Tundra Traxxas Build

Has anyone else besides myself turned their Traxxas/RC into a Tundra?

 

I would like to get into RC stuff with my son, what is a good make/model to start with?

 

I got a Traxxas Slash because they told me it's a good starter. From there on you can start building it. There is a 4x4 and a 4x2. It's all preference. There's also a brushless motor and brushed. The brushless motors are better because you can build it and make it faster. Stock speed is about 35mph I think. I upgraded my battery, parts, wheels, etc. Now I'm hitting 65+ on my Traxxas Slash 4x4 brushless.

How old is your son? Too many people buy a car that's too fast, or too hard to drive and repair. Traxxas makes great cars at all levels. Plus, you can start with a nice car (or truck), and upgrade as you go. Find a hobby shop in your area that specializes in radio control and ask if there's a local track. Watching a couple of races, and asking the racers about their rigs, will help you get started in the right direction. I raced for a few years, was race director for a few, and was the director at a national championship. I saw a lot of kids get discouraged because the car was just too fast for them to handle, or too complex to maintain.

 

@Randy Morton he is just a little guy, only 5, he won't be ready for anything serious for a long time, but it would be good for me to start learning a a bit, especially how to fix them, that way when he gets a bit older I should hlbe in the know. I don't know of any local tracks, honestly I wasn't planning on going to a track, but its probably a lot of fun.

How young do you see kids at the organized races?

 

We had a few around 7, I don't remember any younger than that in races, but some younger than that would come to the track with Dad when it was open drive time and have a good time with father/son racing/bonding time. At your son's age, get a simple truck that can be repaired. Most of the RC cars and trucks sold at the big box stores are considered to be disposable. Traxxas, Associated, and Losi all sell every stock part, and many upgrade parts, for everything they sell. They also sponsor drivers, these are their ambassadors. I've seen sponsored drivers take the differential out of a youngsters car, take it apart and throw away half the parts, rebuild it out of their own parts stock (it's free to them) and teach the youngster how to maintain and tune the car. Find a track or some open space and enjoy. If there's a big race, go talk to the racer's. You'll learn a lot in a short time.

I'm going to check the local hobby shop's selection today.

 

I'm picking up a Slash for $60 in the next day or two. It only had one battery cycled through. I'll be looking for that Tundra body ;-)
The electric will be fun to mess with when I don't feel like tinkering with my nitro stuff.

 

Well that's $140 less than I spent on a Stampede for my little guy. Maybe u can find a used one so dad can play too
