I too am a hobbits or at least trying to be. I have been dabbling for a few years and just never really taken it seriously, but my intent is to do so. With @smslavin putting together the internet class that he has, I kind of just wanted to know what was a good starting point. You both have given me a good place to start. Thanks. I could only afford a double cab so don't have the room for a big bag to thrown in the back, I have to shoe horn a small bag that is why I only want to invest in 3 lenses at this point.

If I absolutely had to have one that would be an everyday, do everything lens, it'd be a 24-70/2.8. From there, I'd go into primes. A 50/1.4 can be found used (Canon or Nikon) for a very reasonable price. You'd be amazed at how useful that lens is. If you want longer reach, the 70-200 is the next most useful lens. f/4 versions will be significantly less expensive than the 2.8 ones.

Just remember, all bodies, from entry to pro level, are nothing more than light proof boxes. Image quality is dictated by what you put on the front of them.

For those of you that shoot a lot of photos on your iPhones, you're going to want to bookmark this site.

    http://heictojpg.com/

iOS 11 will no longer produce jpeg images which is going to be all kinds of fun when you want to shoot something and share it here or someplace else. The website above will convert the heic files to jpeg then give you a link to download the conversion.

Last night, @aramirez73 asked if I had any surf photos of Teahupoo or Mavericks. Unfortunately, those are two spots that are still on my list of places to photograph.

Teahupoo is worth looking up. It is a mutant and I have been fascinated with the hydro dynamics of it for years. Because of the way the reef is shaped, on sizable swells it actually breaks below sea level.

It is nature at its finest. Terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

Mavericks is another big wave spot in Northern CA. About a mile out from Half Moon Bay. It can be just as terrifying but for different reasons. It's cold. Dark. Sharky.

I once had an offer to jump on a boat and photograph a 60'+ swell at Cortez Banks, which is a several hour boat ride out of San Diego, but I couldn't pull it together. It is a sea mount that comes to within 90' or so of the surface. On the right swell, it produces a monster. Well, it's calm, the fishing and diving are really amazing. Big time yellow fin spot but the big man in the grey suit is also a resident.

Anyway, I dug up some old stuff from Hawaii. This is a spot called Keiki. It is right next to Shark's Cove on the North Shore of Oahu. A 15 min walk down the beach puts you at Ehukai Park which is Pipeline. The wave can get massive and breaks in very shallow water.

This one is from Newport Beach, CA. That's Catalina out on the horizon. It made Surfer Magazine's Photo Annual in either '04 or '05.

all you need to do is play. low power flash lights work better than something like a surefire or a fenix. although, i make my fenix lights work since they are always in the truck.
