I saw the good planning of pre-scrambled eggs in a plastic water bottle, and fell in love. I'll totally camp with you guys!
Hey, Daniel, I can't tell from your pics: do you do anything to secure all that equipment in the bed, other than lock the tailgate, and put little stuff in the middle, far from the edges and out of reach under the RTT? I haven't sprung for bars and an RTT yet because I haven't seen enough set-ups in person to understand how y'all don't get everything stolen?

I almost asked what that 'chairs' reference was, on the site maintenance thread. But I realized it would likely be revealed elsewhere and Look!, here it is. :)
Yep, that was a good plan. I'm eager to get my gear organized for RTT camping.

And just like this, we may have found the best guy to plan our next SoCal Tundras.com BS Team adventure!:fistbump:

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/wel...n-and-what-do-we-do-next-thread.19581/page-32

The guys/ families showing up for our SoCal meet ups so far, are mostly from the Riverside/ San Bernadino region. I'm thinking you're pretty much right in the SoCal Tundra hood!

    ... unless you mean Canada.

When we were snowboarding I did lock the tail gate and I also have a 20' cable I run through everything just incase someone does have the balls or lack of brains to try to take my stuff.

As for being a guy to try to plan the trips. I am too much of a noob for that but after June and my sons soccer ends I will have more time to help out to plan stuff.

Thanks! I would love hitting up those mountains you have out there.

Gonna go to Algonquin Park this year, when our kids are older, teach them to portage into solitude with a canoe and backpack like I used to do with my buddies.

It's quite a bit of protected land in Ontario. You can camp at a trailer site near the road or go deep into areas only accessible by canoe. Always breathtaking in the fall.

So for my setup, I have a custom bed rack that is cab height with ARB RTT and ARB awning with the full enclosed tent option. (6.5'x8.5')

I got an off road trailer now so I don't need to drive around everyday with all that gear on my truck since it's a Daily.

I got it rigged up so that i am able to slide the bed rack back onto my truck when I don't need the trailer, by myself and vise versa.

Here are a few pictures i was able to take from a recent trip..

One of my favorite things to do is motorcycle camping. I've done the Dalton Highway to Deadhorse, the Western Trans America Trail, Glacier NP, Idaho, etc. and many trips through the Nevada desert. It's very fun, however, I have a 3.5 y/o daughter now so leaving home for a two or three-week trip is much more difficult. My wife and child love camping, so we've been doing more truck camping lately, however we find organized campgrounds a drag and have been yearning for a more primitive experience.

I'd been looking into RTT's but frankly, I don't want to mount/demount it to the truck, run a rack, etc. I wanted something where I could keep all of our camping gear ready to go, fill the ice chest and head out for the weekend. I'd decided on an overland trailer with RTT and really wanted to build one, however, I travel for work pretty much weekly and it would take me forever to finish. Since I'd rather be camping than building a trailer, I decided to purchase one and searched for the last three months before I found a good deal on a lightly used Smittybilt Scout trailer complete with RTT, awning and many extras. The best part is the lady delivered it to me from Las Vegas to Reno where I'm working! Score!

Here it is. I've purchased everything to add an electrical system and I'll buy a water tank to pair with the water heater and water pump she gave me. An RTIC 110 is waiting for me at home. Over the winter I plan to build this into a badass camping machine and my daughter just loves the RTT because she thinks it's a tree house.

    fullsizeoutput_bd6.jpg

The morning after I brought it home, we set it up in front of the house to check everything and every one of my neighbors came by to check it out. It was like nothing they have ever seen before lol.

    fullsizeoutput_bd7.jpg

The only problem is it takes up a lot of space in the garage, but we'll work it out. The whole family is really excited go camping in this thing.

I have an A.R.E cx hd topper on order for my 18 crewmax. I got the hd bars on it and want to put a platform on it. The bars are in a fixed position, so I’m sure rhino or frontrunner platforms won’t line up. Has anyone had any experience with this setup? I could only find one on the Tacoma forum with it. Any input with fit suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you tell more about that trailer: manufacturer, model; do those diagonal supports that "x" at the side, extend to support the trailer so you can unhook it from the truck?

