Hi tundra friends.first post on here.I have a 2004 tundra limited 4x4 w 190k miles.the body is in near flawless condition but the frame has severe rust issues.the frame was "sprayed"in feb of 2014 by Toyota of keene, new hampshire.I bought the truck in June of 2015.I had the truck inspected by my mechanic and all looked ok.I bought a new exhaust in Jan of 2017 at minicheke of brick,n.j and the mechanic pointed out severe rot.I contact 2 Toyota dealerships to inspect the truck and they said that it was unsafe to drive.Toyota policy was that since the frame was "sprayed"then that was their way of saying that the recall was resolved.can anyone give me info on what to do or who to contact?I can't even get a body shop to fix it due to liability concerns

A little of this and a little of that.
I'd take it back to the place of purchase and start a case of some kind. If that didn't work I'd call someone in the state of New Hampshire to file some kind of claim. Since they sprayed the underside of the truck they obviously knew it had rust issues. It may be hard to prove but if you could prove they knew about the trust then you might be able to get them to take it back.

Thanks for all the info and welcomes to this forum.I've owned over 5 Toyota trucks and I can't believe Toyota wouldn't stand behind their product.there must be 1000's of tundra's and Tacoma's on the road that are putting so many people's lives in danger.maybe when someone dies then maybe Toyota or the NHTSA will step in and make Toyota fix this serious problem.

My 03 Sequoia had rust forming underneath. It was like that from within the first three years of ownership. Like your Tundra, my Sequoia was Immaculate on the exterior and interior, but rust forming on many major components, frame, etc. I sold it last summer to get the Tundra. Sorry to hear about this with your Tundra.

If anyone has a problem with their rusting frames then they should contact Toyota and shove it down their throats to make them make these changes ,and or contact the NHTSA and explain your problem with them and hopefully enough people will contact both Toyota and NHTSA to force Toyota to replace our frames. Toyota has already spent 4.3 billion dollars and replaced 1.5 million truck frames so to the homework and hopefully we can all combine our efforts to resolve this safety and financial issue. And if you are on the same boat as I am and want to try to contact an attorney for a class action lawsuit then please let me know.

How the F**K could they "spray" that??? Had to have been like that already. That kind of rust damage doesn't occur that fast.

Hello to all the Toyota Tundra Enthusiasts out there.I wanted to give everyone an update that I just contacted the National Highway and Traffic and Safety Administration(NHTSA). I filed a complaint about my 2004 Toyota Tundra rotted frame. The NHTSA has over 350 complaints about rotting tundra frames. If enough people file a complaint about rotting Toyota tundra frames then they will have no option but to contact Toyota and make Toyota extend the recall and make Toyota replace all the Tundra's out there that have frame damage. So,if you are having problems with your Tundra frame and Toyota doesnt want to fix it then please do not be shy to call NHTSA and file a complaint. It's very easy to do.Hopefully the NHTSA will make Toyota do the right thing.please spread the word before someone gets seriously hurt or even killed!

I also have a remedy for the notorious rattling on the tundra Dash boards. Cut a piece of foam pipe insulation split in half, shove the insulation between the dash and the windshield and push it down as far as it will go. That should take care of the rattling. It works for me....

I'm also trying to figure out why my speakers vibrate in my doors .I've heard that it is notorious with the tundra. does anyone have a remedy for that?

And I was told, by Toyota, that if I had the frame sprayed and it still rusted, I would be eligible for a frame replacement. But since I never received the notice they say they can't do anything for me.

I would find Toyota corporate emails and bombard them with emails and shove it down their throats like I did...
    Rob.carter@toyota.com
    Andrew.gill@toyota.com
    Bill.fay@toyota.com
    Mike. Groff@toyota.com
    Robert.ch?@toyota.com
    Thorn ?
There are more corporate emails .I would send an email everyday(with pictures) until they responded with the answer you're looking for! Shove it down the corporate Nazis throats. Their Corrupt Practices are screwing Toyota Tundra and Tacoma owners and putting 1000's of people's lives in danger.also contact the National traffic and highway safety administration.NTSHA told me that if there is enough complaints that they will make Toyota make the repairs. they have over 350 complaints about rtoting frames. I sent them pictures and info about my truck and I'm waiting for them to get back to me. My truck was sprayed in February 2014 with 147000 miles on it. I first noticed the rotting frame issue in January of 2018 when my truck had less than 175,000 miles on it. So within less than 30000 miles my frame has severe frame fto issues. Now do you think that is coincidence or just Toyota covering up a pre-existing condition?

    Hi All,

I am a Tundra fan and have had Gen1s, Gen2s and Tacomas. Gen1s are my favorite and I have 2 of them (2001 4x4 Acc Cab and 2004 4x4 Ltd DC) and a Tacoma (2008) right now. The subject of this post is 2004 Ltdd 4x4 Double Cab I bought last fall. 4x4 Limited DC with only69K miles. I bought it off of eBay. Quite a find...or so I thought.

The selling independent dealer sent me lots of pics but until today when I was installing a backup camera I thought I just had "surface rust". At least that is what the dealer called it in the pictures I asked for. The truck was from Maryland so I expected to see a little bit of rust but nothing like I discovered today. As I was looking around to route wires when paint and rust debris kept falling in my face. I started to tap on the frame with a screw driver and to my horror I probably knocked 5lbs of rust off the frame. There were big pieces of loose rusty metal inside the driver side frame rail where it is enclosed next to where the rear cross member is. My rust is not as bad as that in Rottedframe2004's pictures but it is bad. After seeing the rust I went to the Toyota owners site and I can see that it was "treated" per the recall in 2015.

