So, I saw the new Ford Ranger today. It’s bigger than I thought that it would be. Looks just like the F150. I think it will give the Tacoma a run for its money!! Competition is a very good thing. So, I hope that Toyota will step up its game.

The interior is very cheap plastics it felt like -- however this will make Toyota have to step things up, just due to sheer volume of ferd fans

Ford made the exact same mistake that gm made. They made a truck that looks like an old man would drive it.

The tacoma looks like a young tough truck.

Nail on the head, this might actually force Toyota to spend some money on there truck segment. Tundra and Tacoma suffer from poor payload because they are the only ones that still have an open c frame design on the back half of the truck...everyone else has moved past this for higher towing and payload numbers.

Competition is good but i don't think Toyota really cares...look how far the fullsize trucks have pulled past the Tundra and yet were still riding on the same platform, which is a beating and a blessing in sense. Toyota has built a really strong nameplate with the Tacoma and they are just now being pressured so it will be interesting. The Colorado didn't really eat into sales and it to does things better then the Tacoma, like Towing.

As far as, the exterior designs of pickup trucks, there’s only so much of a variation that can be done. If you were to take a really close look at all the new pickups out there, you’ll notice that they all have some similarities in their exterior design. I think where the real differences come into play are under their hoods and within their interiors.

It also does seem like Ford redesigns or refreshes its pickup truck designs almost every year. That’s a sign of insecurity to me. They are actually competing with themselves. :). Nevertheless, I do believe that the Ranger is going to give the Tacoma a run for its money!!! As many of you here have mentioned, Toyota Tundra and Tacoma have both become antiques, from a modernization of design and features standpoint. They are always playing catch-up in the pickup truck market. It takes them forever to redesign their products, especially, their pickup trucks.

I’m eager to see what they will come up with in new Tundra and Tacoma.

Interesting, I was pretty sure it was the boxed frame as everyone else has moved that way, must be some benefit.

They to play catch up, I think that's why the 3rd gen taco got the motor it did. The Colorado was coming to the market and they had to hurry and make some changes. They would of been better off putting the 4runner 4.0 in there, I hope we don't get something like they have done with the taco. They could take Nissans approach and rework the 5.7 like they did with there 5.6, I think many would be happy with that.

Only ford fanboys would ever own a ranger.

Good job Ford you cut into your own f150 sales. People drive Toyota for reliability and resale value and this effects neither.

Raptor version ranger with that super charged 6 from the real raptor. It would be a rocket and look mean. Price would be the only thing saving the Tacoma

You’re absolutely correct. I liked the approach that they took with new Supra. They created an entirely new vehicle from the ground up. Although, it’s too soon to tell if the new Supra will be a success, the recreation of the vehicle was innovative and classic.

Sorry, I lost interest in ford after the 92 f-150 I bought new. Junk. They always crave a return to the dealer.

44K for a Lariat Ranger. I paid 42K for a 2012 F150 Screw 4x4. Damn these trucks are getting expensive. I’m waiting for the 2020 Tundra TRD Pro or the electrified Pro in 2021.

On my last TDY a few weeks ago... the rental company gave me a free upgrade and I picked the Ranger so I could try it out. It had 450ish miles on the clock and in about 4 days, I had racked up another 600 miles on it.

In my honest opinion (I tried my best to not be biased) ... I was not impressed at all. It had all the fancy bells and whistles on it (Lariat Edition) and came with a 10 spd attached to a 4 Cyl turbo.

MPG was roughly about 18-19 mixed driving... way less than I expected.
The transmission shifted way too roughly when cold.. and the ride quality was the worst in any truck I have ever experienced. It was the FX4 package and overall, I was really disappointed.

You may be the first person on here to have actually driven the new Ranger. Thanks for your first hand review. I got into a heated discussion with some random guy at the gas station two days ago, regarding which trucks were the best. He saw my Tundra and immediately started dogging it. He was in a 2018 Raptor.

So he went on to say that all Toyota trucks are crap and over priced. He also told me that the new Ranger will end Tacoma’s stronghold on the midsize pickup truck segment. He ranted on about the Tundra. So, I asked him how much he paid for his Raptor.....he boasted that he got a great deal on it and that he only paid $62k for it. I immediately started laughing. He then had this “Homer Simpson” look on his face....while asking me what was the joke? I told him that he paid $62k for his truck, but I only paid $50k for my TRD Pro. I also told him that I was planning on keeping my truck until the bottom falls off.

He finally said to me that the only think that he liked about Toyota trucks is that they had good long lasting engines. He then jumped into his Raptor, rev the engine a couple times for me to hear his aftermarket exhaust. Then, he bolted out of the gas station with a stream of white smoke coming out of his truck mufflers. I looked down at the spot where his truck was parked and I noticed several small spots of engine oil on the ground. :)

    Go figure!!

Why do all the owners of the big 3 say Tundras are over priced? Even with their huge discounts the quotes I got on GMs were higher. I get tired of that and comments on our MPGs. I will take the little difference in MPGs versus their reliability and resale.
