i may be too late, but on my gen one we did the frame recall as well. we were able to get the dealer to replace any parts that they would have removed to do the frame for just the cost of the parts. was pretty helpful for some of the regular wear and tear. my dad drives it now as well as a 16 1794 edition i just helped him find. truck now has 360k on it and still running strong.

New tires is the first priority.

After that, a bit of a shakedown to see what else needs replacing. I know for sure I need an airbag clockspring, and possibly a TPS.

    Update:

I got the truck home last Saturday, but found that the 4x4 wasn't working, and the Check engine light came on. I'm bringing it back to the dealership tonight to see if they'll diagnose the issues, and potentially fix them if it doesn't cost me. We'll see what they do.

Also, Found out the axles they put on my truck were aftermarket ones, so they refunded me $100.

Also Also, Upper ball joints are definitely shot as well. I replaced the lowers before I brought it in to get the frame done, but the uppers need to be pressed in, so that's a bit more difficult. Shops book time is crazy long, and would cost me $550-650 for labor alone, so I'll be figuring out how to do it myself.

Well it looks like the 4x4 issue is my stupid fault, I put the actuator in wrong. oops.
Check engine light was Accelerator position sensor and two different O2 sensors, so thats an ouch.

Looks like I have my work cut out for me. :/

Been a busy couple weeks. Got the acceleration pedal position (APPS) sensor installed today. seems to have solved that. 02 Sensors are sitting in my entry way waiting to be installed.

I also ordered a set of these to go on sometime soon.

    Left on the agenda:
    1. Steering wheel clockspring: I bought an aftermarket one on eBay for $17. we'll see if it works or not.
    2. Upper Ball Joints: I have 'em, just need to find the time to replace them.
    3. 02 sensors to install.
    4. reinstall the ADD actuator.
    5. oil change

I'm planning on taking it on a road trip to go four-wheeling down to Arizona over spring break (March 4), so that's the deadline as of right now. It's going to be a busy month!

    Update!

the alternator died right before I was going to bring my truck in to get the tires mounted. finally got the alternator in the mail last night, and installed it today, as well as reinstalled the ADD actuator the right way.

over the weekend I got the upper ball joints installed.

Pretty much all that's left to do is to:
    1. get my tires mounted. That's happening tomorrow.
    2. Install the airbag clock spring.
    3. oil change
    4. PCV Valve
    5. Rear Diff fluid change
    6. ??

Nice. How bad was the alternator to install? Looks kinda tough to reach.

Have you already done the front diff and T Case fluid?

Alternator is quite the pain. Not only is it a tight squeeze to get it in there, but the power steering pulley is in the way also, so you have to loosen that to get the alternator in and out.

I haven’t done transfer case fluid, but front diff fluid I did last night with the add actuator.

So far, pretty happy with the new rubber. they ride smooth and firm, and look a lot better than the crappy michelins that were on there before. I do wish they looked a bit more aggressive though. :notsure:

I'm happy with the 265/75/16 size over stock too.

    Turdna Update:

She went in for an alignment yesterday. a big thumbs up. I also replaced the clock spring yesterday, so I don't have an airbag light, and have working cruise control!

I also found something horrible last week during my oil change.

I have a cracked leaf spring. that sucks. It's just a single leaf on the drivers side, so it's not a big deal until I tow/haul something. I'm going to drive it for a period of time to continue shaking the truck down in case something else goes out too. I've only put about 600 miles on it since I bought it 6 months ago.

I also discovered that it has a leaking rear axle seal. and a power steering leak. and the transfer case actuator I installed for the second time leaks. GAH!!!!

oh, and I tried to adjust my rear brake LSPV and the adjustment bracket broke. I have one on order.

So that being said, here's the updated To Do list:

    0. LSPV "Shackle"
    1. PCV Valve
    2. Transfer Case fluid
    3. Rear axle seal and Diff breather mod
    4. rear end fluid
    5. Leaf springs
    6. shudder when decelerating under 25MPH. my guess is drive shaft-related. Grease everything, see if it helps.
    7. rewire one of the Offroad lights. it's shorting out.
    8. replace cab visor bulbs and clean contacts
    9. replace some interior bulbs. (behind HVAC controls)
    10. ??

did spark plugs last night. the old ones were in rough shape. and cheap autolite plugs. I replaced them with NGK V-power coppers.

Also, I blew the front brake line between the flexible rubber and the caliper. sucker is so stripped and rusted on there. GAH!

If you are looking for OE fitment springs and on a budget, sdsprings has some good prices. You can get a set for about $300. You’ll need to buy the bushings from Toyota which are only a few dollars.

I’m considering these as I do not want a lift and they are OE fitment. A OEM Toy set runs $1500 for the pair.

yeah $1500 is a big ouch. I might look at something to get rid of my 2" blocks while I'm at it. we'll see. anyone have any recommendations.

That's a great deal on a good tire...I had those on an old Montero. If they were LT instead of P I would be all over that.

Changed the pcv valve, topped off the rear diff, and greased the u-joints today.

When I was down there I found the cause of my driveline rumble. The carrier bearing is bad. It’s sagging and has a bunch of play in it. So glad it’s not u joints.

Ordered a carrier breaking, it should be here Thursday. I finally got around to repacking my O2 sensors tonight. They came off suprisingly easy. Pretty happy about that. Hopefully my mileage improves...

Looking at new leaf spring setups for the rear to replaced the 2" blocks and cracked spring.

    my current thoughts are:

Atlas custom 2" lift leaf packs: $680 + shipping see here or
Stock height springs with an AAL: $250 for springs, + AAL cost and shipping

I'm seeing wheelers progressive AALs for about $160 , Toytec linear for $100ish link, and el cheapo eBay ones for about $50 link.

AAL recommendations? do progressive AALs ride much better than linear ones? they seem to cost quite bit more.

I've heard good things about the Wheeler's progressive AAL's, however I have no first hand experience. When I do install my life I will go with the Wheelers.

haven't updated the thread much recently, been spending a lot of time over in the "what have you done today" thread.

Replaced the Drive shaft center support, didn't change anything in regards to the shuddering. gonna leave it be for now. U-joints are all in good shape.

also, went mudding! I'm pretty impressed with how the Kumhos did.

    Long time no see!

been driving the truck quite a bit. I've decided to keep the truck, and I spent a few hours last Sunday grinding the rust off the top of the roof. I got everything off not including the windshield area. I'll be tackling that sometime soon.

In the meantime, She needs new brakes, the rears are shuddering something awful, and I've decided I'm just going to redo the fronts at the same time. Going to go with the 13WL calipers while I'm down there.
