bar, sliding center console, led illuminating the center cup holders, no large cup holders, no front door open/closable compartments, no rear door cup holders, no dual controls for AC/heat.

Other vehicles are easy to look up on the top bar if you want to compare. Looks like the CrewMax is the model that isn't testing as well when it comes to these ratings and if you do a tiny bit of digging you'll see why. "Small front overlap" is what is testing less than Good (the best rating) and it is being dragged down by poor ratings specifically in the Lower Leg/Foot area on driver side and Hip/Thigh and Lower Leg/Foot on the passenger side. Everything else is testing good but those areas testing Marginal or Poor bring the average down.

I blame the hood bulge found on new Tundra models.

Old Platform performing in newer tests, this happens a lot. A vehicle comes out and is at the top in the crash tests and within 5 yrs its towards the bottom. The next Gen Tundra should be back up near the top.

Ha, Ridgeline is unibody so compared to the BOF trucks its going to have very different results. Those videos are brutal though..

Didn’t do well?? They scored dead last!
Our trucks really do suck, at almost everything.

I keep mine cause it has a 6’ bed and it doesn’t break down. There is definitely very little reason to buy a tundra in today’s market.

Its just been surpassed by todays standards when compared to the others that have moved on from 2007. Doesn't mean its a bad truck but you cannot expect it to compete against the others in the same categories..it is reliable but it should be since its remained unchanged. This coming into the news might put a damper further on sales and then that's when Toyota will respond.

This was my 2018 that I had just bought last year. 60 mile an hour and the car in the right-hand Lane that was about three car lengths in front decided he needed to be in the left lane at that moment and did a 90 degree turn right in front of me. I did not even have a chance to tap the brakes. Witnesses said I hit him so hard that my ass in went in the air 4 to 5 ft. Every airbag deployed and I felt like I was in a giant marshmallow LOL. But the truck save my life for sure! I went ahead and bought a 2019 Tundra to replace. Not once did I ever feel that the truck was not safe. If anything the safety I feel when I drive my Tundra helped my decision. It may not look that bad but I caught that Mustang dead smack on the frame. Bent the frame in two places and snap the wheel right down the middle into two halves. And the truck still does not look totaled. But of course it was thank God LOL

I still think it's a safe truck overall. I'll take a marginally rated truck running into a high rated car any day. Look at the new Explorer and Jeep Cherokee. They also don't do well.

And I know it "can" happen but how often do you really see a wreck with a pickup where it's crushed that much? The guy above just said he got into a wreck at 60mph and his damage doesn't look anything like the IIHS tests.

If you have to hit something at speed, try and it something that will move.
Hitting solid, immovable objects at speed never works out well.

The solution to bad small overlap tests is to steer directly into the other object. That way it’s a straight frontal impact (for us).

Here's my 2011 after rolling off a mountain road about 25'. Half a roll- ended up on the roof. My 9 y/o passenger and I just hung upside down for a while. This was in 2015 when gas was high. I chased MPGs and had a brief and ill-advised affair with a GMC. Now I'm back, and happy about it.
Seeing curtain airbags deploy is pretty amazing.

how dangerous is all those "extra" trips to dealers with issues... unneccesary road trips can be deadly...another offset for the Tundra

I think the odds of getting that kind of damage in a crash are low. How often are you seeing wrecks with a completely immovable object?

    From the other crash thread:

"Depends on the wreck itself. I’m a firefighter and have seen Tundra hold up very well in a few accidents. In worse cases the truck is totaled BUT occupants were able to walk away unharmed."

"I was going to say the same, I've seen third gens rolled, front end ripped off, motors shoved back completely to where it was non existant and the passenger was always coherent and walking wounded while we use the jaws on the other vehicle to free occupant"

I wonder how the addition of a full steel front bumper, like a Ranch Hand, would affect this particular small offset test. If you watch the F150 crash the truck skips/deflects off the barrier mitigating the amount of energy actually transferred to the truck. The other trucks absorbed the full force. I think I noticed the same thing with the volvo small offset. So, would adding a steel bumper help defelct the energy of a small offset crash???

It would be interesting to see someone take an older truck that went through this test previously in stock form and slap a full steel bumper on and see the difference.
