Coolant Leak - Water Pump?

So when doing my mods this weekend I slid up underneath my truck and noticed bright pink fluid hanging from the cross frame directly below the serpentine belt. I can’t tell where it’s coming from, I just see the drops at the bottom. Coolant level is before the “low” mark now.

I’ve read that Tundra water pump seals aren’t the greatest, is this true?

I may do a pressure test on the system to see if I can spring the leak, looking for anyone else that’s had this kind of issue, and also repair time for a water pump if you’ve done it

Yep. Unfortunately it's somewhat common. For every one that fails with low mileage,, 5-10 go 100k plus. Toyota "accepts" a weep hole drip or two, but if it's coating your floor or suspension it needs to be addressed. Some swear by alternative pumps and have success, others stay stock.
Good time to check hoses and belts. I'd recommend you stay with Toyota coolant, but some have had success with Amsoil. I'd just shrug it off as "one of those things" and repair it as soon as practical. I'm at 30k on a 16 and I watch it and towers. Both dry for now. None will strand you, but Toyotas seldom do that.

 

Yep that area is likely the water pump, dealership will charge $1000 for this job, or you can buy an Aisin one on Amazon and put it in yourself, took me a few hours.

 

Yeah, I plan on replacing it myself. Mines a 2007 with 103,000 so I guess it got good life out of it. Good to hear it was only a couple of hours.

On that water pump, was the gasket a cheap paper one or higher quality than OEM?

 

That should be OEM, the gasket was high quality, not a bad job, just take your time and remember to remove all the hoses carefully, they tend to rip/crack if you force it.

 

Here's a trick. If you have a jack and jack stands (I have a 2 post lift) remove the wheels so you can lower the truck. It makes it much easier to reach the pump unless you are tall. If you're doing the pump look into doing the thermostat as well. You are right there and the extra cost really isn't that great.

Usually Aisin is OEM for Toyota water pumps. Can anyone confirm? It's only $68 on Rockauto for the Aisin WPT804.

I believe that is what I used when I replaced mine.

 

I found this when I did my timing belt right after buying my truck with 134K miles. I went with an Aisin kit for mine.
