I recently purchased a 2011 Tundra with the steel wheels (picture of truck in my avy) and I want to put the Toyota aluminum wheels on the truck, but I know that the aluminum wheels use different lug nuts, which I have, and the air pressure sensors are different. The steel wheels use metal stems with the sensors built in (at least that's the way my trucks's are). I bought a set of used aluminum wheels that have rubber stems but no sensors. So, do I have to buy rubber stems, with sensors, install the rubber-stems-with-sensors on the aluminum wheels, and then get the truck programmed to read the sensors? Here's a picture of the wheels I want to put on my truck, I took the pic from another thread:

    Thanks for your help.

So i was always told that the steel and alloy wheels use different sensors. Yet the sensors from my steel oem wheels fit my new method wheels...

It's likely the rubber stems you have were used in place of the OEM TPMS Sensors. The sensors you need are like the steel ones, just have a different angle on the sensor to position correctly in the rim.

I've heard you can use either or if very careful when installing but they can be broken easily when dismounting again. If a tire shop doesn't know they can damage the sensor since the angle has them closer to the bead in case from either steel to alloy or vice versa. My usual tire shop that does a great job cracked one of my sensors even though it was and alloy to alloy swap with the right sensor for alloys. They break easy so tell the shop to be very careful.

Mine was cracked ever so slightly and had a slow leak which progressed to a huge leak and then broke off in a blizzard trying to fill the tire after tpms indicated it was low again. So anyway, make sure whoever does the tpms sensor/rim tire install is very aware and careful of the sensors. And make sure they are super careful removing if needed again in the future if you don't have the correct sensor for the alloy rim.

You can reuse the steel wheel sensors using a strap kit but it's fairly inexpensive to just buy new sensors. In my experience the non-OEM sensors have worked just fine and save you a few extra bucks.

I assume that if I buy the sensors, they come pre-programmed for my truck?

No, but most tire shops including discount tire/americas tire can program them, they didn't charge me when I bought tires from them and wanted to change wheels/sensors

I've bought 3 sets of stock wheels for my 07 SR5 and all have come with sensors that didn't need programming. There are different lug nuts for non-steel wheels but you can see if the new wheels come with them.

Unfortunately, the ones I bought just came with rubber stems, no sensors. The good news is, I got a great price on them...
