I've owned ford's the past 28 year's always liked toyota though, so i bought one a month or so ago, is it normal for the engine to idle high for 5 min before dropping below 1000 rpm on cold start up

Hasn't happened to me on my 2016. Usually takes 30" to 1' in the AM.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Most engines idle high. Reason is so you can get the cats up to temperature faster..

Alot depends on outside temperature also. If cooler it runs higher and warmer not so high...

If you have a cold weather package on the truck it's designed in the ECM to run higher rpm on start up... my Tacoma and tundra both have cold weather packages and both run on high side before going to normal idle rpm.

It's normal for them to idle high but not for 5 mins. Might just have the cold weather package?
