Over the past couple of years I've done a number os mods to get my truck looking the way I want. I added a cold air intake, custom painted fender flairs, grille replacement, headlight replacement, leveling kit and 20" wheels.

After the first oil change and clean up after the pressure from 7qts of oil came blasting out all over my wheel I set out to make that process easier. First I replaced the oil drain plug with quick drain option.

After looking around I decided to install a Fumoto F103N Engine Oil Drain Valve. Easy enough, drain the oil, install and seal the new plug, refill and test. Works like a champ.

Next I set out to replace the skid plate that many of you may know has to be removed in order to replace the oil filter. Not sure what engineers were thinking when they designed that, but thats the way it is. Mine plate was damaged by the previous owner, so I set our looking for a replacement. From the dealer it was 343.00 with new bolts and clips which is a ridiculous amount. Checking around online I found several others that were cheaper, but none of them had the style that I wanted or the access panel to make it easy to pull the oil filter. In the end I bit the bullet and bought the OEM metal panel. I purchased a 5" bi-metal hole saw and set out to create an access panel. I tied a magnet to a piece of string and tacked it to the oil filter and installed the skid plate with the plan of finding the center. That worked like a champ, so the next step was to remove the skid plate and drill the hole. I marked the center and off-set it by 1 inch as I've learned in the past centering directly under the mark makes it a little awkward to get any leverage. I clamped a piece of wood to the underside of the skid plate, added a little lubricant to the cutting area and did a nice slow cut out in an effort to reduce the burrs. After drilling the hole I filed the edges to remove any sharp edges and burrs and they thoroughly cleaned the area and added 2 5" o-rings and some rubber sealant. The result turned out pretty good. Judge for yourself.

    Looks good. Nice work.

I'm late for your needs but maybe not for others. The RCI aluminum plate with built in filter access is $380. But if you already have a good OEM plate then this mod makes more sense.

Thanks guys. I agree the RCI one does have an access panel, I just didnt like the look. Mine would have been better if the hole had a cover, 5” is a big hole.

Isn’t the o ring going to peel right off first time you slide on it?

If you have the ability to weld you could replace the o-rings with some 1/4" rod. Weld it to the inside and then use a hammer to massage the little bit of sheet metal to curl it around the rod.

Sweet! Looks really good. I just ended up going with a RCI. I have a question on the Fumoto. How tight did you put it on? It doesn’t look like any torque wrench would work. Did you just go until it stopped turning?

Nice job! I'm going to do something like that to my skid plate. I'm probably going to do the same thing you did,but I'm going to put a plate over the hole and use some self tapping screws to secure it in place.

Fumotos come with a washer. What I would call the hard fiber type of washer. Spit it in till snug. Then put an adjustable wrench on it and spin around another 1/3 turn or so. No torque wrench required. Just a well calibrated wrist.

Love this community. Yes, the first time i hot that skid plate it will tear that gasket off. Fortunately I dont do that often.

The futomoto plug as someone mentioned only needs a about a 1/3 turn past snug.

A welded ring is an excellent idea. That may be the next mod.

I really liked that skid plate but I called RCI and the skid plate is for 4 wheel drive only. They said I could modify my truck to make it fit. I don't want to spend that much and still have to modify it or my truck to make it fit. I'll keep the OEM and modify it unless someone has another option.

Looks good and I really need to cut a hole in my skid plate.

After all this time, I finally decided to crawl under my truck and remove the skid plate to cut a hole in it. I found out that I don't even have this skid plate. I'm not even sure if it was there when I bought my 2012 in 2014. Oh well, guess I don't need it since never knew it was gone in the first place. :)
