Does anyone now if you can add a tow/haul switch to the 2016 4.6 SR. I know that the tundras are prewired for brake control and is plug and play for factory control. So was wondering if truck is prewired for tow/haul?

    Thank,
    Dan

I believe he is asking if his truck is prewired for the Tow/Haul button. I do not believe so.

If it doesn't have the Tow Package, then I'd be surprised if it were pre-wired. If it has the Tow Package, I would suspect that it would already have a Tow/Haul button. The Tow Package Tow/Haul function changes how the the transmission shifts and the throttle tip in. As the engine and transmission are computer controlled, I would guess that the trucks with/without the Tow Package have differently software programmed to the ECUs. Then there's your final drive ratio....

Only way to tell would be to get behind where it goes and see if wires are there, there is a good possibility that it is prewired for the break controller, I know in the bumper plug there is just a place holder cap and behind it the wires are there for towing so you just need the $45 adapter there that fits in the slot. The fog lights are pre wired on trucks that dont have them the SR versions.

It is pre-wired for the brake controller behind the panel on the right under the steering wheel.

So how do we add one? I have A small trailer and was able to plug everything in and the lights work. But don’t have a tow button so had to be making sure my RPMs weren’t going over 2,000. How do we add this tow button feature?

2018 Crewmax SR5, I have a tow hitch with trailer plugs. How ever no brake controller or tow/haul button. Checked and all the wires are there. How to add Tow/ Haul button?

You just have to put it in manual mode to keep it in the proper gear for the proper rpms. Brake controller can be added. I did so on my 2019 SR5 crewmax 4.6L

What are proper rpms? Like I towed boats before with my suv didn’t care about rpm

I was always told around 2,000 anything over 2,500-3,000 is not good you could over -Tun the engine?

You can spin it a (lot) bit higher than 3k when you need to. The 4.6 doesn’t have a iot of Bottom end torque, you gotta let it rev and drink fuel.

You will do more damage if you try to keep the rpm’s down and let the transmission shift back and forth. Just put it in S4 and drive it.

If it’s trying to upshift/downshift a lot pulling up a grade, just shift down to keep it in the gear it needs to pull.

I have been searching for almost a year if anyone has added a tow haul switch. Found nothing and finally took the chance. I bought a switch from dealer and found pre wired plug. Plugged it all in and of course it didn’t do anything. By the way mine is a 2012 with 5.7 that didn’t come with a tow package from factory. Found that out after I bought it last year. So if anyone has any idea how to get the truck to see the new switch that would be really helpful.

Your the 2nd person i hear of to take the plunge to purchase the tow/hitch switch and it not work. Idk why they would have that switch available where it should go and it doesn’t work at all. That baffles me.

I even asked one of the techs at the dealership today when I picked it up. He looked at me like why wouldn’t it work. I could tell he kinda thought it was dumb for me to even ask. I have to admit I was pretty confident after asking him. That went away fast. I’m going to try and go in tomorrow and see if any other techs have a idea. If not I will watch these and hope someone finds something some day I guess.

Any chance there might be a relay/fuse that needs to be added along with the switch?
    Just a thought...

I'm pretty sure it's more than just is taking a switch and relay. There is probably PCM software involved as well.

That was the last hope I had. I just went and pulled every fuse I could find that had anything to do with tow. Everything looked find. The only thing I couldn’t confirm is if one of the blanks on mine is where it would go if it came factory. So I have been trying to find other fuse box layouts to see if they look anyway different then mine. Have not found much luck confirming that yet tho.

Yeah I have a feeling it’s going to take some very expensive programming.
Squatting Pigeon I think your right on the amount of write ups. That should of been my red flag for sure. Thanks for the ideas guys.

If you had read the entire post it could have saved you time and money to realize this has already been attempted with the same results twice.
