I'm shopping for a used tundra. I am looking at a 2010 model, among others. How do I tell the towing capacity? Did they come with just a 6-speed, or was there a 5-speed model? What all determines the payload and towing capacity?

The VIN of the truck in particular that I'm looking at is 5TFDW5F11AX109864. Can the VIN be decoded to tell the options that determine towing capacity and payload?

The one you're looking at is a 6 speed..... once again, I really believe that Google will benefit you here.

    I wouldn't know, I'm shopping for a tundra. I don't own one yet.

Google result for me gave a range, which I've since found to be bullshit. What were your search terms?

On this page it seems that it would be 10,100 https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/08/toyota-lowers-trailering-ratings-gains-credibility.html

Previously I've read that it depends on if they have the 5 spd or the 6 spd, and that the models with the 6 speeds had larger ring gears in the rear differential. I do now know how to tell what model came with what, other than perhaps a VIN decode. I also wonder if there were different brake size options or other suspension or driveline options that would affect capacity on different year models. Any information and education about these aspects of these trucks that anyone can provide or point me towards would be appreciated.

You can email the VIN to Toyota and they will reply with specs and options. Don't think it list towing capacity but you will know if it has factory tow pkg.

If you look on the side of the driver door, where it’s circled will tell you how much you can tow, and the arrow will tell you its a 6 speed automatic and if it’s a 4WD or 2WD.

the other important number to keep in mind is the payload capacity. the tundra will run out of payload capacity long before you reach the towing capacity. depending on options, the payload for the tundra is ~1500-1600 pounds. towing a 10,000 pound trailer will most likely come with a 1000 pound tongue weight. add 2 adults and some gear and you are over your payload.

Go to Toyota.com>Owners>My Vehicle>Vehicle Specs>Enter VIN. Everything you ever wanted to know about the truck.
