Im starting this thread to share my experience and document whats going on with the truck I just bought.

Anyone else run into this issue? I checked out a couple of youtube videos but most were about the radio shutting off randomly. Nothing specific to my issue. As a side note, I noticed the previous owner had installed an aftermarket amp because the power wire was clipped at the battery terminal and I found a long RCA cord in the glove box when I was cleaning it up. I also noticed that the speakers on all the doors where aftermarket. I made sure the speakers on the dashboard where there but did not check if they were connected. I didnt want to mess with the truck any futher since the dealer was going to take a look at it. Here is the timeline:

Bought 2017 CPO Tundra CrewMax on Friday 3/15/19. Took it out for test drive and ran smooth. I honestly dont recall having the radio on during the test drive. After the test drive I parked the truck and my wife and I talked it over and I recall having the radio on then but I could only hear the rear speakers. Didnt think much of it and figured the settings where off. And I would deal with that later. After all its a CPO truck. Made a deal, signed paperwork, etc and took her home. On the way home, I didnt have the radio on because I was talking to my son about the truck and all the things we could do now that we had a truck. It was a good talk.

Next day (3/14/19) I was leaving to meet some friends and started the truck up. Turned on the radio and there was no sound. Tried AM, FM, XM, Bluetooth and nothing. Not even the beeping of the button selections. I tried making a call via bluetooth to test the sound and still had no sound. I even tried defaulting the settings and disconnecting the battery but no luck.

My sales guy had left the dealer plates in my truck so I strolled by the dealership (since I had some spare time) and dropped them off and mentioned the issue to him. He tried to get me in for service but they were busy and couldnt look at it then. I made an appointment for today (3/18/19).

Took the truck in today. They looked at it and after 1.5hrs they told me they couldnt fix it and were going to call in an audio company because they couldnt figure it out and the technicians were “more mechanicaly trained than electronically trainned”. I thought that was kinda funny since it is a Toyota product but since I know a thing or two about electronics and mechanics, it seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

So now Im waiting for the audio company to contact me and come to my house to take look at the truck. I was told a company called Kar Tunes would be handling the issue and to call the dealership in the morning to find out when they would come.

In the meantime I have my bluetooth speaker in the truck to listen to some tunes. Im just hoping the dealership wont give me grief since there are some obvious modifications to the trucks original audio set up.

    Any thoughts?

What is currently installed? Aftermarket headunit or was it returned to a stock headunit?

    If stock, which audio package?

So the headunit does turn on but no sound from any speakers reguardless of which source is selected, correct?

Possibly, speaker wires were not reconnected behind the headunit.

Stock head unit with navi (I believe its the package without the sub- havent checked). You are correct, no audio regardless of audio source. I did have audio at one point before taking it home because I remember setting a radio station and hearing it play. Im hoping its something simple as an unplugged wire.

Im willing to bet the previous owner cut the speaker wires for quick removal of aftermarket head unit and thats why no sound.

Theres a good chance the previous owner might not of had a lot of experience with audio installation.

Hopefully its something simple, but one positive you can take away from this is you did get aftermarket speakers.

It definitely sounds like the previous owner shortcutted the speaker removal/replacement. If there are aftermarket speakers, the ohms could be way off depending on how things were reconnected. Since it's CPO, let the dealership figure it out, but verify they didn't make anything worse once it's turned back over...

Update on my issues with the truck and the dealership

First off BIG pros to James at Kartunes for taking the time to talk through some ideas on a sound system and dealing with any headaches I may have caused. None of this is his fault. This is lies on the dealer IMO.

    3/19/19 850am
Contacted my service writer this morning and was told I would get a call from Kartunes to schedule appointment.
I got a call from Shane and scheduled an appointment for Friday at my home. To be continued on the radio….
I also noticed the truck is missing half the jack kit. It had the jack but not the rest of the tools. I text my sales rep and told him about it. To be continued….

Also missing owners manuals. Don't know if it's a Toyota thing but the last CPO car i bought had them. I also informed my sales rep about this and he said he would get me some.

    3/19/19 230pm
Contacted Toyota customer service to inquire about manuals, jacks parts, and radio issue. Was given case number. A rep from the dealership will call within 24hrs.

