Reusing stock tpms on new wheels? Tpms on spare as well?

I know they have to be programmed to your truck, but I thought there was a limit to the qty that the truck could register.

 

Great question. I want to run any 4 I want with 1 behind without lights on dash and without reprogram. Is this possible?

 

Why wouldnt you carry your spare? Always good to keep it with you at all times. Never know what can happen. It will save you the headache.

 

I will almost always have it. But it's not going to fit under the truck. When I need use of my full bedslide I want to be able to leave it home. I have AAA for those occasions. It's not an always thing, more of a once in while wont want it on me.

 

dcsleeper408, yes my 2013 had 8 TPMS at in the system entered by my tire guys (Les Schwab). I change over my tires each Winter, and Summer. Never had any lights ever. The system reads only 4 at a time. In the 2018 I have a different system all 4 tires are read and are specified as to the pressure in each location, eg Left front. So if you rotate them it's new to me how it's going to be accurate unless you get the tire shop to re-link the locations. I never had an issue like that with my 2013 as it did not tell the exazt location of each sensor. My tire guys do free flats, free rotations, free everything. Never had my 2013 back to the dealer for anything.

 

What size are you going with now? 35” and under tire should fit under with a little modification.

 

Yes but a huge 35. I got 35x12.5r17 pitbull rockers going on. I'm not so sure it will fit under. I was thinking of keeping on my bedslide under my db cover, unless those times I need to pack the bed full. Then I wanted to just pull it out n leave in garage. But I don't want it causing a light.

 

What's crazy to me, when I worked for Toyota years ago, I heard a couple stories about the spare losing enough air to trigger the tpms light. Don't know if true, but remember hearing it after them struggling to figure out why it was on with all the other 4 tires being inflated to correct pressure.
So now my heads spinning. Maybe I need to ask a tech. Even that is hard to have 100 confidence in nowadays.

 

In that case, you would have to get tpms in all 5 wheels. If all 5 can be programmed in, you’re good. If not, then you will have to get them programmed each time you rotate your tires. The reason I think only 4 can be programmed at a time is because my tire shop tried to program my 5th wheel and they couldn’t. They tried for 30 minutes and said my truck will only accept 4 at a time. But it seems @Joe Dirt was able to so who knows?

You know its funny what did we do 25 years ago when we had no sensors? lol I read a post here about how to disable the TPMS dash light this am. You should always have a spare! driving 50 miles with different size tires is not going to ruin anything. If you are in Bun#ucked egypt and you have no cell signal how's Triple A going to help? Think about it, most cars have a Donut tire and state right on them "for 50 miles or less" be safe out there . One more thin, some sensors don't physically work in other rims. Do your homework, my 18 " rim steel sensors worked in a machined aluminum 18" wheels but only by luck.

Hey Don tnx for info so far. Yeah it's not about the tpms not being able to read the 5th for me. I'd be perfectly fine if I could only do 4 and just monitor the 5th. Long as no matter which wheel is where, on or off, it didn't throw a light on dash. Maybe it's my OCD but lights on dash drive me crazy. I hear u about always having a spare. I meant it more as if I needed the bed space and had it there with a tpms and wanted to leave it home without I light I'd like to be able. I even thought about leaving a 295 or even factory spare under if I couldn't fit the 35s there. Ideally, I'd love to rotate 5 in and keep the 5th under just like factory. But I'm not sure it would fit which means it would be on my bedslide usually. But those times I need the space I would take it out and either take the chance, I know I'm an idiot, or just keep the factory spare under for those 50 miles or less time.

That's why I was asking if the Toyota tpms would work in method. Wasn't sure and wanted to know 1st hand from others. I know my 16 pro isn't all that technologically advanced so I'm hoping it's more like your 13. I'd love to have 5 sensors and have it not need reprogram on rotation, nor matter its placement. This headache is ed ven making me rethink to just run 4 and keep 5th as designated spare, or even scrap the idea of using sensors. I'm probably more confused than I even started by now.

I'll try to remember to update tomorrow if I find out anything from an experienced Toyota tech when I ask tomorrow.

 

Even though my head is spinning with all the conflicting info, I still appreciate everyone's contribution in relaying their own experience. Guess with conflicting experiences and ideas I got more homework to do before I hit buy on my PayPal whether I get 4 or 5 rims to match the 5 tires I already got.

Get the 5th rim. You wont regret it.

 

Yeah I think that's what I'm about to finalize.

 

I pulled the trigger on 5, will be here shortly. Now it's time to decide to move the sensors over or just go without them in the new wheels.

 

Maybe someone can help me, I am going to be using some 2017 4runner 17" rims I found online for 100$ on my 2000 Tundra.
Problem is it has no valve stems and my truck does not have TPMS so what kind of stems should I use.
