Very familiar with the match!!! HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT AND MILESTONE!!! The wife is an OB/GYN. Don't let residency scare you. It is some of the best years of your life. Some of my wife's best friends are from residency. Our youngest daughter is named after one LOL! The hours suck. Just support her and get good at cooking and re-heating meals lol. You are on your way.

Here is some free advice....Don't ask how I know.
1.Tell her to learn about billing and coding as much as possible. Docs are held accountable for their "numbers". Soon you will hear the term "RVU" these are used to control your wages. If it doesn't get coded, you don't get credit or $$$ for the work done. The only thing dumber than working your ass off is not getting paid to do it!
    2. Learn what nose and tail coverage is for malpractice insurance. It is used to trap you in a job and allows the hospitals to keep you there. Sign on bonus? Really means 5 year loan forgiven at the end of your contract. Don't take it. Loan forgiveness? Same thing. Used to trap you because you don't have the $$$ to buy out the contract. HIRE A CONTRACT ATTORNEY!!!
    3. Pay off your student loans as fast as you can!!!!!!!!! They are debilitating to your life. It is like another house payment.
    4. Don't buy a house until you have worked for a hospital for 2 years!!! Just rent.
    5. Contract attorneys negotiate your exit strategy as well as your entrance to a job. During the honeymoon phase of a job, everything is wonderful. That will quickly fade. The wife has practiced for 8 years out of residency. We have the bumps and bruises to prove it. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Don't let this deter you or kill the happiness from the match. Just remember that she has spent her life learning medicine and not business. Business is just as important as medicine for success. Remember that WORK=MONEY and MONEY=WORK... The more they pay... The more she will be expected to work. You have a wonderful family, make sure to protect their interests as well as the hospitals. AGAIN CONGRATS!!!

Thank you for the pointers! I already own a home and luckily she will be attending residency nearby. I also might just be in construction but my electrical union wages have supported her and my daughters throughout. I am blessed to make a ok living on just my income:)