    3/19/19 3pm
Got a call from the sales manager Alex at Avondale Toyota. We discussed the issues with the truck. Said he would order the manuals and jack kit for the truck. We discussed the issue with the audio and he wanted to have the truck brought in to be looked at by kartunes tomorrow. Explained to him that i had appointment with them for Friday but i would have left the truck at the dealership but i was told by the service writer that i could not get a rental because the truck was drive-able. He said to come in and he would get me a rental so the truck could get looked at. We also discussed that the truck had aftermarket speakers and needed to be rewired back to stick and all speakers replaced for stereo to work. I also informed him that i spoke to James at Kartunes about the situation with the truck. He informed me that he was familiar with the truck and that he was supposed to rewire the truck back to stock but that it had sold before he could get to it. Alex and i discussed the possibility of getting a credit for the cost of upgrading the speakers and amplifier in the amount they would spend to return the truck audio back to stock. He said that would be a possibility but they would need to have the truck looked at.

    8pm
Picked up rental from dealer and dropped off truck. Alex and i discussed the audio issue again. He informed me he would follow up with me tomorrow after they had an idea how much it would cost to return the truck back to stock audio. To be continued….

    3/20/19
Got a follow up call from Brad (Accessories guy from Avondale Toyota) this morning stating that they had a quote from Kartunes regarding the system upgrade and that they were willing to pay part of it. I would have to pay $600 to cover the remainder. The quote I was given by Kartunes was approx $1150 for a rewire, amp kit, amp, sub, sub box and sub controller knob. I thought that was a decent deal but I countered back at $500 out of my pocket only. Brad text me back stating he would talk to Alex (sales manager) about it.

About an hour later Alex called me back to inform me that they would only cover $300 towards the upgrade or put the truck audio system back to stock. I asked why the change of heart on the original offer and was told that this was their cost to replace the speakers back to stock and wire the truck back to stock configuration. I told him I would think about it and get back to him.

After thinking it through, I decided to have the dealer return the audio system back to stock. I called Alex to inform him of my decision and informed of my expectations. My expectations were the following: 1. return all speakers back to stock. 2. I wanted all aftermarket wiring out of the truck. I didn't not want anything aftermarket left in it. 3. I wanted to keep the aftermarket speakers that were currently in the truck. 4. I was to inspect the work that was being done before receiving the vehicle back and would pull the door panels and speaker covers to ensure all was back to stock. If anything was butchered or modified I would expect that it be replaced including speaker brackets and paneling. I wanted a clean, stock, unmodified audio system and paneling. Whatever the truck looked like when it came off the showroom floor. I confirmed that the truck would be worked on on Friday and asked whether they would be done working on it that day. I was told that that was the plan but they would inform me if anything changed.

My reasoning behind my decision was partially based on a couple of things. First the dealership made an initial offer of $600 out of my pocket to do a sound system upgrade and they would cover the rest. Then they changed their offer to them only covering $300. I could swing the $600 for the sound system upgrade but I didn't want to put any more money on my part. I felt no need to spend any more money when the sound should have been working before they sold it. My second though was that by them putting everything back to stock configuration, they (dealership) could service any issues I may have with the audio system through the duration of the bumper to bumper warranty.

When I asked about keeping the aftermarket speakers, Alex informed me that I would not be able to keep them since they are replacing them with OEM speakers. He stated that they would keep them because they could use them for something else or they would just keep. them. This didn't sit well with me. I believe that I am entitled to keep them and that anything that's currently on the truck is my property regardless if they replaced it or not.

At approximately 8:00pm I sent Alex a text stating the following:
“Hello Alex its Marco with the tundra. Before you start pulling any of the speakers off the truck Im going to insist that you not keep the aftermarket speakers. There should be 4 sets of component speakers. One for each door. I have consulted with a close attorney friend and was advised that they are my property and you can no keep them. Anything that is in that truck is my property. So please ensure that they don't disappear or get damaged. I hate to give you a hard time about it. I'm sending this via text for documentation purposes. Please confirm that you received this message”

I also followed up by calling Alex. I left him a voicemail stating that I had sent him a text regarding the speakers and asked him to confirm he received it. I offered to discuss it with him if he wanted and he was welcome to call me if he felt the need to.

As it stand now, the truck is at the dealership waiting to be worked on with the expectations I listed above. To be continued...

I gotta say, that got pretty complicated, lol.
The truck manual and jack kit, i totally agree with you. I still refer to my owners manual on a regular basis. As for the jack, i didnt check for all the pieces for mine until i needed the spare tire. Oh man, talk about a lesson learned!

Really weird responce from them about keeping the speakers. I am trying to imagine what reasons they have for thinking they can claim them.

You are buying your equipment from them. They dont know the value of the speakers currently installed. And the wiring issue should be covered under your warrenty.

I think your last message to them was a good idea and hopefully that settles all of that for you.

Let us know how things go.

pop your door panel off and see what you actually have in there. Can be done in less than 5 min. If it is some cheap walmart road gear shit, then it is better if they keep it.