D0D - FRAME (CRC) ~|~CUSTOMER REQUESTS D0D LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN INSPECT FRAME FOR RUST PERFORATION ~|~ ~|~INSPECTED FRAME AND REMOVED BED FOR RUST CLEANING NO RUST PERFORATION FOUND AND APPLIED CRC (CORROSION- RESISTANT COMPOUND) 3628C2 8.2

Whatever they did not work as I have black coating flaking off everywhere, rust everywhere. I showed a piece of the rust to my wife and first thing she ask was with that kind of corrosion is it even safe to drive.

So I have been reading a lot today and I can see that a bunch of truck owners have the same problem without resolution. I am so disappointed with this situation because I had enough issues in my life and don't need one more to deal with. Never-the-less, this should not be happening and I am ready to do my part to get a resolution. I've read on other forums (Tundra Solutions) that Toyota was replacing frames on these Trucks up until 2012. I also read that they were extending frame warranty to 15 years. I have no idea if this is true but I read one post on Tundra Solutions where one guy got his frame replaced this year as part of his prepurchase.

I am hoping that since Toyota acknowledged there was a problem that they will take another look at it and agree that their attempt to resolve the problem failed and will offer another alternative.

My hopes are not high, but I am going to reserve judgement until I talk to my dealer (Fred Haas) here in Houston and see what they say/do. I will share notes here and start following the same path as RottedFrame2004 if I don't get satisfactory resolution. See pics below.

Thanks for the response from Houston Texas about the 2004 Tundra that you bought from Maryland. I wanted to give you an update that Toyota corporate has contacted a lawyer and sent me letters to cease and assist with my concerning emails. I just want to let you know that no lawyers going to scare me off and I'm going to bombard them with more emails and pictures about their crooked practices .hopefully we can all make our voices heard and make them do the right thing! I was the best Toyota advocate in the world because I truly believed in Toyota and their product but after this Fiasco I will let it be known what Toyota has done to me and hundreds if not thousands of other loyal Toyota customers. If everyone who has this problem contacts NTHSA things will get accomplished ,I promise you that! I was told by a good source at the administration that if there are enough complaints that they will make toyota change their policy and extend the recall. I have voice recorded conversations from Toyota customer service that said it was 12 years for frame replacement, I have other voice recorded conversations that say the frame was for 15 years,(which I was eligible for) and I have other voice recorded conversations where Toyota customer care and Toyota customer service said it was on a case-by-case basis.

    RottenFrame2004,

What is the basis for the cease and desist letter? What is their position on the rotten frame? I guess I’ll be getting one too before long since I will be pursuing every avenue to get this corrected. It might make since to trade notes after I have significant correspondence. I opened a claim today on the Toyota Owners site. I will also go buy the dealer when I get a chance this week. Let’s see what happens

Toyota said that since they "sprayed" my truck in 2014 when my truck had 147k miles, that rectified the recall.I contacted Toyota in Jan 2018 when my truck had less than 170k miles.less than 30k later I found the rot. If that is not covering up and concealing a pre-existing condition then I don't know what is. I would download an app that records all your phone conversations.call Toyota customer service and customer care and call the dealership where the truck was" sprayed". ask many questions.ask about why truck isn't recalled and why Toyota is still replacin older trucks like 2000 tundras. Like I said before, I have Auto recordings of Toyota telling me that frames were placed on a case-by-case basis and not 12 or 15 years .send Toyota corporate pictures and emails. tell them you were not taking no for an answer. and then contact the National traffic highway safety administration and send all your pictures and information to them.

There's a lot of incorrect information on this.

04-06 trucks never had a recall. It was a limited service campaign. The terms were the CRC coating if the frame had no perforations or a new frame if perforations were found larger than 10mm. Eligibility was 12 years from the original purchase date. Once the coating or frame was done the campaign was satisfied, it was a one time either or affair.

The 00-03 trucks had a recall for the rear crossmember only BUT if there wasn't enough structure left to attach a new crossmember the entire frame is replaced.

That is why there are still older trucks receiving new frames because a recall has no time limit.

It sucks but that's what it is. The early 2nd gen trucks are in the same boat, service campaign but no recall.

We have a first gen. Sequoia that Toyota inspected last year or so ago and said was fine. It was not part of the recall however. Shortly after they sent a letter stating they would clean and rustproof the frame anyway. They did so and it has been great.
My point, and please don't take this wrong, is that the truck (yours) is 15 years old. At what point do you think Toyota is responsible for rust? You live in the rust belt and the factory warranty expired years ago. If I buy a 1996 Ford F150 with rusted out fender wells, I would not expect Ford to fix this. Metal rusts eventually. I think Toyota did an EXCELLENT job on their recall and went above and beyond what they had to do.

If Toyota had rotted frames issues on previous models like 2000 to 2003 and later models like the 2007 and 2008 and why not 2004 to 2006? That sounds criminal to me. Toyota used to use Dana Corp frames but figured they would save a couple hundred bucks for each truck and use inferior frames from China. They are replacing rotted Chinese frames with Dana Corp frames now. Trying to save a couple hundred dollars for each truck costs Toyota over 4.3 billion dollars for this problem and had to inspect 1.5 million trucks. Toyota's model is Let's Go Places how the hell can you go anywhere with a rotted frame. And if any Yahoo out there is trying to defend Toyota with their cost cutting practices, then THEY are the issue as well !
