baofeng ALL DAY. I find it useless out here on the east coast though. The club I offroad with want's to go CB. I keep trying to tell them to go 6m so I don't have to buy more hardware, but they like that CB is ol' cheap ,and trusty when neither is true. They are wanting to roll with the older and more established clubs who require CB to run with them. I've insisted they use low range vhf, to the point the leadership has suspended the vote. Honestly, I think they all just want 22' antennas coming off their trucks. There's 2 of us with baofengs, both from the west coast.

    Bwhahahah, that was pretty good...

BTW im with the teams, have been to NSW comms school as well as some other schools, im not a normal IT/RM on a ship bro but i get your point, plus in the teams, its the operators who break shit and we have to fix it... And additionally id like to point out i totally get rules and regs. I just could honestly give two shits about some 60-year-old retiree who has a hardon for being a dick to some offroad guys, plus as Alex pointed out. Our group stays off repeaters, keep to normal public channels. So i really dont worry about it in the first place, the point of this whole thread was regarding CB's which for intent and purpose is dead and Ham has replaced it.

All this talk of the FCC, cops, getting arrested, and all I want to to is use Family Radio Service and Multi-Use Radio Service. No individual license is required and it's not illegal so I'm not worried about it.

Yep you're good to "legally" go so long as you use radios designed/approved for that purpose. Baofengs are not. Not passing judgement on their usage for that purpose (the gods know...) but just be sure to understand the difference.

You can use those if you want. My radio is dual band and unlocked so I could illegally chat with you. But then I would have to repeat everything between you and the other guys which gets old quick.

unlocked radio might not be legal, but damn it sure is nice to have one piece of gear that can talk to ham, FRS, GMRS, race teams, even LEO and search and rescue if shtf

    and I totally agree with @papasmurf CB is D E D

Would you say the Rugged RH-5R is garbage too then? (serious question, not being condescending.)

Sorry I don't know anything about rugged. Everyone I wheel with uses Kenwood or baofeng. I think one guy has a yaesu

baofeng just stands out to me because so many guys have problems with them. They wont charge, the keyboard doesnt work, they get shocked haha

Kenwood is more expensive, but it just plain works. I've been using mine for 6 years now

The RH-5R is a UV-5R that Rugged messed with and marked up.

    Something to note:

The Kenwoods osidepunker linked do NOT transmit on MURS/FRS/GMRS out of the box. They can listen for the most part, but they cannot transmit.

The Baofengs do both receive and transmit on those frequencies out of the box.

So what? Well, unless you're willing to buy the more expensive stuff, then crack the case and get busy with the soldering iron (or a screw driver popping diodes as osidepunker points out; just depends on the radio), you wont be able to use your radio to TALK to anyone else who only has those smaller walkie talkies you see everywhere (that you can buy at Walmart, or Target etc). You would need to have two radios if the goal is to talk with greater power over ham frequencies AND ALSO be able to talk to those with the store bought "channel X" type radios.

Not true with the Baofeng. With the Baofeng you can listen AND talk to those radios out of the box.

Who cares? For those looking for the "one ring to rule them all" and who do not want to modify that radio, Baofeng is really your only choice at the moment.

Side note: that's one reason the amateur radio community/US legal radio mfgs are up in arms (and therefore pressing the shit out of the FCC to do something about it). Out of the box, Baofengs (and their clones) are designed to break US law. All others are designed to comply with US law.

Another side note and to reiterate: TRANSMITTING using an out-of-the-box Baofeng, or TRANSMITTING using a modified-other-Brand (on 2m or 70cm without a license, AND/OR on MURS/FRS/GMRS with OR without a license) is illegal. Reason is the power levels. The radios we've discussed cannot dial down the power enough to send a transmit at the legal power level. This is why we buy these radios though right? More power means greater distances (in theory), so...

All stuff to consider as you decide what to do.

jeezus man. The Kenwoods will transmit/receive on those freqs with a simple mod. Open it up and pop a couple diodes with a little screwdriver. It took me literally 10 minutes.

baofeng is junk plain and simple. If you prefer to save money and use a product that is less reliable, then you do you homie. I prefer to use quality gear

and yes, we all know its illegal to transmit using a modded radio :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hey don't shoot the messenger. I'm not making the assumption "we all know" anything. Hell dude, I would have LOVED having someone like me explaining all this crap like this when I was climbing the learning curve. Remember the context here; we started this convo by asking about CB radios for shits sake. My comments aren't for you, in other words :p

I'm not shooting the messenger. But you act like you need an engineering degree to make a kenwood work as I described. You don't need a soldering iron and you don't need two radios. You only need one radio and 10 min of your time. Then you have access to almost every freq you can think of. Sht I can even talk to airplanes

Then you beat a dead horse about the legalities involved. Look we get it. But we don't care

I use these for my VOL Fire Dept, but I do have ham and Gmrs in them. Using a vhf/uhf duplexer and a dual band diamond antenna.

So I literally saw a handful of responses to the original CB radio question and then everything went to HAM radio blah blah blah.....

Can we get back ok topic?

    Bree,
I have the Cobra 75wxst 40-channel CB Radio. Mine is about 15 years old. I have move it from each car that I had over the years. As soon as it warms up and stops raining I will install it in the Tundra. Very compact and easy to hide.

    It ranges between $100 & $125.
