I’m going to black out the badges on my truck. Just wondering how they turn out when painted vs. plasti-dip? Seems like plasti-dip has mixed results and there are a lot of posts. Anyone painted them?

I plasta dipped mine. If you do it right and put enough coats, it should last you a good while. Big projects is where it's apita, bumpers, grill, etc. Good luck:thumbsup:

    Alot of them
Paint will not stick to the chrome and the chrome does not come off easy. They do make black badges though.

Like others have said, plasti dip works really well on badges as long as you do it right. I've had mine done for a year and a few months now and they still look like the day I sprayed them.

When I first dipped my badges, I went on youtube and watched SO MANY videos on tricks and tips to get the best outcome.

    https://youtu.be/vGBOteFrPfo

This was one of the videos. He also posted a followup a year or two later showing how well it held up.

Someone in this forum a while back figured out how to get the chrome off their door handles pretty easily.. I'll have to search for it, but you could do that to your badges and then paint them.

    Edit: Ha, found it. https://www.tundras.com/threads/mad...bastard-diy-chrome-removal.32144/#post-796068

100% plasti dip. Don't have to remove the badges from vehicle or worry about the paint sticking to the chrome. Do enough coats and you'll be gravy. I plasti dipped mine on my tacoma and it lasted the 3 years I had the vehicle.

I plasti dipped mine and then put the plasti dip clear coat on top of that and they look perfect.

How well does the plasti dip hold up to automatic car washes?

I go through car washes once or twice a month and they've held up wonderfully. I only go through touchless washes though, so I can't speak for the ones with the flappy things.

Can anyone tell me what the best process for color matching the Tundra badge would be or is there anyone that sells them color matched? I have silver sky metallic and was thinking about coloring match that as well as the Louisiana edition badge by the rear door. Plastic Dip looks great and easy but want to color match.

How hard is it to remove the badges if you plan on painting them and reattaching? Thanks.

Just buy black ones. It’s way easier and the color stays.

I don't think plasti dip is the best. I did do it to the Tacoma steps but then it turns dull and the paint stays the way it should. I think paint is the answer.

any body shop can paint those easily and it will hold up better. Or just de-badge and call it a day.

I used the DupliColor matte carbon black on my badges, and they turned out ok. I prefer PlastiDip. This stuff was thin, runny, and tended to want to sag even when applying thin coats. The finish when cured though, is very good. Sorry- I have no pics and I am away from the truck right now.

PlastiDip makes a color that is very close to MGM, so I used it, along with their glossifier, on my bumper ends last summer. It looks just like it did when I applied it. If done right, this coating lasts a long time, and looks good. I do a weekly handwash, and I do not go through automatic car washes.

Here’s the PlastiDip on my bumpers with glossifier:35BE9C3F-2DAF-44C5-8E71-B695BE8B15AA.jpg6F161813-47DA-420B-9925-87FBC460D2A9.jpg

I had plasti dip on my Tacoma for 9 months and it went through car was probably 3-4x’s per week. Never need to reapply, although I did do about 5 coats. I’ll be putting it on my Tundra! It’s $8 a can and you can change colors whenever you want!

Was the application of the glossifier the same as plasti-dip?

I had a hard time getting the pd out of the "DRA" in TUNDRA. I used a toothpick but that stuff was stuck on, and did not come out easy. Is there a trick?

If it doesn't last, I will just break out the fishing line and delete the SR5 badge entirely, and buy the Pro badges - or just live with them in chrome.

Sorry bensky- I misinterpreted your question!

When I did my bumper ends, I used 4 or 5 coats of the Anthracite gray color. After the final 15 minute dry time, I sprayed 3 or 4 coats of the glossifier, waiting about 15 minutes between coats. I varied the speed and distance of the coats to try to get more gloss without developing any runs.

The application is similar, but I felt like you could dial up- or down- the glossiness a bit depending on your speed and spray distance. The PD color coverage was more about getting even coverage with no runs.