It’s a trailer made by TW Overland out of Calgary, Alberta. If you check out the website, twoverland.com, it is the one in the promotional video being pulled by the white Jeep.

Wasn't anything crazy this go around, but we took advantage of our recent long weekend and hit a couple spots in Ontario.
Cape Croker Lighthouse and Devils Monument.

Hi all -- I'm planning a decent little road trip this summer as part of our move and hoping to get some thoughts/feedback. I have a 2017 CrewMax TRD Off-Road (recent pic attached to this post). The plan is to drive from here in Anchorage, Alaska, to San Antonio, Texas, going along the Alcan Highway through Canada. I drove from Pennsylvania to Anchorage in the summer of 2016 in our Subaru Outback. The car was brand new and, after the 5,000 trip, had to get all new tires (LONG story... suffice it to say Subaru claimed we "drove too far in too short of time"). All this to say I'm somewhat familiar with the route and some of the necessary planning (e.g., Milepost). My wife and two kids will be flying to San Antonio. It will be me and my dad in the truck, with the two dogs in the bed. Here's where I'd like to get your thoughts:

The plan is to have a bed rack with rooftop tent (RTT) and stop as wanted/needed along the way. I recently installed the bed rack (Leitner) with two gear pods, two mounts, RTT mounts, and an extra support beam across the middle. My plan is to go with a 23zero Byron RTT, which should allow plenty of space for the family in the future. On the two side gear mounts, I'm thinking of getting 4 3-gallon gas tanks and using the Rotopax extenders so I can sandwich two together on the inside of the mount (into the bed area) and two on the outside of the mount. That will give me 12 extra gallons. Do you think this will be enough "cushion" with the gas? I believe my tank is 38-gallons though the fuel gauge starts to show empty several gallons earlier. I only drive short distances in town here in Anchorage (purchased new and have 7,000 miles on it), and am in 4WD for the majority of the year here, so my average MPG has been around 12. I'm thinking that will improve greatly on the highway, but I will have the added resistance of the RTT sticking up above the cab and some extra weight, so I'm not sure what sort of fuel efficiency I'll be getting for the drive. I'd like to have at least 500-miles to a tank (including the Rotopax containers, if need be). After filling up, my truck never predicts that I will get 500 miles to the tank (usually something like 478). I used the "500 mile" metric driving up here and it was sufficient. If the sandwiching of 4 3-gallon fuel containers works, I could use the second gear mount to double up, providing 24 gallons of extra fuel. Even with my current miles per gallon, that would be a nice 288 mile cushion.

The two dogs will be in the bed of the truck. I am considering going to a local tent/tarp company and look into having a custom soft top cover made around the rack to help protect the dogs from any potential rain, etc. The dogs (leonberger) are too large and too old to ride in the back seat. I'll make sure they're comfortable in the bed area.

I've been considering adding a lift, upgrading suspension, and putting bigger wheels on my truck. However, with this trip coming up, would it be best to hold off? This truck is my daily driver and will be getting driven significantly more in San Antonio as I commute for work. Also, I don't ever intend to do crazy offroading with it, but I'd like to have the ability to drive it to some off-the-beaten path spots for camping in the future. At the same time, I'd like to have as much smooth, quiet driving as possible for this 4,100 mile trip. Just with the bed rack, there is a noticeable increase in cab noise, so I'm assuming all the other gear will add to that. And having burned through a set of tires getting up here on the Subaru, I'm very hesitant to pick up new tires that might lose a lot of life from this single trip. I have considered having one of the local stereo installers wrap my cab with soundproofing material. They said a 3 dB decrease is typical. Still on the fence if that's worth it (takes 2 days, something like $2500).

    The condensed version of questions:
    1) What sort of MPG do you think a full tank will give me? How much spare gas should I carry? Am I correct to assume I have a 38-gallon tank that seems to indicate empty closer to 32-gallons?
    2) Any special considerations given the RTT setup?
    3) Should a lift/suspension upgrade not be considered until after the trip?
    4) Should bigger wheels not be considered until after the trip?
    5) Thoughts on soundproofing the cab
    6) Anything else I forgot?

One other consideration is that all of these things are much cheaper in the Lower 48, so if there isn't a sufficient functionality gain with respect to this big trip, it's even harder to justify doing up here.
