Maybe a dumb question, but is it ok to drive with the safety sensors disconnected? I took the bumper caps off to take them to be powder coated and so have the grill off right now.

Just wondered if that will cause any issues with the ecu once I start it and drive around, or after I reconnect it later.

Should be fine. Same as driving an older truck. No nannies. Even if you have to reset once you re-install, it'll be same no matter how long it was disconnected.

Not sure I’d want to risk driving my truck around without a front bumper or grille... as for the TSS system being unplugged, I’m guessing your dash will be lit up with error codes. Isn’t the system tied into the ECU?

I ended up just putting only the grill back on so I could plug the sensors back in. Not really planning to drive anywhere far, and I have another vehicle I can use in the meantime.

I dunno, maybe I can get used to this look, lol.

A lotta people on here have done this-- either to plasti-dip/ paint, or to replace with a custom bumper. If none of these chime in here, you could look through the build threads for newer trucks with after-market bumpers, and find out from them how it worked. I can say, I haven't seen any threads about related problems. And anyway, you've already pulled your bumper... so do what you plan to do, then figure it out after. ;)

Edit: I guess I was writing while you posted your last.

By the way, my truck does not have parking sensors. But I was looking behind that little piece above the bumper caps and it appears to be wired for them. So I guess it's possible to add them. Don't know what else is required.

How much did it cost to get the bumper caps powder coated?

$275. Which seemed a little high to me, but the plastic caps that go on top of existing cost about the same so I went this route.

I believe all Tundras are pre-wired for parking sensors. Mine have those plugs too.

What color are you going with on the powder coat? I don't know a lot about it. Are they able to color match or get close?

Black, matching the lower valance. I felt like color matching the cement would be just a bit too much cement, as I'm going to swap the grill bulge and surround to cement.

I was wrong about this price in that it included all the disassembly/reassembly of the bumper. Since I did that myself, it only cost $150 for the two front bumper caps.

If anyone in or near Austin is considering powder coating, give Austin Powder Coating a call...they did an excellent job. And as it turns out the owner drives a Tundra :)
