Except it's not. In 1970 there were 25 per 100k people killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2017 it was 11.

    That information is misleading.

It is more dangerous now compared to 1970, but the death toll is lower because of SRS and because we have more & better first responders that save lives that would have been otherwise lost

Distraction is a major contributor to accidents. So I’m all for disabling cell phones while the vehicle is in motion. And don’t give drivers licenses to illegal aliens.

For 3 years my daily was a VW beetle with no seatbelts, no working turn signals, no working fuel gauge, no windshield wipers, non collapsing steering column, and to top it off the front seats are held in place by wingnuts. I still have the car and my level of comfort went way up when I started driving cars with all of those features plus airbags.

You have to remember that not everyone is 24 years old. Not everyone has reflexes, not everyone pays attention to what they should. Those little things like backup cameras and the side mirrors that light up aren't "needed" but they're nice to have. I know I appreciate seeing other people's lights go off when I'm passing them at night in my black truck.

Sure but there are also twice as many licensed drivers and they on average drive 4,000 more miles a year.

In 1999 it was 15 people per 100k, so it's still safer than it was 20 years ago after safety systems were in place.

Your ascertain that it is "much more dangerous" is a fallacy.

In the end there are many things that can go wrong piloting a 2 ton machine and they'll never be idiot proof but if back up cameras and collision prevention systems save a few lives is it not worth it?

There is no question that it is much more dangerous out there.

The fallacy in your assertion Festerw, is that you are only looking at a numerical death toll. Not all dangerous situations on the road result in death, but that does not negate the fact that it's more dangerous out there.

Most people drive every day of their lives. When you do something that much it becomes automatic and that leads to complacency.

I’ve been a cop for 10+ years. That comes with alot of driving. And I’ve had the privilege of seeing people do some pretty dumb and careless shit in vehicles. Most people don’t take driving serious enough. Either they don’t care or don’t realize how easy it is to get killed doing it. I’ve seen moms driving 90+ with a car load of kids and young drivers driving beyond their abilities and ending up dead or wishing they were. I guess since driving is just something everyone does people don’t think it’s dangerous. Some of those same people probably get nervous as hell flying on a plane even though it’s statistically safer.

I’ve found myself bitching about all these safety features. People definitely shouldn’t rely on them but in my opinion they help more than they hurt. Will it make people worse drivers? I doubt it, they are pretty good at being bad at it already.

In conclusion, people are stupid, they need all the help they can get.

3-1 level kit with add a leaf. 295/70/18r cooper max. Spider head light tail light and third brake light, tint, badges off, ladder racks, trd pro grill, color matched hood bulge, grab handle, coach builder +2, dv8 front bumper with winch, fender flares, bed cover....
Yes people should not RELY on these things but it makes it easier safer it’s just like having two opinions on something. I like my camera and BSM. Do I need it? No. I also have the franc harness. I have it just gives extra insurance. Especially someone said something about kids or dogs.... I love kids and dogs. Don’t want to run them over in my big truck. Also I can be more precise and go faster in reverse looking back in side mirror. But usually use camera in parking lots. Once again. If you know how to drive without them. And also have them. You will benefit

I don’t want my insurance rate to increase because of someone stupidity but for me my car insurance is decent and I’m paying about $850 for every 6 months. I had 2 active speeding tickets and 1 just expired so my insurance company is saying I will get $70 of my insurance premium which might be $780 for 6 months but I can let you know when my renewal is up. Mind you I am 24 so not bad rate and I do pay everything byself including rant so don’t say I am being helped out by anyone.

I have driven vehicles without and with all sorts of features. I like the tundra and the amount of features it has. I love rear cross traffic alert. There are a lot of times i have to back up that I can't see even with all of my mirrors and a camera.

Nothing wrong with extra safety. This generation is going to crap and if autonomous driving saves lives so be it. I'd rather a car drive itself than a POS who thought "I'm only buzzed" Googles self driving cars had a really safe driving record for the amount of miles logged. I advocate for personal responsibility when driving for sure but if they still hand out licenses to unskilled drivers what are we to expect. On a side note, I have to use many different trailers at work and that backup camera is very convenient. Can i do it without it, yeah, no problem, but the camera makes it all easier.

Lol I would but my work doesn’t want to get the oil change unless it’s 50 miles left or over. I have until 50699 and I have 49488 miles. It’s not my company or my truck so can’t do much to it.
the thing with autonomous driving is that it can’t drive in snow or anything like that because there is no driving lines in snow and it can’t follow construction ppl either like when the stop sign comes and says go and it has to go left in order to go.

Snow only falls on certain areas. There is still plenty of use for autonomy.

But can you tell me those situations didn't occur prior to 2007?

Can you tell me without data to back it up that screens account for most of the situations and not just from the sheer volume of drivers on the road?

Those dangerous situations are much safer regardless of the cause because vehicles are engineered for safety through new technology.

I'm not arguing that there aren't a lot of stupid people doing stupid things in vehicles, that's just humans for you.

The only certainty is that life has a 100% chance of death.

Yeah. Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. My PCS slammed on the brakes when are car pulled out in front of me before I could react and hit the brake myself. The computer has a much lower reaction time than a human ever will regardless of “training and experience.” It saved me from a crash.

There’s still rain that most states get so I don’t know how that will work when the car is hydroplaning. I even hate that most cars nowadays don’t come with a manual anymore. I get it for family suvs/cars but have an option that every they ppl want. It’s not like most companies still can’t make a manual in a car that needs a manual. Just like the Supra and what a disappointment it was without a manual.

Back up camera is the only one I really need. It is real helpful hooking up trailers. As far as the other stuff goes I have no real need. I don't use cruise much at all so don't have a use for adaptive cruise. I was taught in drivers ed to check my mirrors every 8 seconds so I a pretty well aware of what is around me. The problem is the traffic weavers doing 10-15 mph more than everybody else. These are the ones that will get you. Oh and my first 2 vehicles were manuals. Buddy was given a Caddy CTS with a manual and the Vette engine for a weekend. He asked me if I wanted to drive it. I said heck yes and then he said can you drive a manual and I said heck yes.

I don’t actually mind the backup camera because that is important but I don’t think ppl need lane keep assist or radar cruise control. Like I said the more things come factory on your car then the more it cost to insure since they have to replace more parts which are more expensive. If I could get an XSE camry 2019 manual tranny, I would. I mean heck they redesigned the camry to look sporty but not give a good manual tranny which sucks. I get it that the DCT is faster and more error prone but I don't care bout that. Atleast if they could put it in the TRD version that would be sweet because after all its suppose to be toyota racing development and nothing screams TRD like a manual tranny with the new v6. I could careless for AA/ACP or even the pano sunroof or even the red leather.

I like my back up camera. By far my favorite feature of modern cars. I still use my mirrors to back in but the back up camera is useful.

People bash the new technology in cars, but really(well once its been more established and kinks worked out) it's pretty genius way to make up for peoples lapse in attention which could end up saving your life one day.

When has anything developed to be national been adequate? I don't disagree with you, but it can't be a gov thing. Trust me, I work for the gov. Lol.

The tech isn't supposed to make up for training, or (un)common sense
