I've noticed something that my '15 limited 5.7 crewmax does that my old '12 TSS DC 4.6 didn't do, or at least I never noticed it. When I am slowing down at say a redlight or stop sign the transmission drops down a gear and uses the engine to brake also. Is this normal? This is just while driving around, not in tow/haul mode or anything special.

Also on my '12 the throttle was super touchy. On my '15 it is not. I thought that is what tundra owners complained about and used things like tuners to fix, the touchy throttle. Did the later years get that fixed or is mine abnormal?

My 18 is very noticeable, seems pretty smart to me but then I came from a 1st gen which didn’t do that

Yeah I don't mind at all, just was not sure if it was normal or not. Buying the truck second hand I'm not sure what the previous owner did or didn't do.

It's normal. Toyota's xmsn ECU incorporates some artificial intelligence programming. Tries to anticipate your intentions. And it knows when you let up on the accelerator and when you apply the brakes.

    Normal.

I grew up driving manual transmissions in everything. My last Tacoma was my first automatic, and the way it shifted always bugged me. But I'm actually pretty happy with the way my Tundra shifts.

Yeah everything I drove was a manual also. I actually like the downshifting but since my '12 didn't do it I wanted to make sure it was normal. My friends '11 doesn't do it either so it must be the '14+ that it changed.

My '13 does it, or did it, before the D.A.P. tune. A little different now.

    Normal.

If your press the tow/haul button the throttle will feel more like your 12'.

My 2018 downshifts at stops. It would seem to me that although it saves brake wear, it must also decrease fuel mileage as engine revs increase.

This is a valid point and something I keep meaning to discuss here.

I find my truck in normal mode often downshifts when I come off the gas.
I can't even coast for shit unless going downhill, even then it sucks.
You actually have to keep your foot slightly on the gas to even freewheel/coast at all.

This is very stupid, frustrating, and is wasting fuel for sure.

This engine braking when you come off the gas should ONLY happen when using the tow/haul button, due to the added weight.

Toyota got this all wrong imho.

This is a source of part of our low mpg.
How much is debatable, but it's a measurable amount I'm sure.
