Came upon this thread today and if anyone wanted to know Nissan also hired RAM's "lead designer". I'm not sure if its the same designer whose whoring his way through truck companies but if so expect the new Tundra to look a lot like the Titan haha. Maybe also expect a Cummins diesel in the redesign? I know some people have been wanting a diesel option for a while...

I'm not sure why people are getting their panties in a bunch over the RAM designer coming over to Toyota. Have you ridden in a Ram that's a 2013 or newer? The RAM is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the Tundra in terms of interior quality and refinement. I had a 2016 Ram 1500 Sport and besides it losing value quite quickly, it was the best truck i've ever owned. Great mileage, amazing interior, SMOOOOOOTH ride, and extremely nice engine and transmission. All that RAM/Dodge hate is just uneducated fanboys who haven't even ridden in the truck. The Ram was the first truck that i've owned that required zero trips to the dealership for any problems. I like my Tundra but it just isn't on the same level as the Ram, anyone who's driven both would agree.

LOL - I agree. When the real Gen 3's shows up, I hope we start calling what we all refer to today as the "3rd Gens" what they really are (and what Toyota themselves consider them)... Gen 2.5

I somewhat hope I'm wrong but I still think the Gen 2.5's will end up being the overall best Tundras generation ever.

I would love a plug-in hybrid. Give me a truck that will do 35-50 miles on all electric with a small displacement (4.5-5.0) V8 making 325 HP/TQ that uses the electric motors to boost torque on demand. I love my old-school Toyota trucks (owned a 3rd gen 4runner, 3 1st Gen Tundras, 3 first Gen Tacomas and a 1 3rd gen Tacoma) and won't be getting rid of my 2006 Tundra, but time moves on and Truck's aren't going backwards. I'd love a truck that would burn no gas for my daily commute (20 miles a day) and would still have the power and range to do weekend duty and get 20+ mpg doing that. BRING IT ON I say...

I'm generally on board with this. Industry will end up here, like it or not.

I thin the 5.7 will still an option for a few years, then we'll see it go away at some point and won't be offered any longer.

Maybe the 1/2 tons are different, but I have ridden in several 13+ Ram 2500s and 3500s (was seriously considering getting one for a while). I wholeheartedly disagree with your interior quality comment. Sure, the Ram has lots of bells and whistles and creature comforts. But my impression (at least for the HD platforms), is that the interior is sort of chincy/cheap feeling. Also, the back seats seem fairly thin and frail compared to my Tundra. I'm not that impressed with the interiors. Again, the 1/2 tons could be different - I haven't ridden in any of them.

I'd have to disagree. I rented a RAM a few weeks ago on a work trip and i felt like the interior was weak as could be. But, maybe that's the rental car level trim i was getting. Maybe higher level trims are different. It did drive pretty smoothly.

    A bunch
Between the 2018 Ram SLT I test drove a month ago (GF would like a truck and I was curious what a Ram drives like) and it is far from light years ahead. Instrument cluster is better than mine, but the new Tundra's have changed to be more like the others. Seats are a push, not special but not bad, Interior quality felt average, but it was an SLT so it was expected. I think the Ram is a tad faster and it is a quieter ride. But then there's the rotary transmission dial - it will be a very cold day in hell before I ever pay for a vehicle with a rotary dial. There's just no driving feel to it. So after driving the Ram I still think my Tundra is a better truck.

I think you're equating comfort and interior amenities with overall truck capability and durability.

In terms of comfort, the Ram 1500 does ride better, which makes sense given that its using coil springs at all 4 corners (as opposed to the traditional setup of coils up front and leaf springs in the rear). The Tundra rides more like a truck (big surprise) and I think the engineers put a little bit more emphasis on load handling and durability.

Also, while the newer Rams look more modern and perhaps have more features compared to the Tundra, the actual build quality still leans toward the Tundra IMO...meaning the Tundra' interior components and parts, though they might not have the nth degree of comfort and refinement, will hold up better over the longrun.

And perhaps most importantly, even if the Ram 1500 is a more comfortable and more refined vehicle (at least in terms of of the interior), Ram, and FCA overall, has literally one of the worst reputations for reliability, according to any number of ownership surveys and studies.

So fine: the Tundra isn't every bit as comfortable and refined as a Ram 1500...but it's still comfortable enough and, more importantly, it lasts for a long time. The rest of the Ram platform (frame, chassis, pushrod v8) certainly isn't "lightyears" ahead of the Ram; arguably, it lags behind the Tundra in certain regards.

Exactly why I went with the 19' Tundra over the F-150 wanted to put my money into solid mechanics, good ole fashoned 5.7 V8, not a turbo charged engine out of a sedan.

Seems i'm buying up the last of the great generation of vehicles. Last of the line of a great generation of trucks, also bought the last year dirtbike that KTM is making with a 2 stroke with a carburetor. Hope I don't need anything new for a LONG time

Regarding reliability, feel free to peruse the histogram about half way down the page. Fiat has a laughable amount of quality problems, and from an organizational design point of view it only makes sense that FCA as a whole would use the same quality system (administered by the same people) for all of their vehicles. So, when it comes The Ram and my coin..."nein danke".

I’m down with some type of hybrid. Or at a min, better MPG! Electric for local, gas for distance. Just don’t lower payload/towing, gotta pull my RZR!

30mpg seems pretty high IMO but who knows. I'm not really for a hybrid system, its going to add weight which in return decreases payload which already isn't very high. Plus its more to go wrong down the line and my guess is hybrid system parts are not cheap.

1500 series trucks are turning more and more into sedans with a bed with each new generation. My next truck will most likely be a 2500 so I can escape all the "fluff" going into the new trucks.

Times 2. I have been a long time Ford owner but left because of Ford’s focus on Ecoboost. Give me a relatively simple V8 please, with exhaust pipes.

Have to agree with you on the interior fit and finish, ride quality, and amenities with the truck. They are MUCH better and the brand new redesign of the ram is AMAZING. I can’t even begin to afford one though, nor a new Tundra. I love my truck, just saying the new ram is awesome. My buddy’s dad bought a new Big Horn, and the level of interior refinement is crazy and that’s not even the top of the line model!

I would have to agree with this, the new RAM looks great in mine opinion and puts the others to shame in that aspect. Reliabilty who knows, I have never owned a dodge/Chrysler/fiat product before.

As far as a RAM designer coming to Toyota, the Toyota trucks lead engineer Mike Swears was previously at Chrysler.

I'm in the same camp as most here and glad I got my 18 when I did. With that said, I drove a Tesla model s 90d the other day and was flat out amazed with the acceleration. I think I'll accept the hybrid thing as time goes on. That 90D took a lot of the hater out of me!

I was thinking the other day. Why are they using turbo v6 in the ford and not a turbo/blown straight 6? Seems like the inline 6 might be more torquey? They have room for it

Probably because they already have a V8 developed, they just lop off two cylinders. Saves money on development.
