My tundra makes a loud whining noise from the engine compartment for a couple of mins after starting. Appears to only do it in cold weather. It goes away as the truck warms up.

I have heard that also on mine. It only lasts about 30-45 secs then goes away. Only does it in really cold weather.

My guess would be the on of the pulley shafts is really cold and it goes away until it gets some heat on it. Just a guess

My truck had a very loud whining noise from passengers side, lasted quiet a while engine warm or cold and usually happens right after the UPS man delivered a new package

Sounds like it could possibly be Belts/ a Pulley? I know a friend had a similar noise occur and it ended up being a bearing in his Alternator.

Is your steering stiffening up by chance? It could also be the Power Steering pump. This sound would also increase throughout RPMs, but you say it goes away after the truck warms up so this might be irrelevant.

Likely a pulley going out. If it is squealing, that's about all the warning its gonna give you. My experience, it will just get worse till failure. Or drives you nuts. Jmo

The sound that you're hearing is the air injection pump. It's utilized on cold starts to reduce emissions. I had the same thing on a BMW and it sounded like a rocket taking off when I started the car. I here the same thing on my 18 1794 CM in the morning. Hope this helps.

Last time I had whining noise it was my alternator. The time before that was my serpentine belt. If you've got warranty just take it in they'll take care of it.

Thanks, makes sense why it doesn't do it in the summer.

I just picked up a new to me 2017 and I have this noise you capture in that short video clip. Did you ever figure out what it was? Mine seems to only happen in the 1800-2100 rpm range. Funny thing is when in part it doesnt do it. I really sounds like its coming from the radio and is the classic alternator "whine" you would get with a poorly installed car stereo.

My 14 would do this from time to time. It is the air injection pump. Mine would only do it for a few seconds when it was really cold and humid. I believe there was some ice forming in the air pump. Maybe once or twice a year.

    Tastefully enhanced...
Could be a tensioner pulley, which apparently is a "common failure" on these engine platforms, or the Air Injection Pump as Sundance suggested...

Mine has done that since I bought it when the temperature is cold. I read on another forum that it was possibly a combination of the serp belt and tensioner. I replaced both of those and the noise seemed to go away for a while. It is back this winter, though. Damn truck sounds like a pissed off goose during the winter.

Nope, that is the same noise from my truck. Mine is more pronounced. I used to have a video of mine somewhere - I'll try to dig it up.

Ok. So im guessing if I was able to maybe rig up a gopro under the hood I would see that its quite loud in the engine compartment and im only just hearing it barely inside the cab. I was convinced it was some type of alternator whine.
