The competing companies are quick to redesign and make more fuel efficient trucks. This is a big market with big profits. I and many others want Toyota quality, not one of those other brands. Tundra is a bit dated with fuel economy that is not so hot. This is where the money is, not sedans

Toyota has not taken the American big pickup market seriously in the past and it looks like they are up to their old ways. I still think a tundra is a better choice than competitors products but they can do better.

Im tired of hearing about gas mileage when the big three get nowhere near what they claim. Add that to poor quality and Toyota stands above the rest. Give me power and reliability anytime.

Welcome from Obx. Toyota's not gonna compete with the big 3, Sweers made that clear in a interview with Tim Esterdahl formally @ Tundra Headquarters. While it was mentioned there going down a different path (Hybrid) or whatever ever. It's safe to say most Tundra owners could care less about all the bells and whistles. The Tundra has earned it's worth and place against any truck out there, and when it comes to Dependability and Reliability, Toyota takes the top .

A full size truck made of steel and powered by a large enough V8 engine to produce the kind of power people want/expect is not going to be "fuel efficient". That's just the way it is.

The other 3 companies try to get around that by playing games. Smaller engines with less cylinders but with power adders to try and make up the difference. Using the computer and sensors to shut off cylinders when the computer decides you don't need the extra power. Making the truck out of recycled soda cans, etc..

Toyota chooses reliability over technology and so do I, that's why I buy Toyota's. The only way for Toyota to make any significant improvement in fuel economy is for them to start playing the same kind of games the other 3 play. That's not something I personally would be interested in but YMMV?

I know the market is going to force them in that direction which is probably why I'm not all that interested in the next gen Tundra.

Toyota can start backing up their claims for dependability and reliability by choosing to focus on corrosion engineering for once. Consider all the frames rusting out on tundras and tacomas. My FJ40 you could put your feet through the recycled metal floor to stop like Fred Flintstone if you wanted to. Upgrading the AB60F tansmission would go a long way to improving the vehicle performance under load. First gear is what, a 3.33? Combine that with a 4.30 rear end and you are left with approximately a 14.2: 1 ratio. Typical big 3 8-speed will have approximately 5.0 : 1 first, leaving a 19.6 : 1 drive ration with just 3.92s in the rear, plus the additional gas savings in the overdrive gears. The old port injection is a benefit though for long term engine reliability but they will likely go to a combination of port & direct someday, I'm afraid.

What's the trade off for AT MPST 6mpg peak gain? Twin turbo v6 that sounds like a v6 mustang with exhaust? A V8 with cylinder deactivation and a 10spd with tons of issues? The Hemi I love and the Dodge zf8hp transmission is fantastic. I have no qualms there but their fuel efficiency is inline with ours anyway.

Sometimes the grass isn't greener it's just burnt sod painted. For the record Ford can't make a reliable, powerful DOHC engine (5.4 3v cam phasers, 5.4 4v crap power and poor MPG) And Chevy 6.2 has MPG inline with ours Sooooo.........

The other trucks get the mpg numbers up by testing in "ideal" situations that allow all those engine nannies to work like afm. Work them like a truck and they are down there with the Tundra, I had a 2014 Silverado with afm and guess what I'm getting about the same with the Tundra MPG wise, the Tundra just does things better.

+1, my brothers 2017 F150 5.0 gets 16 on the hwy. Somehow the big 3 get away with inflated EPA numbers. My Toyotas have always been real close to the EPA numbers while my Fords always did worse. Now the AFM GM motors will do a little better but do you really want one and all the problems that go with it?

Just bought a Tundra for this reason ... not keeping up with the Jones when it comes to stupid tricks to try and save 1 mpg. I want an engine that runs good on "regular" gas ... not premium like the GM 6.2. Its an old platform ..yes.. but a dang good dependable platform.
I think one of the reasons Toyota does not have to play silly games is because they sell so many cars that get 30+ mpg ... its all part of the CAFE standards across the line. GM/Ford/Dodge hardly sell anything that helps the overall CAFE numbers.

    And Welcome from Texas.
